Raven’s pov

Breeze was just as anxious as I was about meeting my adoptive brother for the first time.

He'd been away even before I awakened my wolf for a quarterly yearly meeting of heirs and heiresses of everyone from high-ranking families to Alpha status.

“How are you even here? You're supposed to be gone for another 2 days!” I whispered heatedly.

He chuckled, “I heard my little piggy was going to have her awakening party, now how heartless would I be if I missed it?”

“I think the best gift you could have given me is if you did miss it,”

He came closer; “little piggy, I wouldn't miss it for the world now shouldn't we be talking about something else?” He said waving his phone screen and my face with my picture brandished over it.

My cheeks flushed again, transforming into two cherries.

“What caption do you think I should use? I think everyone should know how hard you're trying to quite literally fit in,”

Rather than having this conversation I wish that the Earth would open up and swallow me.

“Dante, please just stop…I'll be gone soon, okay? In two years, I'll be off to college, and you'll hardly ever have to see my face again. Can't you at least allow me to enjoy my last years at high school?’

His face suddenly grew stern.

“What do you mean you'll be off to college?”

I'm guessing that was a surprise for him, I never told him anything about myself because I knew he would only take it as ammo to make one of me.

Also, most people in Valkhor didn't head off to college; they usually just went into the family business or settled down.

College was for people who were trying too hard.

But I needed some way to escape this place.

“Yeah, college, don't bother making fun of me. I've already made up my mind and–”

His fingers encircled my wrist, “Maybe you're high right now, but do you still plan on leeching off my parents even after you turn 18?”

“No!” I said, trying to pull away. But his grip was as hard as steel. He was one of the few guys in the pack who could hold me down so effortlessly. “I'm going to get a scholarship and–”

“Ha!” He snorted, “Maybe on the day this little piggy flies because there's no way any school worth its salt will admit you,”

His words stung, even though I knew they were not true; I always managed to rank among the top three students in our class.

But Dante wouldn't be Dante if he didn't make me feel like cr*p.

“That's none of your business just delete the picture and get out of here,”

“And if I don't?” He said daring me, his hold not breaking.

I clenched my teeth.

“Fine, go ahead, post it! Let everyone laugh at me! It wouldn't be the first time, anyway. What have I got to lose?”

His face got serious again and he slowly released me, then he pocketed his phone.

“Yeez, can't you ever take a joke?” He said, falling back to painting me as the crazy, “Why would I even want to post something so gross on my socials? Keep dreaming!”

I took a deep breath, my chest rising up, exchanging words with him like this was pointless.

“Just leave,” I said, turning back to the mirror, but instead he came closer.

“What are you doing?!” I panicked as he held both sides of the dress that had been partially unzipped.

“Helping out,”

With force, he tore the dress, only stopping when my pants showed.

I heard him inhale deeply, probably preparing to roast me again.

I clung to the fabric that was falling off my body.

“Get out!” I screamed, and surprisingly, this time he listened.

Luella came in a few minutes later, apologizing profusely and explaining that it was probably the twins who told him where I was.

“Maybe next time don't invite them when we go out,” I said and she just nodded, saying nothing.

Eventually, I settled for a safe option and a flared black dress with a simple neckline.

I looked like a granny compared to the other girls who wore skinny ties to dresses and tops; nevertheless, I tried to enjoy the party.

As expected everyone gravitated towards my best friend Luella, no surprise there.

She had a smile that sparkled like moonlight, and this appealing energy that drew everyone in.

I already knew this would happen, but I had hoped that one or two people would have the courtesy to at least congratulate me. As it was in every party I found myself in the corner of the room holding a plastic cup and counting down the minutes before this party would hopefully end.

Breeze was fuming inside, she felt we had been used and I was trying to calm her down when I heard someone say to me;

“Congratulations on your awakening,”

Suddenly, all the humiliation I had been enduring since the afternoon washed right off my back when Freddy showed up with a small gift.

A chessboard.

“That’s actually so thoughtful of him,” Breeze admitted

“I actually don't know how to play chess,” I admitted hoping that it wouldn't make me lose points with him.

“Don't worry I can teach you, it's actually much easier than most people think,”

We had soon blended into a natural conversation and I was about to gather the courage to ask for his number when the unthinkable happened.

Overall, it had been a smooth conversation, even Breeze seemed to be warming up to Freddy a little bit.

That was when he showed up.

Like a storm cloud on a sunny day.

“Hey dork, I didn't think you showed up at parties!”

He said, swinging his hand over Freddy's shoulder with so much force it almost knocked him over.

He grinned at me just as Freddy was trying to regain his balance, and I knew then and there that tonight was going to end as a disaster.

Raven's POV I spent the rest of Saturday in my room with the door locked. My phone kept buzzing with texts and calls but I ignored all of them. I didn't want to talk to anyone about what happened at the diner. Instead, I pulled out an old notebook from my desk drawer and opened it to the first blank page. I stared at it for a long time before finally writing the date at the top. "What are you doing?" Breeze asked. "Writing things down," I said. "Everything that's happened, I need to get it out of my head." "That's a good idea," Breeze said. " I started writing. At first, the words came slowly but then they poured out faster than I could keep up with. I wrote about Dante and how he used me, Luella, and her fake friendship, the baby growing inside me, and how scared I was. I wrote about the morning sickness that hit me every day around ten, how my jeans were getting tighter and soon I wouldn't be able to hide the bump anymore, and the weird cravings I got at night for pickles an

Raven's POV Saturday morning, I woke up with the crystal box in my hand. I had barely slept all night thinking about what I was going to say to Dante. "Today is the day," Breeze said. "We're finally going to make him face what he did." "Yeah," I said, getting out of bed. I got dressed in jeans and a hoodie, then tucked the crystal box into my pocket. It felt heavy, like it was weighing me down but I knew that was just in my head. Downstairs, Alpha Marcus and Luna Vera were having breakfast. They looked up when I walked in. "Good morning, Raven," Luna Vera said. "You're up early." "I need to talk to Dante," I said. "Is he home?" Alpha Marcus frowned. "He left about an hour ago, said he was meeting Luella for breakfast." Of course, he would be with her. "Do you know where they went?" I asked. "The diner downtown, I think," Luna Vera said. "Is everything okay?" "It will be," I said, and left before they could ask more questions. I walked to the diner, although it was a twen

Raven's POV The package arrived on Friday afternoon while I was sitting on my porch doing homework. The delivery guy handed me a small box, and I signed for it with shaking hands. "Is that it?" Breeze asked excitedly. "Yeah," I whispered. “This is it.” I texted Alaric as I promised, and he showed up fifteen minutes later looking as nervous as I felt. "You ready?" he asked, sitting down next to me. "I don't know," I said, staring at the box. "What if it doesn't glow?" "Then we'll figure something else out," he said. "But I think it will." I took a deep breath and opened the box. Inside was a small crystal wrapped in velvet cloth, it was about the size of a golf ball and completely clear. The instructions said to hold it in both hands and concentrate on the baby. "Here goes nothing," I said unwrapping the crystal. The moment I touched it, I felt a warm tingle spread through my fingers, and a sudden rush of warmth filled my chest like a quiet promise. Then I closed my eyes and

Raven's POV I woke up Thursday morning feeling like I had been hit by a truck. My whole body ached and my head was pounding. I tried to sit up but the room started spinning. "Maybe we should stay home today," Breeze said worriedly. "I can't," I said forcing myself out of bed. "I have two tutoring sessions after school and I need to finish that custom order for Mrs Chen" "You're going to make yourself sick," Breeze said. "I'm already sick," I said, "but I don't have time to rest. The crystal arrives tomorrow and I need to keep working until then." I got dressed slowly because every movement hurt. When I looked in the mirror I barely recognized myself with dark circles under my eyes, pale skin, and hair that looked like a bird's nest. Downstairs Luna Vera was making breakfast and she took one look at me and frowned. "Raven, are you feeling alright?" she asked. "I'm fine," I said grabbing an apple. "You don't look fine," she said. "Maybe you should stay home today." "I have s

Raven's POV Saturday morning I woke up early and pulled out my laptop. I had been researching the crystal test for weeks, but today I needed to know everything about it. How it worked, where to get it, and most importantly, how much it would cost. I found a website that explained the whole process. The crystal was known as an Alpha Stone, and it had been used for centuries to determine whether a baby carried the Alpha bloodline. When a pregnant woman held the stone, it would glow bright gold if the baby had Alpha blood. If it didn't glow, then the baby was from a regular wolf or human. "This is perfect," Breeze said. "Once we have this, nobody can deny that the baby is Dante's." "If we can afford it," I said, scrolling down to the price section. My heart sank when I saw the number. Three thousand dollars, for a small crystal that would prove my baby's paternity. I checked my savings account on my phone. I had exactly eight hundred and twenty-three dollars saved up, which meant

Raven's POV By Wednesday morning, everyone was talking about me again. I heard the whispers the moment I walked into school. "Did you hear about Raven?" "I heard she's been sleeping around." "That's why she doesn't know who the father is." I kept my head down and went to my locker. When I opened it, a note fell out. I picked it up and read it. "Slut. We all know what you did, leave before we make you leave." My hands shook while Breeze growled inside me. "Who wrote this?" she demanded. "Could be anyone," I said, crumpling the note and shoving it in my pocket. In the first period, I sat in my usual seat, but I couldn't focus. My mind kept circling the note and who might have written such cruel words. At lunch, I went to the library again, but even there I wasn’t safe. A group of girls whispered at a nearby table. "She's so pathetic," one said. “Acting like she's some victim when she's just a homewrecker." "Homewrecker?" I thought. "They're making things up," Breeze sai
