The Change I Notice

POV: Richard

I couldn't stop turning it over in my head. What the hell had I walked in on that day in the kitchen? And more importantly, what the fuck was going on with my Alpha?

That was the first time I'd ever seen James lose it like that over the kitchen Omega. The confusion followed me around for days, needling at me whenever things got quiet, surfacing at odd moments during meals, right before sleep, refusing to let me settle. I started keeping a closer eye on things after that. Aside from the obvious, James staring a beat too long during meals, the kitchen going strangely off-limits for forty minutes after lunch, nothing much seemed different.

Oh. Except for the biggest change of all.

Everyone called her by her actual name now.

I huffed out a laugh remembering the day that rule got enforced. A couple of pups, too young to know better, had called her Trash within earshot of the Alpha and gotten the fright of their short lives for it. James's aura had rolled off him thick and furious, enough to send the pups scattering and their parents scrambling to apologize. I still remembered how the air itself seemed to grow heavier in that moment, how even the seasoned warriors nearby had stiffened without quite knowing why.

Never seen him care that much about anything Omega related before. Interesting.

I finished my afternoon sparring session drenched in sweat, grabbed some water, and dropped onto the grass to catch my breath. The sun sat low now, painting everything gold, and for a while I just let my thoughts drift, content to watch the dust settle over the training yard. My mind was still wandering when someone called Trishelle's name across the yard. I looked up in time to catch her heading toward the garden.

Huh. Never really looked at her before. Actually looked, I mean.

She was fine to look at, tall or not. Something quietly graceful lived in the way she moved, unhurried, like she'd long since stopped trying to draw anyone's attention and had grown comfortable in her own skin because of it. Considering how little she socialized and how easy she was on the eyes, it genuinely surprised me that nobody had ever made a move on her.

Rowdy Ricky, and I've never even tried? My reputation's slipping.

I'd never been picky about who warmed my bed, man or woman, so long as they were willing. Glancing around at the other warriors sparring nearby, I could tell I wasn't the only one who noticed her shape when she walked. A couple of heads had turned as she passed, eyes lingering a moment too long before flicking away, like the men were afraid of getting caught looking. Yet none of them had ever made a move either.

Maybe everyone around here's lost their hunting instincts. The she-wolves throw themselves at anything with a pulse, so I guess the guys forgot how to actually chase something.

I tapped my fingers against my raised knee, a slow grin spreading across my face as an idea started forming, equal parts mischief and curiosity.

That gives me an idea.

I wasn't entirely sure yet what I planned to do with it. But needling my Alpha over an Omega James clearly wanted sounded like an excellent way to pass the time. And if it happened to get a rise out of Trishelle's admirers too, well, that was just a bonus.

POV: Trishelle

I woke with a gasp, sweat sticking my shirt to my back, heart hammering against my ribs like it was trying to break out.

Just a dream. Just a dream.

I tried to piece it back together while my breathing settled, fingers curling into the blanket beneath me like I needed something to ground me in the present. I'd been young in it, still a pup, sitting in front of a cake with candles lit and glowing warm in the dark. I couldn't see any faces around her, the whole scene swallowed in shadow, but I could hear voices singing happy birthday, warm and familiar in a way that made my chest ache even now. The ache cut sharper the harder I tried to remember whose voices they'd been.

Then I'd leaned in to blow out the candles, and a sudden gust of wind sent the small flames roaring into an inferno. The singing twisted into screaming, the whole scene consumed in fire before I could even process what was happening.

I used to have nightmares like this all the time. Haven't had one this bad in years.

I clutched my chest and forced my breathing even, willing my pulse to slow. Then I crawled out of bed and made my way to the little tattered suitcase tucked in the corner of my room, the only piece of luggage I'd ever owned. Inside sat an old scarf, worn soft from years of handling, its edges frayed and its color long faded from whatever it must have once been. I pulled it out and buried my nose in it.

Rosie's scent still clung to the fabric, faint but unmistakable, and I let the tears come without trying to stop them. The same question circled my mind for what felt like the thousandth time.

What did I do to deserve this life? What crime did I commit before I could even talk?

I carried the scarf back to bed, nestled it under my cheek, and let myself pretend, just for a few minutes, that I was curled up in Rosie's lap again, that big rough palm stroking gently through my hair, humming some tuneless little melody the way she always used to when I couldn't sleep. With that memory wrapped around me like a blanket, I finally drifted back to sleep.

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   New Ground

POV: The Goldmoon AlphaI didn't have to come out here myself. I had a meeting close by that would've let me get updates the easy way, through email like a normal person. But some things needed eyes on them, not just words on a screen. After everything my pack had survived to get to this point, I owed them that much. The Elders had come through two days ago with a list of recommendations meant to speed up approval. I'd handed the logistics over to my people, the same way my father once handed things to me, trusting them to get it right. But the second I stepped out of my car and started toward the Omega quarters, one thing hit me hard.Heating's off. That's on me.Their old territory stayed warm most of the year, so nobody thought twice about how much colder this new land would run. Omegas didn't have a wolf's thick skin against the cold, not like the rest of them did, and the current setup wasn't going to cut it. I made a mental note to handle it myself. Some things were too importan

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Who the Hell Is That

POV: JamesI yanked Steve away from his family with zero ceremony, dragging him behind one of the trees at the edge of the yard. A low growl already built in my throat, and I barely noticed how tight my fingers had curled into the fabric of Steve's sleeve."Steve. Who the hell is that?"Steve blinked, clearly caught off guard by the sudden edge in my voice. "Who are you talking about, Alpha?""That punk. Standing there, grinning at Trishelle like he owns the place."Steve turned to follow my line of sight just as the two figures disappeared toward the pack house. Recognition dawned on his face, easing into something between amusement and reassurance. "Oh, that's Sammy. Samuel Parker. I took him on a few years back, trained him up for business work. Good worker, sharp mind. Hasn't been back in two years though.""He's an orphan too, isn't he?" My frown deepened. Jealousy still simmered under my skin even with the explanation. If Sammy grew up orphaned like Trishelle, that would at leas

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Serving the Line

POV: Trishelle"Let me drop my stuff off first, then I'll give you a hand." Sammy grabbed the bag he'd tossed aside the second he'd spotted me, slinging it over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. We walked toward the house together, falling into step easy, the kind of easy that only came from years of knowing someone inside and out.True to his word, he threw himself into the last of the party prep, ending up behind the bar for most of it, mixing drinks with way more enthusiasm than skill. I knew this kitchen like the back of my hand, so I found myself helping serve food even though the whole thing was buffet style. Old habits died hard. I couldn't sit still while there was work to be done, and some small, restless part of me still felt like a guest in my own life whenever my hands weren't busy. The party was pushing two hours in when Sammy caught my hand and pulled me toward the food table, his grip warm and a little too insistent. He grabbed himself a plate and shoved one into my

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Growl

POV: JamesI let myself watch her for half a second, just her hair whipping behind her like she owned the damn wind. Then it hit me, that gut-punch feeling, when she blew right past me without even a glance. Not one. I'd been so sure she saw me. So sure tonight was going to be different. She saw me. She had to have seen me.I spun around and there she was, wrapped up tight in some guy's arms. Some guy I didn't know, didn't recognize, didn't like the smell of. Her face was tucked into the stranger's shoulder like she'd done it a hundred times before, like she belonged there.A growl ripped out of me before I could catch it. My claws pricked under my skin, sharp and hungry, and heat rolled through me, ugly and possessive and completely wrong for a crowd this size. Mine. The thought slammed through me hard and fast, animal and unreasonable. If a pack of kids hadn't picked that second to crash into my legs, screaming and laughing, high on cake and chaos, I might have done something stupid

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   The Ladder

POV: JamesI wanted to know exactly what the buzz about Trishelle was all about. Curiosity alone would've justified stepping outside. But that wasn't what had me on edge. It was my wolf, pacing restless circles in the back of my skull, growing louder and more insistent by the minute. The animal clawed at my composure in a way I hadn't felt in years, some primal thread pulled tight, refusing to slacken no matter how hard I tried to ignore it.I tried to push through the last of my paperwork, pen hovering over the same line for the tenth time, but the pacing wouldn't quit. Eventually I gave up pretending I could focus through it.Just going to check what the noise is about. Settle the wolf down. That's all this is.I repeated it like a promise I didn't quite believe.I headed for the backyard and found it transformed. Balloons bobbed in the breeze, lights strung through every tree in sight, the whole yard humming with energy my pack hadn't felt in longer than I cared to admit. Laughter

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Party Central

POV: The PackSaturday morning hit, and by the time the sun burned all the way into the sky, Richard's birthday prep was already a circus. Party started at dusk, which meant there was a shitload to do, and Richard had zero trouble rounding up a pack of single she-wolves eager to help. They showed up one after another, tossing out suggestions nobody asked for, dragging their feet on tasks that should've taken ten minutes tops. Every single one of them wanted him to look up and notice her.Normally he'd be tearing up some club or dive bar for his birthday, chasing loud music and strange bodies and a night that dissolved into blur by sunrise. Throwing the party at home instead had tongues wagging all over the pack. People whispered he was finally sick of the chase, maybe even ready to settle. Whether that was true or complete bullshit, it bought him serious goodwill with the females, who eyed him now like he was some kind of riddle worth cracking open.Let them wonder, he thought. Keeps
