Small Portions

POV: James

"You sure you don't mind me sitting with you, Alpha James?"

"I'm technically in your domain right now." A small smile tugged at my mouth. "If you're fine with it, so am I. Though I'd move quick, before someone else barges in with more demands."

She nodded, filled a small bowl for herself, and sat across from me. Coffee was the only thing she'd had all morning, and lunch hadn't happened at all. Hungry as she clearly was, she wasn't about to pass up an actual hot meal, even sitting across from the one man who'd made her life harder than it ever needed to be. There was something almost surreal about it, sharing a table with the Alpha, like the walls between them had thinned just enough to let this small, ordinary moment sneak through.

And if I let myself notice how good he looks in this light, that's my business.

I frowned at the size of the portion she'd given herself. The frown deepened when I clocked how carefully she ate: small bites, slow, deliberate, like her body wasn't entirely convinced the food would still be there if she rushed.

I know that look. Seen it in warriors after survival training, when a few days of nothing shrinks your stomach down until eating fast makes you sick.

Is nobody feeding her right?

The thought sat in me like a stone. I'd seen the stores in this kitchen with my own eyes. She ran the damn place. There was no shortage of food here, and one rule I'd carved into stone the day I became Alpha was that nobody in Bloodmoon pack went hungry. Watching her eat like someone who'd learned not to trust a full plate stirred something ugly in my chest, guilt tangled up with an anger I didn't have a name for yet.

Maybe she just never gets the time. If people keep bursting in on her, the way Richard just did, when the hell would she ever sit down long enough to actually eat?

I linked every pack member right then, laying down a new rule without much room for argument. Kitchen and staff would be off limits for forty minutes after lunch was cleared each day, no exceptions. It wasn't much. But it was something concrete, a small correction to a wrong I was only now starting to see clearly.

Trishelle, for her part, was just grateful for a real meal in front of her. She knew she was already behind on dinner prep and decided, quietly, that she'd deal with the fallout later. Right now she wanted this: the warmth of the food, the strange, rare comfort of not eating alone.

And the way he's watching me like I matter. I could get used to that, if I let myself.

I finished first, stood, and rinsed my dishes in the sink. When she started to rise to clear her own bowl, I crossed the kitchen and pressed her gently back down onto her stool, my hand warm against her shoulder for a beat longer than it needed to be.

"It's fine. Finish eating first, chores can wait." My voice dropped, rough at the edges. "Have seconds if you want them. Don't hold back on my account."

I headed for the back door, then paused, hand on the frame. "Don't push yourself today. Keep dinner simple, and take care of that hand. We don't want it getting infected. If it looks off at all, go see the doctor."

"Yes, Alpha." She bowed her head. "And thank you."

I stepped out with a small smile tugging at my mouth, the quiet gratitude in her voice trailing after me longer than I expected, settling somewhere under my ribs like an unfinished thought.

I can't undo how I've treated her.

But maybe I can start making it right. Starting now.

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Serving the Line

POV: Trishelle"Let me drop my stuff off first, then I'll give you a hand." Sammy grabbed the bag he'd tossed aside the second he'd spotted me, slinging it over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. We walked toward the house together, falling into step easy, the kind of easy that only came from years of knowing someone inside and out.True to his word, he threw himself into the last of the party prep, ending up behind the bar for most of it, mixing drinks with way more enthusiasm than skill. I knew this kitchen like the back of my hand, so I found myself helping serve food even though the whole thing was buffet style. Old habits died hard. I couldn't sit still while there was work to be done, and some small, restless part of me still felt like a guest in my own life whenever my hands weren't busy. The party was pushing two hours in when Sammy caught my hand and pulled me toward the food table, his grip warm and a little too insistent. He grabbed himself a plate and shoved one into my

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Growl

POV: JamesI let myself watch her for half a second, just her hair whipping behind her like she owned the damn wind. Then it hit me, that gut-punch feeling, when she blew right past me without even a glance. Not one. I'd been so sure she saw me. So sure tonight was going to be different. She saw me. She had to have seen me.I spun around and there she was, wrapped up tight in some guy's arms. Some guy I didn't know, didn't recognize, didn't like the smell of. Her face was tucked into the stranger's shoulder like she'd done it a hundred times before, like she belonged there.A growl ripped out of me before I could catch it. My claws pricked under my skin, sharp and hungry, and heat rolled through me, ugly and possessive and completely wrong for a crowd this size. Mine. The thought slammed through me hard and fast, animal and unreasonable. If a pack of kids hadn't picked that second to crash into my legs, screaming and laughing, high on cake and chaos, I might have done something stupid

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   The Ladder

POV: JamesI wanted to know exactly what the buzz about Trishelle was all about. Curiosity alone would've justified stepping outside. But that wasn't what had me on edge. It was my wolf, pacing restless circles in the back of my skull, growing louder and more insistent by the minute. The animal clawed at my composure in a way I hadn't felt in years, some primal thread pulled tight, refusing to slacken no matter how hard I tried to ignore it.I tried to push through the last of my paperwork, pen hovering over the same line for the tenth time, but the pacing wouldn't quit. Eventually I gave up pretending I could focus through it.Just going to check what the noise is about. Settle the wolf down. That's all this is.I repeated it like a promise I didn't quite believe.I headed for the backyard and found it transformed. Balloons bobbed in the breeze, lights strung through every tree in sight, the whole yard humming with energy my pack hadn't felt in longer than I cared to admit. Laughter

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Party Central

POV: The PackSaturday morning hit, and by the time the sun burned all the way into the sky, Richard's birthday prep was already a circus. Party started at dusk, which meant there was a shitload to do, and Richard had zero trouble rounding up a pack of single she-wolves eager to help. They showed up one after another, tossing out suggestions nobody asked for, dragging their feet on tasks that should've taken ten minutes tops. Every single one of them wanted him to look up and notice her.Normally he'd be tearing up some club or dive bar for his birthday, chasing loud music and strange bodies and a night that dissolved into blur by sunrise. Throwing the party at home instead had tongues wagging all over the pack. People whispered he was finally sick of the chase, maybe even ready to settle. Whether that was true or complete bullshit, it bought him serious goodwill with the females, who eyed him now like he was some kind of riddle worth cracking open.Let them wonder, he thought. Keeps

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Two Months of Restraint

POV: JamesTwo months since that conversation with Richard, and my brother had thrown himself into planning his own birthday party like it was some kind of holy war. Set for this weekend, and he'd gone at it with an intensity I didn't see coming, treating the whole thing less like a celebration and more like a mission with body counts. First request: everyone off duty for the night. Everyone except the wolves stuck on border patrol, because even Richard wasn't stupid enough to leave us exposed. Then he'd sorted the food out himself, quietly, specifically so Trishelle would be free to actually attend instead of working the damn thing like she always did. That detail didn't slip past me. It only made the itch under my skin worse, that gut feeling that something bigger was coiled up underneath all his scheming. What exactly are you planning, Rowdy Ricky?I'd asked more than once how any of this was supposed to fix things with Trishelle. Richard's answer never changed, delivered with that

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Under the Crescent Moon Again

POV: JamesI stormed off the training field, furious. Furious at Richard, furious at Henry for that look he'd given me, but underneath all of it, furious mostly at myself.I shouldn't have followed her last night. I knew it walking down there.Another crescent moon had come and gone, and despite every rational argument I'd made to myself, I'd trailed after Trishelle to the lake again anyway. I'd told myself I wouldn't. I'd told myself the same damn thing the night before that, and the night before that, and every time my feet carried me down the same worn path regardless.Real strong willpower you've got there, man.Even having already seen her like that once, the sight still hit me like the first time, like something had reached into my chest and wrung it out slow.Something about her had changed, though. I wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but she didn't look nearly as thin as before. Her hips had filled out, softer now, her stomach no longer hollow. Even her cheeks
