Raven's pov

He pressed his nose into my cotton underwear, spreading my legs further.

My heart skipped a beat, wolf going feral as he reached for the soaked and tore it off with a groan wrapping it around his bulging member.

Then, as he stroked himself, he leaned down and whispered heatedly in my ear, “Brace yourself, piggy, by the time I'm done with you.

..you won't even remember that dork's name.”

All the blood in my body rushed up to my cheeks as I closed my eyes and tried to recall how I ended up here like this with my adoptive brother.

Just 7 hours ago I was shopping with my best friend, Luella, the gamma's daughter.

Two of her friends-twins-had tagged along, propping themselves as my unsolicited judges. I'd step out of the changing booth and only the look on their faces made me want to burn the dresses I wore.

“What about this one?” I said striking an awkward pose in a pink floral fitted gown, Laura placed her palm over her lips; “For real?”

She nudged her twin, Lana, who was already giggling.

“Oh, Raven if only we could have just half of your confidence,”

My face was flushed, and I was back in the changing booth when I stared at the mirror inside. My stomach churned.

To say the way the fabric was sticking to my body was unflattering was a huge understatement, I looked a mess. Stomach shooting out and everything.

It hadn't looked so bad before I stepped out, but after receiving their comments, each detail stuck out, and I wanted to slap myself across the face, but even thinking it looked good for a second.

“Don't be so hard on yourself, I seriously don't know why Luella even invited them!” My wolf, Breeze, tried to console me.

She was my biggest cheerleader, it was crazy that I had only awakened her on my 16th big moon. Most people already had theirs at 12 to 14. The moment Luella found out I had awakened my wolf, she insisted I have an Awakening party.

I had resisted at first, and the Awakening party at 16 was like advertising to everyone that I was a late bloomer.

But she was bent on it and since I could hardly ever say no to my best friend, I agreed.

The party was tonight–Yah-she had gone through my wardrobe this morning and decided that I didn't have one good-looking dress for the party.

“Let's go shopping!” She'd insisted.

Now we were here and I felt ridiculous, as always.

Maybe clothes would look good on me if I were petite and soft like most girls of the Valkhor pack. But it was like my body was trying to remind me of an outsider that only got the chance to live here because of the generosity of the Alpha and Luna, who decided to adopt me when they found me abandoned at the border, crying out my lungs.

“Raven, I hope you're not offended, you know how those two are, they love to joke,” Luella said, stepping into the changing booth.

“That dress just wasn't your color, I'm sure we'll find something else,”

“I'm good,” I said trying to reach for the zipper of the dress myself, “I think I've already spent enough arranging this party maybe I should just wear something comfortable in my wardrobe,”

“By comfortable you mean your baggy hoodie and sweatpants, right?” She said in a disapproving tone, “Come on, Raven, you're cute little crush Freddy is even going to be at the party. Don't you want to impress him?”

I blushed lightly, remembering Freddy Gregor; his family was mid-rank but had strong ancestral ties to the Alpha family.

He was one of the few boys who talked to me in school and didn't chuckle indecisively when I walked past. We also sat right next to each other, and he even helped me pick up my pen once when it fell.

Breeze wasn't impressed by him and insisted we wait for our mate, but I liked him, and if I wasn't just being delusional, I think he might like me a bit too.

“All right…” I said with a defeated sigh, “Just one more dress and that's it,”

Luella grinned and tried to get me out of the dress, but she was only able to make it three inches down before the zipper got stuck.

“Don't worry, I got this!” She sounded confident in herself, but I was worried.

“Well maybe we should call somebody-”

Snap

The zipper broke and it was stuck.

“Girl I'm so sorry I thought I could…”

“Just call somebody,” I said, covering my face with my palm trying my best not to break into a sob.

This was so humiliating.

Laura and Lana are going to find out why I'm stuck here and that means the entire school finds out too.

Great, I was getting worried that they would run out of more stuff to make fun of me for.

I heard the curtains rustling behind me a few moments later, my face still buried in my palms.

“I'm so sorry about this dress,” said naturally assuming that the person behind me was an employee coming to help me out of the dress, “I promise that I'll pay for it and–”

I heard the sound of a phone camera flashing behind me, and with dread, I pulled my palms from my face and lifted my head. The reflection of a familiar male towering over me from behind with his phone held up made my heart drop.

I turned around, face bleached of any color and the tears that I had been winning against having the tables turned in their favor.

“Delete it–please!” I begged.

I knew that my luck was rotten, but I had no idea that it was bad.

Because out of all the people that had to find me in this precarious position it just had to be my biggest tormentor.

My adoptive brother.

Dante Valkhor.

Alaric's POV The council faction did not waste time. By the morning after the function, my father had already received two separate inquiries from senior members asking pointed questions about Raven's background and the legitimacy of her standing as a Beta Lord's mate. He called me before I had finished my first coffee and said, "We need to move before they do." "How much time do we have?" I said. "Days," he said. "A week at most before they make it official, and once it is official, it becomes a public record and we lose control of how the information is framed completely." I thanked him and ended the call. I listed the names of council members who were most likely to question the legitimacy of Raven’s claim carefully and started planning the order in which each document would need to be submitted to prevent any challenges. I sat at the desk and thought about everything Raven had shared with me about Maren, Aldric Coas, Dara, the photographs sitting in the envelope in the wardro

Raven's POV We drove back to Thorne territory for the function on a Friday evening and Lord Thorne met us at the estate door. He looked us both over and said, "Good, you're on time," which, from him, was approximately equivalent to a standing ovation. The function was being held at the main council gathering hall in Thorne territory and it was bigger than I expected. Not in terms of the building, which was large enough, but in terms of the people filling it because every significant title holder in every affiliated territory had sent either themselves or a representative. The room had the specific energy of a space full of people who were all quietly measuring each other. I noted several unfamiliar faces quickly as we walked further in. Lord Thorne walked us in. I stayed beside Alaric and watched the room carefully, noting who looked over when we entered and what their expressions did when they saw me specifically. Several people looked at Alaric with recognition and respect and

Raven's POV Her name was Sable. She introduced herself on a Wednesday in the second week by sitting down next to me in the campus library without asking if the seat was taken and saying, "You are Raven Valkhor?" I looked at her and said, "Yes." I adjusted my bag on my shoulder and shifted slightly in my seat before looking back at her. "I know who you are," she said. "My older brother is a Valkhor pack member. He followed the council case closely and told me everything." I waited for what usually came after that kind of opening, which was either judgment or the specific excitement some people got from being near someone whose life had been publicly difficult, and neither arrived. She just looked at me with a straightforward expression that had nothing performative behind it. I did not respond immediately and let the silence sit for a second. "How much is everything?" I said. "Enough," she said. "Dante, the pregnancy, the expulsion order, the ceremony, the poisoned dagger, al

Raven's POV Alaric picked the note up from the floor before I could open it. I let him because he had gone into the careful assessment mode. I had learned that trying to stop him when he was in that mode was more effort than it was worth. He unfolded it and read it, then handed it to me. I read it and it said “Welcome to Elderwick, hope your first day treated you well, there is a good coffee place two streets from the east gate, third building on the left, tell them Sable sent you and they will give you the student discount.” Underneath that was a small drawing of a coffee cup that was not good, but was clearly meant to be cheerful. "It is a welcome note," I said. "Someone slipped it under our door without knocking," Alaric said. "That is how notes work," I said. "I want to know who Sable is," he said. "Alaric," I said. "It is a coffee recommendation." He looked at the note again, then at the door and back at the note with the expression he got when he was trying to talk himse

Raven's POV We packed everything into the car on a Saturday morning. There was more of it than either of us had planned for because packing for a baby meant packing for three people regardless of how efficiently you tried to approach it. By the time the car was loaded, Alaric looked at the back seat and said, "We need a bigger car." "You said we needed bigger bags," I said. "Both," he said. "We need both." The drive to Elderwick took over two hours and Cael slept for most of it. It was a relief because the one time he woke up briefly, he made his feelings about being in the car seat very clear, then went back to sleep as abruptly as he had woken up. Elderwick Elite University sat on the edge of a town that was bigger than anywhere I had lived before. It was not a pack territory with defined borders, but an actual open town with streets going in multiple directions and buildings that had nothing to do with pack hierarchy or council politics. I sat in the passenger seat looking o

Raven's POV I waited four days before reaching out to Dara because I needed those days to figure out what I actually wanted from the conversation before I walked into it. I had learned by now that going into something important without knowing what you wanted from it was how you ended up agreeing to things you had not decided on yet. I wrote the message through Lord Thorne's office the way Alaric suggested, because it gave it the right weight. I made it clear that this was not an impulsive reach out, but something considered and deliberate. I kept it short by writing just my name, a brief acknowledgment that I had spoken with Maren, and a request to meet at a neutral location at a time that suited her. Her response came back within six hours, which told me she had been waiting for it. She suggested a small building in neutral territory two days from then. I confirmed it and told Alaric. He said he would arrange a warrior to be positioned nearby, and I said fine, as long as they

ADRIANA'S POV Marcus grabbed my arm so hard I thought he might break it. The chains around my wrists rattled as he pulled me out of the cell and dragged me down another dark hallway. I tried to keep up, but my legs were still weak from being locked up for days. He didn't answer when I asked wher

RAVEN'S POV I woke up at five in the morning and barely made it to the bathroom before throwing up. This had been happening every day for the past two weeks, and it was getting worse. I stayed on the cold tile floor for a few minutes, waiting to see if there would be more, but my stomach finally
