The Empty Estate

The transfer estate sat behind a stone wall and a row of dead trees. No lights in the windows. The front gate stood half open like someone wanted us to notice.

Vincent stopped short of the drive. Russo’s team pulled in behind us.

“Too clean,” I said.

“Yes.”

Russo came to the window. “Thermal shows two heat signatures on the ground floor. One upstairs. Gate camera is live.”

Vincent checked his gun. “We do not use the drive. East wall. You stay on my shoulder. No separate climb.”

We did not sleep. We copied nothing. The original book stayed where Vincent had put it, which I still did not ask to see. He took the second handwritten copy in a folio that was not the one we had lost. I took the knife Vance had told me to leave in a car. Alvarez met us at 7:40 on a side street, furious in a clean blouse. “You are using me as a hallway escort,” she said. “I am telling you a cousin was taken from a guarded room after a fire,” I said. “If you want another civilian, she is in an annex at 8:15. If you want me to go alone, say it so I can ignore you faster.” Alvarez looked at Vincent. “If you walk in with a gun I will cuff you in front of a clerk.” Vincent opened his coat. Empty. The gun was in Russo’s car a block away. The look on his face said the emptiness was a borrowed suit. “Book,” Alvarez said. “A copy,” Vincent said. “The original is not a public entrance object.” “If they ask to see ink I will arrest the asking.” We walked. The annex public do

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    The Door That Stuck

“Out,” Russo said again, and this time he put a hand on my jacket and made it an order. We hit the yard air. Russo dragged me sideways behind a steel container as the shed made a sound like a chest coughing. Heat rolled. Paper became weather. I landed on my bad elbow and saw white. Then I saw the shed mouth breathing orange. Men ran. Someone pulled an alarm that had not been tested since a different Don. Russo was on the phone. “Vincent. Shed. Early. They did not wait for Friday. Get off Alvarez.” I could not hear Vincent’s answer. I could see Russo’s face change. “He is coming,” Russo said. “Can you stand?” “I can stand.” I stood. The yard tilted and then decided to be a yard again. Gio appeared from the north gate with two men and a hose that would not matter. “Anyone in it?” “Not unless they wanted to die on a schedule,” I said. The timer had been short. That meant they had watched us open the sticking door. That meant someone on the yard had called the click

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    Chess Tables

The room above the club had two chess boards and a window that looked at a brick wall. The Deacon sat. He did not offer chairs. We took them anyway. “Harvest is not Reid’s baby,” the Deacon said. “Reid is a customer. Julian is a story. Costa was a supplier. I am the part that counts what is left when men like you break the loud pieces.” Vincent kept the gun on his thigh, visible, not raised. “Friday first shift. Say the charge.” “Not a bomb under a crane if that is what your federal friend is sweating. Insurance loves a crane. We are not stupid. It is a walkout plus a fire in a shed that holds records, plus three trucks that will not start. It looks like your new leadership cannot open a morning. That is all a market needs.” “Records shed,” I said. “The one behind bay four.” His eyes warmed a fraction. “You know the yard. Good. Then you know which door sticks.” Vincent leaned forward. “Who pays you if Julian stays in a cell?” “The same men who pay if he walks. That is th

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    The Sock Phone

Alvarez held the sock phone like it might stain her. The screen said HARVEST. No number she trusted. “Answer it,” I said. Alvarez stared at me. “This is evidence.” “It is also a mouth,” Vincent said. “If you want the next pillow to explain itself, put it on speaker and let it talk.” Vance looked at the phone, then at Alvarez. “Your civilian. Your call. If Harvest is Reid, I want the sentence.” Alvarez swore under her breath and answered on speaker. A man’s voice, not Reid, not Julian. Older. Dock dry. “You were supposed to finish the old man and leave the nurse. Report.” Alvarez nodded at me. I spoke. “The old man is breathing. The nurse is breathing. Your man is in a cellar. Try again.” Silence. Then a thin laugh. “The wife. Of course. Put Reid’s boy back on.” “Reid’s boy is tied,” Vincent said. “Who is this?” “A bookkeeper. You have been tearing pages. Pages have owners.” Vance leaned in. “Name.” “No. A time. Thursday morning the remand table will have Ha

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    The Shut Door

Vincent took the left side of the frame. I took the right. The thin scrape came again, then a wet sound, then nothing. Vincent lifted two fingers. I nodded. He opened the door with his shoulder, not his hand. The night nurse was on the floor by the dresser, breathing, a swelling already rising behind her ear. The chair was on its side. Carmine was in the bed. A man in dark clothes had a pillow in both hands and had not finished what he started. Vincent did not talk to him. The man dropped the pillow and went for his belt. I was closer to the belt than Vincent was. I hit the man’s wrist with the knife handle and the thing in his waistband clattered under the bed. He swung at my face with the other hand. I ducked and the swing found the IV pole instead. Bags jumped. Plastic rattled. Vincent had him by the collar and put him into the wall hard enough that a framed saint came down and cracked. “Hands,” Vincent said. The man spat. “Harvest sends regards.” “Harvest can sen

  • The Revenge of the Underboss’s Bride    Moretti Harvest

Carmine looked at the filing printout like it had bitten him. The signature sat under Moretti Harvest, LLC. His name. A date from this afternoon, when he had been in a bed fighting the word ledger. “Not me,” he said, clearer than he had been in days, rage doing the work of therapy. Alvarez stood in the bedroom because midnight had made her a houseguest. Vance stood because the company name had a federal smell. The doctor stood because everyone else was standing and he refused to be the only adult on a chair. Alvarez held a recorder. “Say it again.” “Not my hand,” Carmine said. “Not my company. I do not harvest. I take.” Vincent almost smiled. It did not last. “Who had access to your signature in the last year?” Alvarez asked. Carmine’s eyes cut to Elena in the doorway. Then to the ceiling. Then to me. “SON. Lawyers. Captains. Girl. Not that girl.” He meant Elena, then me, the distinction sloppy and necessary. “SIX. Glasses. Many thieves.” Vance rubbed his face. “More
