*** Solaris POV ***
The bathtub was cool against my back as I leaned against it. I’d been sitting on the floor of the bathroom for at least a couple hours. Every so often wrenching into the toilet. Today was the day I was giving Nate his punishment. I’d woken up early in a cold sweat and whatever strength I had gained back over the last couple of weeks seemed to leave me. Reaching up, I grabbed the cold wet cloth and put it on my head, closing my eyes.
“Sol…”
My eyes peeled open to see Finn crouched down, looking at me with both pity and worry.
“I’ll be fine. Just…I need a minute.”
“I know, sweetheart. I know.” He rubbed my shoulders and I sighed.
Noah leaned against the doorway. “You sure you want to do this, Sol? There are other ways.”
“If I don’t do this, then he’ll take th
My old man wanted it to be a public display but Nate wouldn’t have been able to keep his position, let alone keep my name out of it since I was his mate. The whole pack knew Nate and I were mates and that he was still searching for me. That complicated matters but I used it to my advantage. We would have a collection of people to witness.Silas and Sam would have to be there as leadership. Meredith requested to be there, citing she would be Shep’s assistant as he was going to be there as the medical team. No one else knew who I was so it worked out better. Charles had to be there per the court order and I hoped he would be okay. It was going to be hard to swallow as just a wolf but for a human this wouldn’t be allowed. Noah, Finn, the two Kings Guards and I were all that would be present. I preferred it this way and honestly, I knew part of me may have to use my power to get through this.“Sol.”I looked up and Noah had parked in fr
Reaching into the case, I pulled out the whip. You forget the weight that a whip has until you have it in your hand. I rolled the handle in my hand and sent a wave through the end of it. It wasn’t enough to crack but I was able to get it picked up off the ground.“Alpha, you can get started.” Finn stepped back, out of range like I asked.Turning, I held my chin up, not allowing the tears I felt threatening to came forward to spill. Nate was on his knees, his slightly tanned skin clear of any scars. The potion would stop him from bleeding to death, allowing the full amount of lashes but it didn’t stop the pain. In fact, it was heightened by the fact that he currently was just human.“Let’s get started then.”I wet my lips and tightened my grip on the handle. Meredith, Silas, Sam, Charles and Shep were on my left, far enough away that I didn’t need to worry abou
*** Nate’s POV ***My eyes opened and immediately I regretted it. The searing pain radiated throughout my entire body. The pillow under my head felt like it was making my neck hurt more than it was helping. What the hell happened? I closed my eyes for a second, trying to go over the information of what was missing. It was like a lightening bolt. The pain in my heart hurt worse than anything coming from my back. Goddess, Aelia had to stand through two hundred lashes. Any mate having to do that to another, mated or not, would crumble. Letting a sob escape, I deserved this pain but she didn’t. Aelia didn’t deserve anything she’d come across in her life. The door opened up and I watched Silas and Shep step through. Silas made eye with me and sighed.“How you doing? How’s the pain?”I turned my head. “It’s nothing.”“Nate…”“How’s Solaris?” I used her new name since Shep was here. She never really said who knew and who didn’t.Silas came around, sitting on the stool that I had in front of
The mind link fizzled for a minute before a voice came through. It had been spotty at best since the potion was still wearing off. I couldn’t shift but I could now mind-link and pick up things that weighed more than seventy pounds without grunting.'Beta?''I can hear you. What up, Mark?'I set down the tablet I’d been drawing on for the past forty-five minutes. We were planning a new residential area within the pack territory. It required a rough sketch of the housing layout to see how many homes we could fit without feeling like sardines. As much as we were pack wolves, we still like our space from our neighbors.'I wanted to give you a heads up, there was a rogue running close to our borders a moment ago. Came in from the east side, swung down south and then followed the river. Looks like towards the ponds.'My eyes narrowed. 'Just one?''Yeah. They also looked like they were carrying an instrument on their back, or at least of of those hard-shell rectangular cases.'We’d seen some
“You should head back to your territory, Nate.” Her words weren’t an order, but they held an air of ‘don’t argue with me’.“No.”Funny enough, one of the side effects of the potion was because my wolf side had been locked didn’t, commands didn’t work as well as they would normally. We found that out when Silas tried to order me back to bed and I could not only ignore it but also refuse.“Nate…”“You took one hundred lashes that I wouldn’t have to, didn’t you?”I looked at Aelia but it was Keri who shook her head and answered. “No, you dumb ass. She took one hundred lashes because if she didn’t, you would have had…”A swift glare from Aelia shut her up. “This is none of your business, Nate. Go home.”It was a little more forceful this time but I still ignored it. “Tell me, A! Don’t just
Her head tilted to the side for a moment. “I’m not sure. Bruising is a bigger deal than just bleeding but I’m not sure how bad the repercussions of this will be. Worth it though.” She looked at me, a smile playing on her lips. “Worth it if it means you come out of this ordeal alive.” Shaking my head, I sighed. “You say that like my life means more than yours.” Her chuckle reverberated through the quiet night of the forest. “It always has. Back then andnow.” “How? How can you just devalue your…” “I’m not devaluing anything. Contrary to popular belief, I do actually enjoy living. I’d love to have been able to move forward; have the giant family we talked about. Be an aunt for Noah and Finn one day. Live outside this craziness I got swept up in.” She sighed. “I just don’t have the time or luxury to do so. Back then, I made the decision because I knew Silas needed you more. Now, I make the decision because
*** Solaris POV ***After the lashes, everything started to get worse. I did my best to hide the more major issues I was running into but it was getting harder to do everything normally. The biggest change they knew was that I was sleeping more. They stopped disturbing me and let me sleep in later. Noah had taken oven most of the paperwork now, and I just enjoyed working behind the bar with them.My eyes fluttered open as I heard wrenching coming from the bathroom. Throwing the blanket off me, I got up, wobbling a little but I opened up the bathroom door. Finn was on his knees, bent over the toilet. His eyes met mine but quickly he turned back, throwing up into the toilet.Grabbing a washcloth, I ran it under cold water and rung it out before I placed it on Finns forehead. Gently rubbing his back, I waited until he finally settled back a little. Reaching forward, I flushed the toilet and rinsed the cloth under cold water again. Pulling him back, I
Finn’s arms were wrapped around my middle while his head rested on my shoulder. I rode my motorcycle up into Silas’ territory and headed into the town square. To say we turned heads was an understatement but I didn’t care. I usually turned heads everywhere I went but Finn seemed a little uncomfortable with the attention. Pulling up to Shep’s private office, I turned off the engine. “What are we doing here, Sol?” I looked at him. “Getting you checked out.” His eyes widened and he started to sputter when I grabbed his hand. Pulling him around the corner and into the office, Shep was smiling at us. “Alpha asked if I could see some interesting folks today but you exceeded my expectation.” I chuckled. “Shep, it’s good to see you.” Holding out my hand to shake his, he took it but his other hand covered mine. “How Silas couldn’t see it, I don’t know, but you are the spitting image of your mother.” My eyes widened but I just smiled. “You’re as
