ANMELDENCHAPTER 2 - CASSIEL's RETURN
It sends me tumbling to the ground once more, a ragged breath leaving me as the tears I had been holding back streamed down my face. I glanced up at my assaulter and immediately lowered my face when I saw its Beta Thorn. He doesn’t say a word, just steps over my trembling form to where he’s heading. I get up to my feet, and wipe hurriedly at my tears. I will not let anyone else see me like this. Ignoring the sting in my cheek, I pick up my bucket and continue to my destination. That night after my kitchen duties, I laid cuddled on my cot in the closet turned room downstairs when someone barged into my room. I sit up with a start, my fingers curling around the handle of the knife under my blanket. I relax when I see Liora beaming at me from the doorway. I let out a sigh. “You didn’t have to break my door lock, you know.” She doesn’t acknowledge that, but runs to kneel by my side. “Elaris, he’s back!” My eyes go wide. “Cassiel?” She begins pulling me out of the bed. “Come on!” She pulls me out of my room, into the main house where everyone is rushing out to welcome the Alpha’s son from his return of two years of Alpha training. The pack is gathered outside. Liora goes to stand with their dad while I fall into the Omega’s line. Three black SUVs pull up into the pack field. The door opened, feet clad in sneakers touched the ground. My heart beat got faster as a full form came out. My breath caught as I stared at him. Tried to reconcile this man with the boy that kissed me on the tree branch years ago. He had filled out in places, muscles where lean arms used to be. He grew out his blond hair tying it in a bun. Liora was the first to react, she jumped onto her brother. Arms and legs wrapped around him. Cassiel hugged her back as tightly, his lips stretching into a wide smile. After what felt like forever, she let go for her father. There was only a small smile between father and son. A handshake, followed by small talk that I couldn’t hear. My eyes finally moved to others behind him. Soon to be beta and delta. Cassiel closest friends. Cassiel, his dad and together with his friends begin moving towards the packhouse. He stops and hugs someone from the crowd. When he pulls away, I see it’s Melody. They smile softly at each other and I fist my dress in my hands. He begins moving towards our line and I freeze, my gaze fixed on him. He pauses at my side and his gaze scans my face, stopping at the lingering bruise on my cheek. Hope flares inside me as I search his face for concern. But he only stares at me blankly. Confusion rises in me when he raises an eyebrow. It was then I finally felt the tugging of my dress from the Omega beside me. I looked at her and realized she was bowing, all the other servants were bowing except me and everyone was staring. I bend my back into a low bow and together with the rest of the pack. We all chorused, “Welcome back young Alpha.” When I finally rose, Cassiel was already moving back to the packhouse and I was left staring at his back, my heart and head hurting. *** The Moon bonding night is loud. Loud with the songs of the wolves, from howls to actual singing of our ancient language. Most of the wolves of mating age dance around the borne fire, singing songs, their voice lit with glee and anticipation. Older wolves talk excitedly with each other, drinks in hand. I hold a tray of cookies in hand. Even as a wolf who could possibly find her mate tonight. I’m still meant to serve. My eyes go to the moon, hiding behind the clouds. When the clock strikes twelve midnight, the clouds will move and werewolves will be able to know who their mates are. I look away from the moon, clutching the tray of cookies tightly in my hands. Everything would change if I happen to get a mate. I would be released from my pack duties if he doesn’t happen to be an Omega too which is rare. Liora approaches me from the crowd, dressed in a light blue floral gown, her golden hair glistening in the night. The male wolves eyes follow her, entranced by her beauty. I’m sure most of them are wishing to be mated to her. I touched my unruly brown locks subconsciously. “Hey,” she says when she greets me, she smiles then it drops. My brow furrows. “What’s wrong?” She shrugs and takes a cookie from the tray. “Nothing, just a bit nervous.” She bites into her cookie. I blink. Nervous was not a word you would associate with Liora. “Why?” She rubs her foot on the earth. “What if they don’t like me? My mate I mean.” “Of course, he would! Why wouldn’t he? You are a smart, beautiful and nicest person I know.” She gives me a small smile. “Do you really think so?” “Yeahhh,” I draw awkwardly, using I was the one receiving all the confidence talks. When Liora returns to her group of friends, I go about serving cookies and sweets. I spot Cassiel and his friends in the distance. I spin around, ready to head in the other direction when I heard the beta’s son, Michael call out: “Elaris over here!” he hollers, loud enough that someone without a wolf can hear him so yes, I can't afford to ignore him.CHAPTER 8 - SHE'S BACK?CASSIELHe turns away from me and so does Elaris. He places his head on the small of her back as they head back. My eyes narrow in on the contact, my heart squeezing painfully in my chest. My wolf whines. Your fault.Goddess, what have I done?Cody moves towards me.Are you alright? His worried voice enters the mind link.I keep a hand out to stop him from helping me if he intends to. I have already shown enough weakness in front of these Lycans.Elaris, this female, I don't think I've had a single clear though anytime I've been with her. I might have just handled this situation badly. We should leave. I say.He frowns. But…They are itching for a fight. If we stay, we will give them an excuse to. I tell himHe nods and glances at the other wolves. They nod too and we begin heading back home. Only when we are far away from the Lycan, did I allow myself to spit the blood clogging my throat.***When I got back to the pack, Michael and Melody were already waiting
CHAPTER 7 - PROVOKED HERCASSIELMate! My wolf howls joyfully within me.As usual I find myself being drawn to her. Even before we became mates, it had always been that way, her drawing me in, in ways I can't explain. I find myself falling hopelessly all over again. It felt like years ago, when her dad had been exiled and she was brought before us by the head warrior. She had peaked at me from behind the warrior legs. Big brown eyes filled with tears and at that moment, I knew I would do anything to protect her.How did I bring myself to let you go in the first place?I didn't realize I was moving towards Elaris until I had growling Lycans suddenly blocking my part.“My betrothed is beautiful no doubt,” Malik says. “But it’s best if you stay in your lane.”My eyes snap towards him. Betrothed? “What are you talking about?”My attention shifts back to my mate. He’s talking nonsense isn't he? “Elaris?”Those bright brown eyes snare me in, and I find myself drowning in them but she breaks
CHAPTER 6 - ELARIS OR LYSARA“Yeah, according to the crone. The only way to cure the blight is by ingesting the blood of a lycan, given freely.”The whole room goes silent.“Is this a trap or something?” I ask slowly.Cody looks uneasy. “I don’t think so.”Michael says, “We have to give it a try, what other choice do we have.”“Where are we going to find a Lycan that would be willing to do that?” Melody asks. “We wolves have not exactly been friendly to them.”She was right, The wolves have always them viewed as barbaric and thus cut off from our trades and alliances. Their dealings are mostly with other species.“The witches also said, the last Lycan sighting was in the eastern lands,” Cody says.I let out a tired sigh. “A rogue? They are not the best candidate.”They would attack before we even get a word out.Cody rolls his eyes. “No. They said it wasn’t a rogue.”“The witches actually gave you all this info for free,” Michael's voice was filled with surprise.Cody hesitates. “No,
CHAPTER 5 - THE BLIGHT Three years later Cassiel’s pov That sharp pain An Alpha feels when a mind link snaps, when the end of the link connected to pack member goes silent is heart wrenching. In the literal sense. This happens either when a wolf had gone rogue or had lost their life. The latter is the case here. Another sharp pain comes. Another link going silent. Another wolf under my care, gone. My hand tightens around the biro in my hand, my eyes staring blankly at the death reports on my desk. I have failed them. A knock comes on my door. “Come in.” My friend and beta, Michael walks in, his face grim. He slumps into the chair before my desk. “Any news from Cody?” “Not yet,” I reply, a cough coming up to my throat but I force it down. If the pack finds out the blight is also crawling through their Alpha’s system, the whole place will be in chaos. They can't afford to know. Enemies can't either. Michael drags his palm down his face.“It’s been two days. What’s keeping
CHAPTER 4 - THE LYCAN EMERGES Sharp pain slices through my chest, making me gasp. But without a wolf, I couldn’t experience the full pain of breaking a bond. Caspian falls to his knees, clawing at his chest, blood seeps through his chest down his hands. I take a step towards him then stop. I stand there watching him gasp in pain. The one who had been my safe haven since I was six and had lost my father to exile. His friends go down trying to stop him from clawing at his chest. I clench my hands into fist to keep myself from pushing Melody away from him.She shoots an accusing look at me. What? Okay it’s bad now that I said it first. The pack members start closing in around us, looks of accusations thrown at me and I try not to shrink into myself.Caspian looks up at me, his eyes dark with raw pain. Fur begins sprouting out of his skin and I take a step back. When he begins getting back to his feet, I turn and run back to the packhouse.I push open the packhouse door, trying not to
CHAPTER 3 - I REJECTED HIM I let out a breath and forced myself to relax. When I turn back, there’s a fake smile plastered on my face. Soon enough I’m standing in front of Cassiel, Melody, Michael and our delta’s son; Cody. Michael grins at me. “In the two years that we left, you have already grown much taller.” Cody adds quietly, “Taller than we expected.” Michael shoots him a quick look. Cody shrugs. “What? You brought it up.” “It’s fine,” I say, and truly it was. Even I was surprised at the way I had grown, as an Omega with no wolf. It would have been expected that I won't reach the height of an average werewolf. But I had grown much taller, much taller than the Alpha’s daughter which added to my list of abnormalities. Michael’s eyes narrow on my still reddened cheek. “What happened to your face?” Your dad did, but I don’t say that instead I place the tray forward. “Cookies?” I try not to look in Cassiel’s direction even though I can feel his gaze burning through the
