Leaning against the wall with my arms crossed over my chest, I watched Shep work on Nate. He sat on the bed, his eyes closed while Shep applied ointment and bandages. Charles stepped away, feeling smug that he won without having to eat the precooked packet of everything that was artificially available in the country.

“Need I remind you, Beta, these will not heal normally.”

“Yeah, Doc.”

Shep clicked his tongue. “Sometimes I wonder if maybe you are stuck in a loop.”

Nate’s eyes opened, but he didn’t look up at Shep. “It’s not on purpose, at least. Not this time.”

Sighing, Shep moved Nate’s head to the side and started on the last large gash on his shoulder. “Considering the wounds were inflicted well over twenty-four hours ago, all of this could have become infected.”

“They didn’t hurt that bad. I thought I would be fine.”
