Xavier was released from the hospital a few days after the lashing. Ever since we told him about Stacy's death, his mood has changed. He’s either been locked in his office or holed up in his room. He barely talks to anyone—except me—and even that isn’t often.

I know Xavier blames himself for Stacy’s death. Her last moments and his final words to her seem to haunt him. He may not have truly loved her, but she was still marked as his, and that bond—however small—had existed. Now it’s gone, and it's taken a toll on him.

"Xavier?" I asked softly from the bed. He was sitting at the foot, helping Rosalina sit up to play.

He wasn’t wearing a shirt—it hurt too much to stretch one over his bandaged back—so he walked around bare-chested, his wounds still healing.

"Huh?" he mumbled without looking up. Rosalina smacked his arm playfully as he held her steady.

I crawled toward them, resting at the edge of the bed so I could watch my two favorite people interact.

"Are you still upset?" I asked quie

“Ciao! You must be Anais. I’ve heard so much about you over the years,” Xavier’s grandmother said warmly, smiling as she walked over to hug both Rosalina and me.I hugged her back politely, then took my seat next to Xavier. The moment I sat down, I felt his body stiffen—he was still upset with me.“I need to go speak with the chef. Alonzo, why don’t you come with me, per favore?” she said as she stood up from her seat.Xavier’s grandfather groaned as he slid out of his chair and followed her.“I thought your grandfather’s name was Ryder?” I asked Xavier quietly.“Alonzo Ryder Astor,” he grunted, eyes still staring out the window.“Are you still mad at me?” I asked gently. He didn’t look at me, just shook his head.“I’m not angry... just disappointed, I guess. I thought we were getting better. I thought we were finally moving forward. But it feels like we’re still stuck at the beginning. No matter what I do, no matter how hard I try... I’ll always come second to Daniel. And it kills me

Xavier was unusually quiet during our walk. Normally, he’d take Rosy from me the moment we started moving—but this time, he didn’t.“He hates me,” he said firmly.Honestly, that wasn’t a surprise. Stacy hadn’t told anyone about finding her mate because she wanted to be with Xavier. I knew Trevor must’ve been insanely jealous.“That’s not exactly shocking.”“No, but he started talking about Daniel… and how I failed as a brother,” he growled, his voice low and threatening.I looked up at him in surprise—and pain. That was a low blow from Trevor. Xavier never asked for Stacy to fall for him, just like I never asked for Daniel to die.Xavier suddenly stopped walking and turned to me with an emotion I wasn’t used to seeing in his eyes.Jealousy.“It’s bad enough I only get glimpses of what goes through your mind,” he said tightly, “but knowing that Daniel still lingers in your thoughts drives me insane.”His jaw clenched, and I could feel his frustration burning beneath the surface.“You c

"Why do you think Trevor or Stacy didn’t tell you they were mates?" I asked as we walked up to the door."I don’t know," he replied, placing a gentle kiss on Rosalina’s cheek. "But right now isn’t the time to discuss this."He knocked, and a minute later, a woman opened the door."Victoria?" I asked, surprised.Victoria was two years older than me. When we were younger, we used to occasionally play together with the boys. As she got older, she started hanging out with kids her own age. After that, we just drifted apart. She had golden blonde hair, emerald green eyes, and freckles that spread across her nose. She was always shy and usually stuck close to people she was comfortable with."Hi, Alpha Xavier. Hi, Felicity. And hello there, little baby," she said with a soft smile."Hello, Victoria. Nice to see you again. Is Trevor home? We'd like to check in on him before we head out," Xavier asked kindly.Victoria sighed, her smile faltering. "He hasn’t left the house. Ever since Stacy di

Xavier was strong—he had so much to live for. Even if the whip had been laced with wolfsbane, he was going to make it.I nodded to myself. “He’s going to live.”I walked over to Raven and gently took Rosalina from her arms.“I couldn’t watch… I just couldn’t,” Raven said, her voice tight with emotion.I looked at her face and noticed the wolf scars were beginning to fade.“How are your injuries?” I asked softly. She shrugged. “They’re getting better.”Almost an hour passed, and no one had come out of the room. We all sat there—waiting anxiously, hoping for good news. Finally, the doctor and several nurses emerged and turned to us.“The Alpha is requesting to see his mate… and his Luna,” the doctor said.Stacy immediately stood up, shooting me a glare. As we both entered the room, I noticed the blood had been cleaned. Xavier was lying on his stomach, his torso heavily bandaged.“Oh baby!” Stacy cried dramatically. “The moment I heard what happened, I rushed down here! I was so scared.

Xavier cried out in pain as two pack members lifted him and carried him toward the pack hospital. Blood and sweat dripped onto the floor from the wounds on his back as we made our way through the corridors.A nurse rushed to meet us, directing us to a room.“Place the Alpha on his stomach—this room,” she instructed quickly. The warriors carefully laid Xavier down on the bed. He grunted in pain, tears sliding down his cheeks. I bent over and gently kissed his tears away. His muscles relaxed slightly beneath my touch, but his body remained tense from the agony radiating through him.“I’m sorry, but everyone must leave the room while we treat him,” the nurse announced as she began ushering everyone out.“Wait—wait! She has to stay. She’s his mate,” Chris argued, stepping forward. The nurse paused, then nodded and guided me back inside before closing the door on the others.I sat in a chair opposite Xavier, trying to calm my racing thoughts—but I couldn’t. My heart thundered in my chest.
