ALESSANDRO

For a moment, Lucas's words didn’t make any sense to me.

The armoury was empty.

Not a few missing swords or an unrecorded shipment. Every weapon stored in the southern armoury disappeared, and someone discovered the two guards assigned to it unconscious.

I seized my coat. “Alert the southern patrol. Nobody leaves through the gates without being checked.”

“I've already sent word,” Lucas replied, following me into the corridor.

“Then tell the healers I want those guards examined immedi

LYRAThe scream came from the infirmary.Vera was already running when I reached the courtyard, her sword drawn and her expression grim. Ronan followed, but Mara caught his arm before he could leave her beside the training hall.“Don't let Lyra out of your sight.”I bristled. “I'm standing right here.”“I know,” Mara replied. “And I know you can fight. That doesn't mean I want you facing whatever's inside alone.”Ronan squeezed her hand briefly.“Neither of us is going anywhere without the other.”For once, she didn't argue.Another cry rang out, followed by the crash of breaking glass.Vera stopped outside the infirmary and motioned for us to remain behind her.“Whoever's inside, come out.”A woman's voice answered.“Help me!”I recognised it immediately. It was the voice from Ronan's door.My stomach tightened.“Vera, don't open it.”She glanced back. “Why?”“That isn't necessarily the person speaking.”The door swung inward.A young healer stumbled into the courtyard, one hand pres

ALESSANDROEleven pups. The number repeated itself in my mind as I stared at the illuminated windows of the pack house.Behind those walls were pups who were taught that their Alpha would protect them. Somewhere inside, frightened parents were probably waiting for someone to tell them their sons and daughters were safe. And those holding them had demanded that I come alone.Lucas stood beside me, his sword still drawn.“It's a trap.”“I know.”“Then you're not going in without a plan.”I turned towards the sentry. “Did they give you a time?”“He said you had until the next bell, Alpha.”“How long ago?”“Perhaps ten minutes.”Lucas glanced towards the clock above the courtyard arch.Twenty minutes remained.A she-wolf broke through the gathering crowd, calling her daughter's name. Two warriors tried to calm her, but she pushed past them until she reached me.“My little girl was in the lower hall,” she said. “She's seven. She was waiting for her brother to finish training.”Her hands tr

LYRA“The girl stays. The others may leave.”The voice came from beyond the watch shelter, yet I couldn't tell where its owner stood. It seemed to travel through the stones beneath my feet, deep and rough, carrying a weariness that frightened me almost as much as its command. The silver circle remained around my boots.Ronan moved towards me, but Mara caught his sleeve.“Don't cross it.”“I'm not leaving her here.”“Neither am I,” Mara replied.I looked down at the light. It had followed me when I moved, yet it hadn't burned me. Its edges trembled like moonlight disturbed on water.“Luna, can you hear me?”“Yes.”“Can you move?”A pause.“Not while we're standing inside it.”I swallowed. My wolf had never sounded so helpless.Outside, something enormous shifted among the trees. A branch cracked, followed by the heavy scrape of claws against stone.“Who are you?” I called. The answer came slowly.“Someone who was sleeping.”Mara closed her eyes.Ronan glanced at her. “I take it that's

  • The Rise of the Rejected Luna    CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE – WHAT THE FOREST KEEPS

LYRAThe roar shook the trees around us.I had heard wolves howl before, heard them snarl during training and watched them bare their teeth in warning. This sound belonged to nothing I recognised. It seemed to rise from beneath the earth itself, deep enough to vibrate through my ribs.Mara stood motionless beside the stream, the silver object burning in her blistered hand.“I woke it,” she whispered.Across the water, the woman in the pale dress stumbled backwards. The figures surrounding us stopped advancing. For the first time, they looked frightened.Ronan caught Mara's wrist.“Whatever you've done, we need to leave.”She barely seemed to hear him.“Mara!” I shouted. Her eyes found mine. The light flickered, and she swayed.I caught her before she fell. The silver object slipped from her fingers landing among the stones with a sharp metallic sound. Its glow faded immediately.“Something's moving beneath us,” Luna warned.I felt it then: a faint tremor travelling through the soles o

Several had already shifted, their wolves racing towards the southern boundary, their noses lowered and sniffing the ground.I stopped the patrol captain. “Secure the armoury. Keep everyone else out until we've examined it.”He bowed and ran.Lucas fell into step beside me. “Whoever arranged this knew our routines.”“And had access to my seal.”A forged signature could move crates. It should never

  • The Rise of the Rejected Luna    CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE – THE VOICE AT THE DOOR

LYRA“Open the door, Mara Voss. Or shall I tell the girl what you've been hiding from her?”The stranger's words settled over the room like a threat none of us knew how to answer.I looked at Mara. Her face had gone pale, but she was watching the door rather than me.“Mara,” I whispered, “who is he?”“I don't know his name.”It wasn't the same as saying she knew nothing about him.The dark liquid beneath the door glistened in the firelight. As I stepped backwards, a narrow strand stretched towards my boot.“Lyra, move,” Luna warned.I stumbled away.Ronan snatched a burning log from the hearth and lowered it towards the stain. The liquid recoiled with a hiss, releasing a foul metallic smell.“Well,” he muttered, “that's ruined my floor.”Ordinarily, I would have laughed.Tonight, his attempt at humour only made my throat tighten.Outside, a woman began crying.“Please help me. He's going to kill me.”I looked towards the door. “What if someone really needs us?”Mara caught my hand.“L
