Alaric's POV

We left Elderwick at seven in the morning. Raven had coffee in a travel cup and I drove. The road was quiet at that hour and we did not talk much on the way down because there was not much to say that we had not already said the night before when we went through the plan together.

We got to the estate at half past eight and my father was already in the records room with three of the bound volumes open on the large table. He looked up when we came in and said, "Good, sit down."

Raven's POV Cael turned two on a Saturday and we had a small gathering in the garden. By small, I mean the people who mattered and nobody else because I had learned over the past two years that small and right was better than large and complicated in almost every situation. Lord Thorne arrived first and he came through the gate with a wrapped gift that was larger than I expected. When Cael saw him, he said his name clearly and ran across the garden toward him. Lord Thorne caught him, held him up and looked at him for a moment with the expression he always worked hard to keep off his face in public and did not bother hiding in the garden. Dara came twenty minutes later with Maren beside her. I had not known Maren was coming because Dara had arranged it quietly. When I saw them come through the gate together, I stood at the kitchen door for a moment before going out to meet them. Maren looked at me and said, "Dara said it was alright." "It is more than alright," I said. Sable arri

Raven's POV Three months after graduation, we were settled in Thorne territory in a house that was ours, not a university housing system, a safe house arrangement, or anyone else's estate. I stood at the kitchen window on a Tuesday morning in October. I looked at the garden where Cael was running in circles around one of Lord Thorne's warriors who had unofficially appointed himself Cael's favorite person sometime around the succession confirmation and had not relinquished the position since. The warrior's name was Corren. He was the same one who had spoken to Maren at the edge of the mating ceremony garden and he had a way with Cael that had nothing to do with it. He just got down to his level and stayed there. Cael had decided early on that this was the correct approach and rewarded it with complete loyalty. I watched them in the garden and drank my coffee. Then I thought about how ordinary this looked from the outside and how much had happened to produce this ordinary Tuesday mo

Raven's POV I woke up before the alarm and lay still for a moment. The room was grey with early light and Cael and Alaric were still asleep. I thought this was the day and then I got up. I showered, got dressed, and wore my hair down because I almost always wore it up. Today felt like a day for something different. When I came out, Alaric was awake and sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at his phone. Then he looked up and said, "You look different." "My hair is down," I said. "It looks good," he said. "Get dressed," I said. "Lord Thorne is going to be there at eight." He got up and I got Cael ready. He was in a cooperative mood which I was grateful for because uncooperative Cael on graduation morning was not something either of us needed. By half past seven, we were ready. The dorm room looked strange with both desks cleared and the portable crib folded against the wall. This was because we had packed most things the day before and the room that had been home for two years

Alaric's POV The night before graduation, I could not settle. Raven could tell because she looked up from her book at half past nine and said, "Come sit on the floor with me." I looked at her. "Why the floor?" "Because the floor is better for conversations that need to go somewhere," she said. "I read that somewhere." "You made that up," I said. "Sit on the floor, Alaric," she said. I closed my laptop, sat on the floor across from her and she put her book down. Cael was asleep in the crib behind her and the campus was quiet outside the window. The room was small around us in a way that felt like closeness rather than constraint. "Talk," she said. "About what?" I said. "About whatever is making you unable to sit still for more than ten minutes," she said. I looked at the floor and then back at her. Then I said, "I keep thinking about the beginning." It never stopped feeling like the moment everything changed. "Which beginning?" she said. "Valkhor high," I said. "Walking in

Raven's POV Sable graduated a week before us and threw a small gathering in her dorm room the night before her ceremony. When I say small, I mean eight people maximum. There was good food from the east gate place, no decorations, and Cael falling asleep in the ,corner on a pile of jackets belonging to people he had decided were acceptable. She sent the invitation as a message that said, “Coming over tonight, bring Cael. Do not bring anything else because I do not need anything and if you bring something, I will make you take it home.” I sent back okay and Alaric sent back understood. She sent back the goods. We walked over on the seventeenth, and the goods room was already half full. Sable was in the middle of a conversation she finished before coming over to us and that was very Sable. She did not abandon conversations to greet people because she thought that was rude to both parties and I had always liked that about her. She came over eventually and looked at Cael on my hip. The

Raven's POV The final semester moved faster than any before it. I noticed that speed in a good way rather than a panicked one because fast meant things were happening and things happening meant we were close to something that mattered. Close felt different from far in ways I was still getting used to appreciating. My last major assignment was due on a Wednesday and I submitted it at half past ten in the morning. I walked out of the submission building into the campus and stopped on the path outside. I stood there for a moment because finishing something that large did not announce itself with anything dramatic. It just ended and you were standing outside a building on a Wednesday morning with nothing pressing in your hands for the first time in a long time. I called Dara. She picked up on the second ring and said, "How did it go?" "I submitted," I said quietly. "I know you did," she said. "How did it go?" "Well," I said. "I think well." "I always knew it would," she said. "Y

Raven's POV I woke up early before the sun came up because I couldn't sleep anymore and I was tired of feeling weak and helpless and waiting for someone to try to kill me again. Breeze was already awake and sitting by the window, and when she saw me get up, she made a small sound and tilted her h

Raven's POV Friday morning, I woke up before dawn feeling restless. Breeze had been pushing at me all night trying to get my attention. I finally gave in and got out of bed. "What do you want?" I asked her. "We need to connect," she said. "Really connect. Not just talking, but bonding." "How d

Raven's POV Thursday morning, I walked into school and immediately knew something was wrong. People were staring at me more than usual, and when I passed groups in the hallway, they would stop talking and whisper. "What's going on?" I asked Breeze. "I don't know, but I don't like it," she said.

Raven's POV Tuesday started like any other exhausting day. I woke up at five for my morning dog walking job, then went to school. After school, I had three tutoring sessions back to back, followed by a shift at the pack market selling jewelry until nine. By the time I got home, I was so tired, b
