MasukI had no idea how much time had passed. There were no windows to tell me if night had come. Nobody came into the dungeon.
It must have been days because the lack of food had gotten to me and my body had weakened. The door opened suddenly, and I looked up. It was the first time anybody had bothered to come here since Elowen visited "Rebeccah" I am startled by Paula's voice and I rushed to the bars. "Paula" I sobbed as we held each other through the bars. "Paula," I cried harder, my body racked with regret. "It is okay". She whispered, gently running her fingers through my hair as much as the bars would allow. I tried to believe her words but I knew it wasn't okay. She must have heard the news she knew my fate. I brushed my finger over her cheeks, there was a fading bruise and her swollen forehead that was covered with a light cloth. I saw specks of blood and my heart broke further. "They hurt you." She shook her head. "I am fine. Really. You should worry about yourself. They are taking you away" I whimpered "I am sorry, I wish I could do something." Her voice broke, and the first tear slipped through. She looked over her shoulder. "Here. This was a gift from an old friend." She slipped a key between my fingers. "It can only be used once. To open any lock in the world. It will be difficult to escape here and even more difficult in the Misty Falls. You must try to make your escape before you get there." I nodded as I held the key in my hands, "I wish I could do more." She said again, wiping her face. "You have done more than enough for me. You cared for me after my Mother's death like I was your own, you put your life on hold just to be with me." "You are my daughter Rebeccah." She whispered "Hurry up" a voice from outside spoke. "I have to go, but please do not worry about me. And promise me that when you escape you won't come back for me, " "Paula" I shouted "Promise me, Rebeccah, that you will live your life. Start fresh and don't think about me." "How can I do that? How can you ask that from me?" "I do not have much time. And even if you find me alive, I will be too weak to leave with you. You would only get caught." "I can't." I shook my head "You must promise me" she said firmly "Your time is up" a burly guard barged in, taking Paula by her arm. "Take it easy." I snapped at him and he snarled at me in return "Do not fucking tell what to do." he yanked Paula away while I banged on the bars in fury, "Do as I have told you." Paula's voice rang loudly as she was taken away. I fell on my knees as I sobbed thinking that this would probably be the last time I would set my eyes on Paula, hear her voice. "Oh goddess" I cried in the silent dungeon, "Come to my aid," I whispered that to myself I remained in the same spot up until they came for me again. The key Paula had given to me was securely kept between my breasts, guarded firmly by my clothes. Caleb led the guards this time. "Take her out," he ordered and I was grabbed on both hands and taken outside. It was dark outside and there were barely enough lights to see what was happening around me. I was led into a large wagon with no windows only little bars. I was forced to crouch like an animal in the small space. The back door was shut and the lock was secured in place. Caleb's face filled the small bars. He has a look of disdain as he eyes me up and down. "It's a pity I didn't get to have a taste of you" he said in a creepy voice but I ignored him. "Do you not have anything to say?" I don't but I spit at him He wiped his face and his eyes were full of rage. "Open the fucking door," he yelled "There will be no time to secure her again if we do" Another answered. "I do not care. She disrespected me." "She is going to the Misty Falls. She will get what is coming to her" that appeased Caleb whose frown changed to a smile "He is going to tear you apart." He taunted and I looked away. They were wrong. I would never get to the Misty Falls. "It is time" someone announced, and the wagon lurched forward, and there was a foul smell, released into the wagon. "No!" I yelled as I recognized the smell. I tried to fight it, but it was impossible. It was already pulling me under. Caleb's gloating face was the last thing I saw before I passed out. My head throbbed as I opened my eyes. It took a moment for me to realize where I was. To my horror, the wagon was no longer moving, and even still there were other girls. I forced my weakened body into a sitting position. I looked around at the other girls who looked frightened. There was no way they picked other girls along the way. The wagon was too small and this place was too big. "Where are we?" I asked "Misty falls" Someone answered Oh my. The wolf's bane knocked me out and I failed to escape before getting to Misty Falls. But that didn't dampen my resolve. I had to escape. I crawled to the smaller door and peered outside. There were no guards. "Don't bother" the girl close to the door said "We are probably in the middle of the forest surrounded by guards." That was good for me. I tried the lock "You can't escape save your energy." "I can and I am going to" I said, full of determination. "Have you not heard of the beast of Misty Falls? It is a full moon tonight." I had no idea what she meant. The only dangerous person was the man I had been given as a gift. I retrieved the key and tried the lock. It opened and the key vanished into the air. "Are you coming?" "It is stupid. " she turned away. I didn't wait for a moment I jumped down and ran. The light of the full moon, guided me through the forest my feet pounding the earth, and at the center of it. I heard a thunderous roar.I stood outside Leonidas' office for a long time. My fingers hovered over the knob for a long time but I didn't go with the temptation to open it. I was a ball of nerves. Suddenly, the door cracked open and I took a step back. Leonidas stared at me, a long look on his face. "How long were you planning on standing outside" he said softly. "I thought you were busy. I didn't want to interrupt" I lied swiftly but Leonidas still caught onto it. "What's the matter with you?" "Nothing. I..." "Come inside" he took my hand and pulled me in. "Tell me. What's wrong?" He asked in a soft voice as he sat on the chair, pulling me into his legs and wrapping his arms around me with that comforting warmth that made me forget everything. I leaned into his touch and my worries seemed to disappear. “I..” I paused and sucked in a breath. I didn’t know how to break the news to him. Everything had been going well between us for the last month. Some issues had not been formally resolved but w
I couldn’t believe my ears. It didn’t sound like I was hearing right. “He did what?” Cara sighed loudly. “He felt guilty and..” my heart clenched as I remembered that I’d lashed out at him about everything. Guilt ate me up. “I’ll speak to him” Leonidas said before I could get any word out. I nodded and stood up. “I’ll be back with Zeus” I mumbled and he nodded, staring at me with a longing I couldn’t quite explain. I walked to Zeus's office and found Fenrir standing inside. “What are you doing here Becca?” “I came to get Zeus for Leonidas. But you don’t have to go immediately. He’s having a private conversation with Christopher” Both men nodded and Zeus looked away but Fenrir continued to stare. “Are you okay? You look pale” “I’m fine” I forced out and turned away. My legs ached as I stood out in the hallway, too many things were happening all at once. While I was relieved that Leonidas was alive, Christopher’s sacrifice weighed down on me. I shouldn’t have said tho
KING LEONIDAS POVThe first thing I noticed was the guard holding onto Rebeccah. The scared look on her face.“Get your fucking hands off her” I growled and he jumped back, staring at me like he’d seen a ghost. My head suddenly felt heavy and my vision swayed. My fingers waved in the air as I tried to regain my composure.“Leo..” Rebeccah rushed over to me, her dainty fingers brushing my arms gently. Tingles shot up my arms from where her fingers touched me.“Are you okay?” She asked in panic, touching my face.“I’m fine. I…”“You’re supposed to be dead” Finn’s voice came from across the room and I finally looked over at him.“What the fuck are you doing?”His gaze shifted and his lips parted.“What I should have done a long time ago. Taking what belongs to me”His attempt to keep his voice steady failed miserably. Finn was no king and he’d never be. I looked over at the men that flanked him and I wasn’t surprised. A change in power would come with great change in loyalty. “Even i
“What? How the fuck did he get here? How did it happen?” “I have no idea. Last I saw, they were marching to the throne room and nobody could stop them” My fist tightened beside me and I looked at Leonidas. I wanted to stay by his side but I also couldn’t let this happen. I jumped to my feet. “Make sure no one enters” I said to the guard as I marched down the hallway to the throne room. Fenrir pushed open the door of the throne room and a memory replayed in my head. The last time I’d been in here, the king had made me pick and someone had been murdered. At that time, I’d considered him the worst monster but seeing Finn seated on the throne, a triumphant smile on his face, it only told me that I’d been wrong in my judgement. Finn had never been a good person. He’s just been good at manipulating everyone into thinking he was the better off brother. And now, I’d pick ten ruthless Leonidas over one good Finn. “Some visitors” Finn said with a grin as he stood to his feet. A g
The smell of dust clawed me awake from unconsciousness. The first thing I took note of was the cloud of smoke that hovered in the air. I rolled to my side, ignoring the pounding headaches at the base of my skull. Christopher lay an inch away, a large boulder sitting on his feet. I moved to a feline position and crawled towards him. “Christopher…Chris” I nudged and he gasped awake like he’d just woken up from a trance. “Becca?” “I’m going to move this off you” I coughed out and pushed the boulder off his feet. “Fuck” he howled, clutching his feet tightly and I helped him up. I looked around the tower that now lay in ruins. Bodies scattered everywhere, unmoving. I clawed through the smoke, ignoring the sound of Christopher’s calls. I climbed over bodies, stumbling over one and almost falling over but I held myself up. I needed to find Leonidas. “Leonidas” I called loudly, still stumbling through the smoke and bodies. After what felt like forever, I arrived at the center o
I followed the old witch’s direction. I walked north for miles, running at some point. It wouldn’t be long until Lucious noticed I was gone and from the fierce look on his face, I knew he’d come after me.The dark fall lands stretched out into a dense forest I had no business in. But the determination to get to Leonidas kept me moving. I knew the exact moment I’d crossed over into the free land. The air changed and an electric surge charged through my veins. It felt like something had awakened in me.The path was lonely, leading to nowhere but I kept walking. My legs ached and my lungs burned. The temptation to stop grew with each second but I knew I couldn’t risk it. Leonidas had been gone for hours which meant he was closer to the sacred stones.A huge sigh of relief escaped through my lips as soon as I saw a house in the distance. I hurried towards it, running at full speed and bursting through the surprisingly open door. The house was quiet. Through the dark hallways, I dragg
