The Cut

POV: James

James watched her work and found himself impressed despite everything. He'd always known she could cook - the whole pack lived off proof of that daily - but he hadn't understood how efficient she actually was until he saw it up close. Meat prepped in what felt like seconds, vegetables already half diced by the time his brain caught up to what she'd started. Her hands moved with a precision that seemed almost unconscious, like her body had memorized the motions long before her mind had ever agreed to them.

Years of practice does that to a person. Or years of getting hurt for being slow.

The thought soured his mood before he could stop it. He found himself wondering how many times she'd been forced to move fast, and for whom, and what had happened on the occasions she hadn't moved fast enough.

A strand of hair slipped loose from the bun she always wore, curling against her cheek, and his hand moved before his brain gave permission, reaching out to tuck it behind her ear.

She flinched violently.

The knife skidded sideways and bit into her thumb, and blood welled up fast against her pale skin.

"Ouch." Trishelle's whole body curled inward, hand clutched to her chest, eyes squeezed shut like she was bracing for something far worse than a cut.

She thinks I'm about to hit her.

That realization landed like a fist to his own gut. He pulled his hand back, disappointment settling somewhere behind his ribs that he didn't have a name for yet. A dozen questions crowded his throat - who had taught her to flinch like that, how long she'd lived expecting pain instead of comfort - but he swallowed them all down. Then he saw the blood actually welling up between her fingers and every other thought fell away.

He grabbed a kitchen towel and reached for her hand.

She resisted at first, small and stubborn, but he was stronger, and she seemed to decide fighting him wasn't worth whatever price it might cost her. That thought alone made something in his chest tighten uncomfortably. He tsked under his breath at the sight of the wound once he got a proper look - small, but deep enough to worry him. He tugged her to the sink, ran water over the cut to clean it, dried it carefully, and peeled the towel back to check the damage.

The bleeding had already slowed. The wound itself hadn't.

She's really an Omega. A regular wolf would've healed this in minutes.

It bothered him more than a small pink line on someone's thumb had any right to. He turned her hand gently in his, studying the cut as if staring at it long enough might will it closed. Without thinking it through, he lifted her hand to his mouth and blew a soft breath across the cut.

Trishelle blinked up at him, clearly caught off guard by the gesture. Color rose faintly in her cheeks, though whether from embarrassment or something else, he couldn't tell. "Umm. Alpha James, it's okay. It's just a flesh wound. I can put a bandage on it."

He barely registered the words. He was too aware of how soft her skin felt under his fingers, how the pads of her palm were rough with calluses that told their own story about the hours she spent working. His thumb traced over one without meaning to, memorizing the texture as though it might explain something about her he hadn't yet earned the right to know. Some reckless part of him wanted to press his lips to that same warm palm, and before he'd fully decided to do it, he was already lifting her hand higher.

The kitchen door swung open.

Richard walked in, stopped dead, and took in what had to be the strangest thing he'd seen all week. His Alpha, halfway to kissing the kitchen Omega's hand, and said Omega just standing there letting it happen without a hint of protest.

The second they registered him, they pulled apart fast enough that James nearly stumbled. To his own irritation, he was the one who ended up looking away, heat crawling up his neck, while Trishelle just looked confused more than embarrassed, as though she couldn't quite work out why he'd let go so abruptly.

"Don't mind me," Richard said, clearly biting back a grin, "just grabbing some refreshments. Hey, Trash, can you - "

A growl cut him off before he finished the sentence, low and dangerous, rumbling straight through the pack link.

Her name is Trishelle. James snapped it hard enough that he felt Richard flinch on the other end of the connection. You got that? Don't let me hear you call her that disgusting nickname again. In fact, make sure everyone else knows it too.

"Yes, Alpha," Richard answered aloud, glancing between the two of them like he was trying to solve a puzzle he didn't have all the pieces to. It struck him as strange, considering James was the one who'd coined that nickname back when they were pups, but he wasn't about to say that out loud. He redirected instead. "Can I get refreshments for me and the five guys on patrol with me?"

Trishelle nodded and got to work packing water, juice, and a handful of snacks without a word, though James noticed the faint tremor still lingering in her bandaged hand, and hated himself a little for having caused it.

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Serving the Line

POV: Trishelle"Let me drop my stuff off first, then I'll give you a hand." Sammy grabbed the bag he'd tossed aside the second he'd spotted me, slinging it over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. We walked toward the house together, falling into step easy, the kind of easy that only came from years of knowing someone inside and out.True to his word, he threw himself into the last of the party prep, ending up behind the bar for most of it, mixing drinks with way more enthusiasm than skill. I knew this kitchen like the back of my hand, so I found myself helping serve food even though the whole thing was buffet style. Old habits died hard. I couldn't sit still while there was work to be done, and some small, restless part of me still felt like a guest in my own life whenever my hands weren't busy. The party was pushing two hours in when Sammy caught my hand and pulled me toward the food table, his grip warm and a little too insistent. He grabbed himself a plate and shoved one into my

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Growl

POV: JamesI let myself watch her for half a second, just her hair whipping behind her like she owned the damn wind. Then it hit me, that gut-punch feeling, when she blew right past me without even a glance. Not one. I'd been so sure she saw me. So sure tonight was going to be different. She saw me. She had to have seen me.I spun around and there she was, wrapped up tight in some guy's arms. Some guy I didn't know, didn't recognize, didn't like the smell of. Her face was tucked into the stranger's shoulder like she'd done it a hundred times before, like she belonged there.A growl ripped out of me before I could catch it. My claws pricked under my skin, sharp and hungry, and heat rolled through me, ugly and possessive and completely wrong for a crowd this size. Mine. The thought slammed through me hard and fast, animal and unreasonable. If a pack of kids hadn't picked that second to crash into my legs, screaming and laughing, high on cake and chaos, I might have done something stupid

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   The Ladder

POV: JamesI wanted to know exactly what the buzz about Trishelle was all about. Curiosity alone would've justified stepping outside. But that wasn't what had me on edge. It was my wolf, pacing restless circles in the back of my skull, growing louder and more insistent by the minute. The animal clawed at my composure in a way I hadn't felt in years, some primal thread pulled tight, refusing to slacken no matter how hard I tried to ignore it.I tried to push through the last of my paperwork, pen hovering over the same line for the tenth time, but the pacing wouldn't quit. Eventually I gave up pretending I could focus through it.Just going to check what the noise is about. Settle the wolf down. That's all this is.I repeated it like a promise I didn't quite believe.I headed for the backyard and found it transformed. Balloons bobbed in the breeze, lights strung through every tree in sight, the whole yard humming with energy my pack hadn't felt in longer than I cared to admit. Laughter

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Party Central

POV: The PackSaturday morning hit, and by the time the sun burned all the way into the sky, Richard's birthday prep was already a circus. Party started at dusk, which meant there was a shitload to do, and Richard had zero trouble rounding up a pack of single she-wolves eager to help. They showed up one after another, tossing out suggestions nobody asked for, dragging their feet on tasks that should've taken ten minutes tops. Every single one of them wanted him to look up and notice her.Normally he'd be tearing up some club or dive bar for his birthday, chasing loud music and strange bodies and a night that dissolved into blur by sunrise. Throwing the party at home instead had tongues wagging all over the pack. People whispered he was finally sick of the chase, maybe even ready to settle. Whether that was true or complete bullshit, it bought him serious goodwill with the females, who eyed him now like he was some kind of riddle worth cracking open.Let them wonder, he thought. Keeps

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Two Months of Restraint

POV: JamesTwo months since that conversation with Richard, and my brother had thrown himself into planning his own birthday party like it was some kind of holy war. Set for this weekend, and he'd gone at it with an intensity I didn't see coming, treating the whole thing less like a celebration and more like a mission with body counts. First request: everyone off duty for the night. Everyone except the wolves stuck on border patrol, because even Richard wasn't stupid enough to leave us exposed. Then he'd sorted the food out himself, quietly, specifically so Trishelle would be free to actually attend instead of working the damn thing like she always did. That detail didn't slip past me. It only made the itch under my skin worse, that gut feeling that something bigger was coiled up underneath all his scheming. What exactly are you planning, Rowdy Ricky?I'd asked more than once how any of this was supposed to fix things with Trishelle. Richard's answer never changed, delivered with that

  • The Rejected Omega's Bastard Heir   Under the Crescent Moon Again

POV: JamesI stormed off the training field, furious. Furious at Richard, furious at Henry for that look he'd given me, but underneath all of it, furious mostly at myself.I shouldn't have followed her last night. I knew it walking down there.Another crescent moon had come and gone, and despite every rational argument I'd made to myself, I'd trailed after Trishelle to the lake again anyway. I'd told myself I wouldn't. I'd told myself the same damn thing the night before that, and the night before that, and every time my feet carried me down the same worn path regardless.Real strong willpower you've got there, man.Even having already seen her like that once, the sight still hit me like the first time, like something had reached into my chest and wrung it out slow.Something about her had changed, though. I wasn't sure if my eyes were playing tricks on me, but she didn't look nearly as thin as before. Her hips had filled out, softer now, her stomach no longer hollow. Even her cheeks
