Chapter 58

Alice….

I stood in the cold clearing, waiting for Damian to return. He was gone for almost half an hour.

I could feel the cold consuming me; it was chilly, and the echo of the wind sent goosebumps to my skin like a monster was about to jump out to get us. I wore a maid's uniform, which couldn't cover my body properly. Though I had a veil on, it wasn't enough to keep me warm against the chilling night.

That was the witches zone, and it was always crippy. I raised my face, which was bent down, to be sure the guard who came with us was still there. Somehow, I felt alone.

He was behind me, standing beside the cart, and he stood like this place wasn't having as much effect on him as it was on me. I examined him closely; he had broad shoulders and a scar on his face. He must have fought numerous wars. There was silence except for the crippy cricket and echo of the forest wind.

Damian must have had faith in him to come along with us. I knew the consequences when things went south. It didn't
