KING LEONIDAS POV

My head throbbed as the world slowly materialized around me. The memories of the previous night remained blurred. My limbs didn't feel like mine for a brief moment but underneath the confusion, a deep feeling of satisfaction thrummed through my veins.

It took a moment but I regained control and I rolled to my side, expecting to see the mangled body of yet another woman at my side but it was empty.

I jolted upwards and scanned the area. There was no woman or sign of blood around me. And for a simple moment, the insidious thought that I'd spent the night alone filled my head.

But it was impossible. For years now, I've spent every single full moon without fail with a woman in my bed. And every time, the woman became a victim of the beast. I was used to it.

What I wasn't used to was waking up with no sign of a woman and no blood painting the grass, yet I felt a satisfaction that I hadn't felt in years.

My beast was silent. The rage he dwelled in was gone. I felt better than I had in years and for a moment, it felt like I was normal.

I had to find the female that my beast rutted last night. It was imperative that I did. I scanned the area with my eyes and then I sniffed. No scent, just the wet grass and morning dew.

I prowled the area, sniffing and hoping I would pick up on any unusual scent. But nothing came up.

I moved further into the forest, combing every inch of it. On most occasions, my beast moved away from the scene of rutting.

The full moon was always hazy for me so I usually had no recollection of the face, place, or scent that my bed partner had. It was all dependent on whether my beast could remember but the chances were even lower.

The full moon forced him into his most primal state. No thoughts or rationality. Just the base instinct to rut and kill.

I heard the sounds of feet running and smelled them before they appeared.

"My lord" one of the guards greeted, holding out black pants. I took them from him and pulled them on.

"Where is Richard?" I asked impatiently. My beta was the best choice to handle the search for this woman.

"Here" Richard ran forward.

"We searched through the forest but we couldn't find you."

"I was searching for someone" I looked around.

"Who came into the forest at night?"

"No one my lord. Everyone is warned to steer clear of the forest at the full moon. Nobody would dare to disobey you"

"Well, somebody did."

"I didn't find anybody, I believe... you must have spent the night alone"

I stared at him, my brows raised in question.

"My beast tells me I did. Is he lying?"

"Not at all. Forgive me for insinuating such. It's just that. The woman who ought to have spent the night with you was found in the same spot she was dropped off. Untouched and unharmed"

My brows furrowed. The woman who had been kept for me was untouched?"

"Yes my lord"

"Bring her to me" I ordered as I walked past. I needed to see for myself.

The servants shifted out of my way as I arrived at the castle. Conversations stopped, eyes locked to the ground, they bowed as I walked past.

I don't ask for ot or acknowledge it.

I continued on my path, heading to find out something very important to me.

I found the drink cabinet as soon as I entered my office. The servant who had been cleaning mumbled an apology and scrambled out. I frowned. I hated to find them in my office.

I poured myself a drink as I waited for Richard's arrival. I was about to pour a third glass when the door opened.

He trudged in, a young woman trailing behind him, her posture submissive and eyes cast to the ground.

"My lord" Richard stepped out of the way and I studied her. I felt nothing. Nothing, not even a spark of recognition. My beast didn't stir.

"Look up" I ordered and her head snapped up.

"What is your name?"

"Melanie" she answered, her voice soft and breathless but still, it stirred nothing with me.

"You were in the forest at night?" She nodded.

"Words" I snapped.

"Yes my lord"

"What did you see?"

She glanced at Richard, fear coming off her in waves. She probably thought she had seen something she wasn't supposed to and was going to get into trouble because of it.

"Think carefully before you respond" I murmured and she swallowed. My words did nothing to calm her raging fear.

"N-Nothing" she stuttered.

"And what did you hear?"

"Sounds. Loud sounds but I didn't see anything" Her fear had worsened, the smell nauseating.

It was an emotion the beast fed on but today, he was silent. Unmoving and uninterested, just observing.

"Give her some gold. I want her for the next full moon" her eyes sparked but she said nothing.

"Yes my lord"

The girl bowed once and then she walked out the door. Richard followed closely but I stopped him before he crossed the doorway.

"I was with someone last night" I said to him.

"I couldn't find her scent in the forest. I want her found"

"Yes my lord" he bowed and he walked out, leaving me in the silence again.

I poured myself another drink and stalked to the window, looking outside and watching the grounds alive with activity.

Life was temporary and so was the power that came with it. For years, people had bided their time, waiting for the curse of doom to overtake me. It was unavoidable so the witches said. They wanted the power as soon as I was lost to the darkness.

I heard the whispers and plot but I never cared. I was always one to disappoint people and yet again, I was going to do it.

I just needed to find that woman.

The end of my doom.

I stood outside Leonidas' office for a long time. My fingers hovered over the knob for a long time but I didn't go with the temptation to open it. I was a ball of nerves. Suddenly, the door cracked open and I took a step back. Leonidas stared at me, a long look on his face. "How long were you planning on standing outside" he said softly. "I thought you were busy. I didn't want to interrupt" I lied swiftly but Leonidas still caught onto it. "What's the matter with you?" "Nothing. I..." "Come inside" he took my hand and pulled me in. "Tell me. What's wrong?" He asked in a soft voice as he sat on the chair, pulling me into his legs and wrapping his arms around me with that comforting warmth that made me forget everything. I leaned into his touch and my worries seemed to disappear. “I..” I paused and sucked in a breath. I didn’t know how to break the news to him. Everything had been going well between us for the last month. Some issues had not been formally resolved but w

I couldn’t believe my ears. It didn’t sound like I was hearing right. “He did what?” Cara sighed loudly. “He felt guilty and..” my heart clenched as I remembered that I’d lashed out at him about everything. Guilt ate me up. “I’ll speak to him” Leonidas said before I could get any word out. I nodded and stood up. “I’ll be back with Zeus” I mumbled and he nodded, staring at me with a longing I couldn’t quite explain. I walked to Zeus's office and found Fenrir standing inside. “What are you doing here Becca?” “I came to get Zeus for Leonidas. But you don’t have to go immediately. He’s having a private conversation with Christopher” Both men nodded and Zeus looked away but Fenrir continued to stare. “Are you okay? You look pale” “I’m fine” I forced out and turned away. My legs ached as I stood out in the hallway, too many things were happening all at once. While I was relieved that Leonidas was alive, Christopher’s sacrifice weighed down on me. I shouldn’t have said tho

KING LEONIDAS POVThe first thing I noticed was the guard holding onto Rebeccah. The scared look on her face.“Get your fucking hands off her” I growled and he jumped back, staring at me like he’d seen a ghost. My head suddenly felt heavy and my vision swayed. My fingers waved in the air as I tried to regain my composure.“Leo..” Rebeccah rushed over to me, her dainty fingers brushing my arms gently. Tingles shot up my arms from where her fingers touched me.“Are you okay?” She asked in panic, touching my face.“I’m fine. I…”“You’re supposed to be dead” Finn’s voice came from across the room and I finally looked over at him.“What the fuck are you doing?”His gaze shifted and his lips parted.“What I should have done a long time ago. Taking what belongs to me”His attempt to keep his voice steady failed miserably. Finn was no king and he’d never be. I looked over at the men that flanked him and I wasn’t surprised. A change in power would come with great change in loyalty. “Even i

“What? How the fuck did he get here? How did it happen?” “I have no idea. Last I saw, they were marching to the throne room and nobody could stop them” My fist tightened beside me and I looked at Leonidas. I wanted to stay by his side but I also couldn’t let this happen. I jumped to my feet. “Make sure no one enters” I said to the guard as I marched down the hallway to the throne room. Fenrir pushed open the door of the throne room and a memory replayed in my head. The last time I’d been in here, the king had made me pick and someone had been murdered. At that time, I’d considered him the worst monster but seeing Finn seated on the throne, a triumphant smile on his face, it only told me that I’d been wrong in my judgement. Finn had never been a good person. He’s just been good at manipulating everyone into thinking he was the better off brother. And now, I’d pick ten ruthless Leonidas over one good Finn. “Some visitors” Finn said with a grin as he stood to his feet. A g

The smell of dust clawed me awake from unconsciousness. The first thing I took note of was the cloud of smoke that hovered in the air. I rolled to my side, ignoring the pounding headaches at the base of my skull. Christopher lay an inch away, a large boulder sitting on his feet. I moved to a feline position and crawled towards him. “Christopher…Chris” I nudged and he gasped awake like he’d just woken up from a trance. “Becca?” “I’m going to move this off you” I coughed out and pushed the boulder off his feet. “Fuck” he howled, clutching his feet tightly and I helped him up. I looked around the tower that now lay in ruins. Bodies scattered everywhere, unmoving. I clawed through the smoke, ignoring the sound of Christopher’s calls. I climbed over bodies, stumbling over one and almost falling over but I held myself up. I needed to find Leonidas. “Leonidas” I called loudly, still stumbling through the smoke and bodies. After what felt like forever, I arrived at the center o

It wouldn’t be long until Lucious noticed I was gone and from the fierce look on his face, I knew he’d come after me.The dark fall lands stretched out into a dense forest I had no business in. But the determination to get to Leonidas kept me moving. I knew the exact moment I’d crossed over into the free land. The air changed and an electric surge charged through my veins. It felt like something had awakened in me.The path was lonely, leading to nowhere but I kept walking. My legs ached and my lungs burned. The temptation to stop grew with each second but I knew I couldn’t risk it. Leonidas had been gone for hours which meant he was closer to the sacred stones.A huge sigh of relief escaped through my lips as soon as I saw a house in the distance. I hurried towards it, running at full speed and bursting through the surprisingly open door. The house was quiet. Through the dark hallways, I dragg
