“Where is she coming from? You didn’t sleep at home?” my mother-in-law’s shrill voice pierced through the living room the second I stepped inside. “I always knew you were a slut, but my son refused to see it.”

I slowly lifted my eyes to look at her.

Edward’s mother had never liked me.

No....that wasn’t true.

She hated me.

From the very first day Edward introduced me as his wife, she treated me like dirt beneath her designer heels. Nothing I did was ever enough. Not the expensive gifts. Not the respect. Not the effort. Not the years I spent trying to become the perfect daughter-in-law for a family that never wanted me.

Oddly enough, this was the gentlest she had ever spoken to me.

“Help me serve the guests in the guest room,” she ordered coldly.

“No, thank you,” I replied softly.

Then I walked past her.

For once, I was done.

Done begging for acceptance.

Done shrinking myself.

Done bleeding just to keep everyone comfortable.

I was Roselyn Evan and now i know that I'm from the Rue family

Daughter of the legendary Rue family.

And I had humiliated myself for this family long enough.

Behind me, Edward’s mother began screaming insults, but I didn’t stop walking. Not even once.

What were the maids for?

Why did I always have to lower myself and play servant in a house that had never truly been mine?

No.

Not “never truly.”

It was never mine at all.

I entered the bedroom and mechanically prepared for work. Maybe drowning myself in meetings and contracts would silence the chaos in my head.

I had already decided.

I would finish the final business deals tied to Edward’s company as a farewell gift to the man I had foolishly loved for years.

After that…

I was done.

Completely done.

I grabbed my bag and walked downstairs.

The moment I stepped into the living room, my feet stopped moving.

Jessica Sower

Edward’s assistant.

She sat comfortably on the couch beside his mother while the older woman fed her fruit with a smile so warm it made my chest ache.

Jessica rested a possessive hand on her stomach, glowing happily.

And suddenly, I recognized her voice.

The woman from Room 717.

The woman moaning beneath my husband last night.

My fingers tightened around my handbag.

Breathe, Roselyn.

Just breathe.

I turned toward the door, intending to leave before I shattered completely.

“This barren woman doesn’t even deserve to look at you,” Edward’s mother spat behind me.

The words hit harder than they should have.

Barren.

Like my worth as a woman existed only inside my womb and the funny thing was, how could I get pregnant when her son never touched me?

Slowly, I turned around.

And that was when I saw Edward descending the stairs.

God.

He looked beautiful.

A perfectly tailored three-piece suit hugged his broad frame, every step graceful, confident, powerful.

Once upon a time, one look at him would’ve made my heart race.

Now it only hurt.

His eyes landed on me, and for a brief second, something flickered across his face.

Guilt.

Pity.

The pity almost killed me.

Those eyes were one of the reasons I fell in love with him. Whenever he looked at me, I used to feel safe.

Protected.

Chosen.

But now?

Now I realized he had been the one pushing me into the fire all along.

“Roselyn,” he said quietly. “We need to talk.”

Every instinct screamed at me to leave.

Run.

Because whatever came next would destroy whatever little remained of me.

But I still walked toward them anyway.

Like a fool walking willingly toward her execution.

I sat on the couch farthest from them, my back straight despite the storm raging inside me.

“Roselyn,” Edward began carefully, “I know I have no right to ask this of you, but I don’t have another option.”

A cold feeling settled in my stomach.

“Since most people don’t know we’re married…” he continued, unable to fully meet my eyes, “I was thinking maybe we could separate publicly. Not divorce,” he added quickly, “just… let the world see Jessica as my wife.”

For a second, I genuinely thought I had misheard him.

“What?” My voice cracked. “What did you just say?”

Jessica lowered her eyes shyly and placed a hand over her stomach.

Edward inhaled deeply.

“She’s pregnant with my child, Roselyn. I can’t let my son be born illegitimate. You understand, right?”

“Understand?” I whispered.

Before I could speak again, his mother scoffed loudly.

“She should be grateful you’re not divorcing her entirely,” she snapped. “A barren woman like her should know her place.”

And suddenly—

I laughed.

Not a soft laugh.

Not a graceful one.

A broken one.

The kind of laugh people make right before they lose their minds.

This had to be a joke.

A cruel, twisted joke.

“How long?” I asked quietly after a moment.

Silence.

“How long have the two of you been together?”

Jessica hesitated before answering softly,

“Three years.”

Edward immediately shot her a warning glance, but it was too late.

Three years.

I stared at them blankly.

“One… two… three years?” I repeated slowly, counting on my fingers like my brain refused to process it. “And where exactly was I in this beautiful love story?”

My smile trembled.

“Oh.” I nodded slowly. “I was the mistress, wasn’t I?”

“Why are you acting like this is the end of the world?” Edward’s mother barked angrily. “You were the other woman from the beginning! Stop acting like you’ve been wronged.”

“Shut up, Mom!” Edward suddenly roared.

The entire room fell silent.

But honestly?

It didn’t matter anymore.

Nothing mattered anymore.

I looked at Edward quietly.

The man I loved.

The man I defended.

The man I built my life around.

A stranger wearing the face of my husband.

“Okay,” I said softly.

Edward blinked.

“You can make her your public wife.”

Relief instantly flooded his face.

“I knew you’d understand,” he said with a smile. “Roselyn, you’re truly....”

God-sent.

That was what he wanted to say.

Funny.

Because at that moment, he looked less like a man and more like the devil himself.

Forever, This Time...Three Months LaterThe Smith mansion had never been this noisy. Not because of business meetings. Not because of family gatherings. Not because of corporate events.Because of one tiny baby girl.Liam stood in the nursery holding his daughter while she stared at him with wide, curious eyes."You know," he said seriously, "your mother is unreasonable."The baby blinked.Clearly listening."She says I can't buy you a pony."The baby made a small sound.Liam nodded."Exactly."The nursery door opened.Judith walked in."Who are you conspiring with?"Liam immediately looked innocent."Nobody."Their daughter chose that exact moment to squeal.Judith crossed her arms."She's definitely your daughter.""Because she's adorable?""Because she's helping you lie."Liam grinned.Three months into parenthood, he was still ridiculously obsessed with their daughter. Not that Judith was any better. The only difference was that she pretended to be rational.Liam didn't bother pr

Welcome to the World.....By four o'clock in the morning, Judith had officially decided that childbirth was a terrible idea.A truly terrible idea. The fact that it was too late to change her mind only made things worse."Liam."He immediately looked up from beside the hospital bed."Yeah?""This is your fault."Liam blinked. The nurse laughed. The doctor laughed.Even Judith looked like she knew the accusation made no sense.Unfortunately for Liam, logic wasn't particularly useful at that moment."I'm sorry.""You should be."Another contraction hit before she could continue.Judith grabbed his hand so hard he was fairly certain she was testing the limits of human bone strength. When it finally passed, she released him and took a slow breath.Liam looked at his hand. Then at her. Then back at his hand."I think that's the third time you've almost broken my fingers.""You'll survive."The nurse nodded."You'll definitely survive."Liam was beginning to suspect nobody in the room respe

The Worst Day to Go Into Labor...Judith was thirty-six weeks pregnant when she decided she was perfectly capable of attending a board meeting.Everyone else disagreed.Especially Liam."You're not going."Judith looked up from her breakfast."Watch me."Liam sighed. They were sitting in the dining room of the Lux estate, where he had somehow become a permanent fixture. At this point, nobody questioned it anymore.Even Julian had stopped complaining.Mostly."You were in the hospital three weeks ago.""I was fine.""The doctor said rest.""The doctor also said I could move around.""Not for twelve-hour meetings."Judith ignored him and continued eating.Across the table, Eleanor quietly moved her chair farther away.Richard did the same.Years of marriage had taught them when an argument was about to happen. And when survival required distance."I'll only be there for a few hours."Liam gave her a look. The kind that clearly said he didn't believe a word she was saying.Unfortunately,

The next few weeks went by surprisingly fast.Judith was now officially forbidden from going to the office unless absolutely necessary, which meant she spent most of her time working from home and complaining about it.Nobody sympathized.Especially not Liam."I'm bored."Liam glanced up from his laptop. They were sitting in the library at the Lux estate, both supposedly working."That's unfortunate."Judith narrowed her eyes."You don't care.""I care deeply.""You don't sound like it."Liam smiled without looking up."I've heard this exact complaint seventeen times this week.""You're exaggerating.""It was nineteen."Judith grabbed a cushion and threw it at him.Unfortunately, she missed.Liam looked far too pleased with himself. Before she could launch a second attack, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. Her mother.Immediately suspicious."Hello?""Don't make plans for Saturday."Judith frowned."What plans?""You don't need to know."That was never a good sign."Mom.""Sa

Getting back together was surprisingly anticlimactic. There were no headlines. No dramatic announcements. No grand gestures. One day Judith and Liam were divorced people trying to co-parent, and the next they were somehow acting like a married couple again. The only difference was that this time they actually talked to each other.A lot.Three days after their conversation in the garden, Judith was sitting in the living room when Ava stormed into the house."Is it true?"Judith didn't even look up from her book."Good afternoon, Ava.""It's true."Judith sighed."Who told you?""Liam."That made her look up."He told you?"Ava looked deeply offended."Do you know how long I've been waiting for this?"Before Judith could respond, Ava threw herself onto the couch."I deserve compensation.""For what?""For emotional damages.""You weren't emotionally damaged.""I absolutely was."Judith laughed. For the first time in a long while, the future didn't feel complicated. It felt normal. And

The Answer....Judith barely slept that night. Not because she didn't know what she wanted. The problem was that she did.For years, she had imagined Liam standing in front of her and telling her he loved her. She had imagined him fighting for her, choosing her, seeing her.Now that it had happened, she couldn't stop thinking about everything that came with it.Love wasn't the issue.Trust was.Liam had spent months proving he had changed, but part of her still remembered the woman who used to sit alone at dinner while her husband worked late. The woman who waited for calls that never came. The woman who convinced herself that being lonely was normal.By the time the sun rose, Judith was still awake. And exhausted.Around eight o'clock, there was a knock on her bedroom door. Before she could answer, Ava walked in carrying coffee and a bag of pastries."You look terrible.""Good morning to you too."Ava sat down on the bed."You didn't sleep."Judith groaned."Is it that obvious?""You

Liam didn't sleep, he couldn't sleep. He sat in his study until nearly dawn, a glass of untouched whiskey on the table beside him.The city lights outside gradually disappeared as morning arrived, but his thoughts remained exactly where they had been for the past twelve hours.Judith was pregnant.

The following week, that was on Thursday, Judith had her prenatal checkup. She hated hospitals and it wasn't because she was afraid of them but because they were boring, very boring and most things she didn't understand.Unfortunately, nobody seemed to care about her opinion.Especially not Julian.
