“To the public, you are my Luna, but while in this Packhouse, you will be reminded that this union was just one of convenience. You shall abide by my rules with obedience and respect, for our bond is one of necessity, not passion. I want you to keep this in mind till you die. I will never love you, Jennita.”
Those were Alpha Antonio’s words on the night we had just completed our mating ritual. It was cruel and coldly stated, but before I had consented to the union, I knew what I was getting myself into.
At first, a small part of me had been glad when he had asked for my hand, after all, I had loved Antonio right from the moment he sat in front of me in a high school class and we had become friends, but a greater part of me knew I was nothing more of a substitute for his real mate, his first love, Alessandra.
She had traveled abroad, wanting to explore the world more rather than be shackled with the role of a Luna, leaving Antonio so heartbroken he turned into a cold monster; unfeeling and cruel.
I knew I had the chance to back out, to reject him when he had asked for my hand to be able to ascend his father’s throne, but a naïve part of me hoped he would one day soften up to me. That he would love me.
But that day never came. I had a separate room from his. I was only ever allowed to see him once a week to perform the mating rites so I could bear him and his heir, and whatsoever I wanted to relay to him, I could only tell his Beta.
This went on for five years.
Nothing I did seemed to be working. I cooked his best dishes, did as he pleased, attended meetings with him and contributed, and went for training just to see him, to let him catch even a glance of me. But Antonio didn’t just love me. He hated me.
During the times I was in heat and subjected to an insurmountable amount of pain, not once had he ever been at my side, leaving me to perish.
I was miserable, even more, when some years after our union I hadn’t born him an heir, not even a single news of pregnancy to show I was fertile.
He grew increasingly cold and distant by day, leaving me weeping profusely to the Moon goddess in hopes that she would answer me and provide me with a child. I knew it was the one thing Antonio wanted the most. An heir, a child.
And finally, after five cruel, miserable years of emotional torment and abuse, I was leaving the Pack hospital, with a gleam in my eyes and a genuine smile on my face.
I was pregnant. Three months pregnant.
I couldn’t wait to see the smile return to Antonio’s face when I relayed the news to him. Those cold blue orbs might finally soften when he looked at me.
Maybe… Maybe he’d finally love me. For the sake of our future child.
I was so happy. I quickly stopped at the supermarket to buy some foodstuffs which I’ll need to cook his best meals.
I knew he had gone on a trip and was expected to return home tonight. He had been going on several long trips lately so I had kept up with his schedules.
“Could Her Highness share what seems to make her so happy tonight.” One of the maids curiously asked, prompting the others to join in the query.
After all, they hadn’t seen their Luna smile so happily in years.
I so badly wanted to share the news with them, but I wanted Antonio to be the first.
After I was done laying out the dining table, I was just adding the finishing touches which included scented candles and napkins when I heard the door push open.
The familiar scent of my mate sent my wolf into an excited frenzy. I chuckled.
“Calm down, Tasha. I’m just as excited as you too.”
The maids usually helped him with his things upstairs while I was locked away in my room, but tonight I was feeling bold. With a smile on my face, I rushed down to welcome him, but seeing him walk in, arm-in-arm with a woman, I froze.
But this woman wasn’t just anybody.
“Alessandra.” I breathed out loud, feeling an uneasy dread run through my body.
Her face broke out into a fake smile the moment her eyes met mine. I could see the familiar malice in her cruel-looking brown eyes as she said, “Jenny! Oh, it’s been so long.” She quickly approached me with her arms spread out. “You don’t know how much I missed you Big Sis.”
I was too in shock to hug her back, my gaze moving to Antonio’s which were cold and unfeeling as they stared into mine.
“You’re not supposed to be here.” Was all he said as he reached out, and in one swift move, had Alessandra in his arms again.
“I’m not supposed to be here? What is she doing here?” I beckon to her.
“I don’t have to explain anything to you,” his voice was cold as the dark, gloomy night, and his eyes bore resentment. “Go back to your room.”
“Dear, I think it’s time we finally tell her. After all, since I would be your new Luna, she’s bound to find out.”
My body, trembling to hold back my tears from his words almost broke down when she finally dropped the bombshell.
Luna? He wanted to make her his Luna? But that was not possible, the elder council would not even allow it! He chose me! He was mated to me, not her!
“Jenny, we wanted to tell you, but I reckoned I’d just tell you everything once I finally moved in.” She finally approached me, taking my hands in hers.
Her eyes didn’t belong to someone who was remorseful or pitying. There was only malice and hate. There had always been a silent rival between us sisters, and things like that were never bound to change.
Just like Antonio’s hate for me.
“I came back from Britain some months ago, and Antonio rented an apartment for me at first, but after a while, he decided I shouldn’t have to stay in hiding anymore and brought me back home.”
I smirked bitterly; one that shielded the bleeding heart in my chest. No wonder he started going on those long ‘business trips’. My mate had been in a long-term love affair. An illegal one at that. While I lived alone and miserable, yearning for his love, all these while, he had been showering Alessandra with them.
I was a fool. I had always been a fool.
To think, to wish, for even a second, he would gaze upon me like he did to her.
I had done nothing to be treated this way by Antonio. But I guess, my only crime was falling in love with my sister’s fated mate, thinking...
I hurriedly blinked my tears away. “Well, it doesn’t matter. I am his Luna. Fated mate or not, you can’t just walk in after years of abandoning him to claim something you ran away from!” I pull my hands from her grip, glaring hatefully at her.
“Jennita!” His powerful voice sweeping across the room, sent my howling wolf crawling back to whimper just as I faced him. His height towered above mine as he glared down at me.
“Remind me when I gave you the power to make such decisions? Remember, you’re just a mere substitute. A useless one at that. You can’t even bear me an heir. Alessandra will be my Luna, and you will remain as my mate, but nothing more than a concubine.”
I gritted my teeth, feeling my throat burn with an acidic taste, my eyes stinging with another fresh wave of tears. My chest heaved as my lips released short, frantic breaths. I was plunged into a state of turmoil, panic, and heartbreak. My hands turned to fists as I fought hard against the aura of his wolf imposing on me. “Antonio, please. Please don’t do this to me. For goddess’s sake, we’ve been together for five years. Did you ever even love me?” I raise my eyes to meet his again.
For a brief second, I felt I had seen the ice in his eyes melt, but suddenly, the glaciers in them returned and he sneered. “Love? That’s asking too much now, isn’t it, Jennita?”
“Jennita, I’m sorry things had to turn out this way but…” Again, Alessandra reached out for my arm, but I flung the arm away.
“Don’t touch me!”
However, to my shock, right before me, she staggered back and fell against the door before sliding to the floor, pain evident on her face as she clutched her stomach, groaning sharply in pain.
I barely even pushed her, but Antonio already had me pinned against the wall across the living room in seconds.
His claws dug hard into my neck, his grip tight, almost choking me to death as he spat. “Don’t you ever lay a hand on her, ever! If anything happens to my child, consider it the end of your life, Jennita. I will have your head served to me on a platter of gold the moment you ever touch her again!”
I cackled, my blood flying onto his shirt from my lips. For a moment, my grip on the arm around my neck loosened. For that moment, I hoped he would kill me then and there.
She had finally given him what he wanted the most. To him, she had given him what I couldn’t give him in 5 years in just a couple of months.
To him, I was just a useless mate.
The Beta’s eldest daughter undeserving of love.
He released me, leaving my pale body to slide down the floor.
Without even casting another glance at me, he rushed to Alessandra’s side.
I watched as he whispered sweet nothings to her, cupping her face, and kissing her, just before he carried her upstairs.
As I lay there, feeling the deep gash around my neck slowly heal, I mourned alongside my wolf, because that night, we knew we had lost our mate forever.
I would rather be estranged from this pack than have to live under this roof as my sister’s subordinate. With a resolved resolution in mind, I took the stairs to my room to pack my things.
I will leave, yes! I can’t stay here any longer! I will find a place where I would raise my child of course, and he would never learn of my child or me. To Antonio, I was dead.
As I passed his chambers, I shut my eyes tight, freezing in my steps when I heard the unmistakable sound of soft moans and heavy breathing.
It wouldn’t take a Shaman to know what they were up to.
Bitterness in my heart, I wiped my tears one last time before I headed to my room to pack. I didn’t have much so I was done in a couple of seconds. I didn’t have to say farewell, it’s not like they would care. They were too busy fucking each other.
Just as I was about to leave, I pulled off my ring, and dropped it on my bed, hoping he’d be able to see it.
With a heavy heart, I left the pack without turning back.
Jennita’s pov“Jennita, no one saw us.” Antonio sighed for the nth time as he swerved to the right, beating the traffic, while narrowly almost taking the life of a by-passer who audibly cursed at us. “No? What happens when Jamal discovers you took me to Dark Riser’s pack? He doesn’t know now. But he’s bound to find out. Did you think of that before dragging me along like some stuffed doll? I swear, Antonio...”“It was an emergency. Brenda needed you urgently, and I offered to help.” There was the snarky smirk on his face, as usual, looking unbothered about the situation as he increased his pace. I had no words. I could only sit back and buckle my seatbelt while hoping Brenda was still okay until we arrived. I would be grateful for Antonio’s help, but the only emotion he deserved from me was raw, burning hatred. Not even anger. I wouldn’t let him acknowledge that he had that much effect on me. Silence ensued in the car for a while. Soon, Jamal’s call came in. I bit my lower lip, sta
Jennita's pov “Jen, come on.” I was seated still, frozen in panic from what to do, and as if my situation wasn't worse than it was, Jamal was already up, his hand out for me.My heart thumped as I raised my gaze to meet his, my eyes travelling from his outstretched hand to his face which was now morphed Into worry. “Are you okay?” The genuine concern in the tone of his voice caused my chest to tighten. He so badly wanted us out of here, and seconds ago, I shared the same interest with him too. More than ever, I didn't want to be here either. But knowing Antonio, and the fact that he already has enough dirt on me to ruin what I have going on, I couldn't risk it. I couldn't risk defying him. Unfortunately, he wasn't the type to make empty threats. I steeled my resolve as I got up, grinding my teeth to hold back from revealing my true emotions to Jamal. I had to get rid of Antonio. If he could pull a stunt like this because he could blackmail me, he could do anything in the future-
Jennita's pov Antonio was hereEven before we walked into the restaurant, the sinking feeling settling in my stomach, my nostrils filled with the scent of him, Tasha purring and whimpering- it was a dead give away to his presence. I could be wrong. I ignored the perturbing feelings and kept my expression neutral as we walked in, my eyes betraying my feigned nonchalance by travelling around the place. And there he was. Like a magnet, my gaze was instantly drawn to him, our eyes locking the moment the glass doors shut behind us. He was sitting by the window at the end of the room, looking completely unbothered, a glass of red wine in his hand. His piercing teal colored eyes locked intensely onto mine, and for a second, it was like the whole room went still. For that brief second, his gaze subtly glanced over me, taking note of my neckline before plunging lower to drink in my curves- like he was savoring it. Goddess... Those eyes- dark and demanding as they looked now, reminded m
Antonio's pov The crisp scent of my cologne mixed with the faint aroma of fresh paper filled my office. My fingers moved skillfully over the keyboard, my face masked with a neutral expression as I reviewed the quarterly financial report of the company, Black Crest Oil. My frown deepened. I leaned back into my chair, rapping my knuckles on the table. Profits were up, but some investors were getting impatient about our upcoming offshore project. Humans and their neverending greed. The slowly aggravating irritated expression on my face died down instantly the moment my gaze fell on the bead bangle around my wrist. I chuckled, feeling my mood lighten instantly. The colorful small beads unevenly placed around the string was in great contrast to my diamond encrusted wrist watch- but to me, it was the most priceless thing in the world. I remember when Genevieve had come back from school desperate to show me the friendship bracelets she made. I thought it would be the perfect time to f
Jamal's pov (The same morning) With one leg crossed over the other; my left ankle sitting across my right knee, I leaned back in my chair, surveying the buzzing boardroom. My P.A. stands behind me, nervously scribbling down whatever she deems fit to write on her iPad. From where I sit, I can hear her heartbeat pulsating hard and fast. It's the same for everyone in the room, except, as usual, rather than tell me what the fuck is going on, they're all avoiding contact, murmuring discussions I can clearly hear. Humans. I sneer, a glint of crimson red overshadowing my pupils before It disappears just before one of them realizes I was ready for the meeting and signalled everyone to keep silent. My blazer hangs behind my chair which I lean back from, grabbing hold of a pen before leaning back, casually flipping it around my fingers, testing its fluidity and flexibility to keep my brain busy and working. Sometimes it was nerving listening to them jitter so I needed something to distrac
Jennita’s pov “Mommy! Mommy!” Scrunching up my face, I groaned slightly on feeling a dull ache at the back of my head. Suddenly, two bodies land over mine on the bed, snapping me from any sense of drowsiness I felt from waking up earlier. “Janet, move, you're taking up too much space on Mommy!” I hold back a chuckle as I sit up, slowly peeling my eyes open to stare at my cute babies, all dressed in their uniform with their backpack secured behind them. Both were holding onto my waist like I was going to disappear any second. “You, move! I got here first!” Janet stuck out her tongue at him and I rolled my eyes, wincing slightly from another dull ache as I lean against the bed rest, pulling them into my embrace. “Hey hey, it's a school morning. Should you two really be fighting at this hour?” I lean down to nuzzle my nose in their hair, basking in their melodious voice filling the room as they giggled hysterically. “Mommy, I hate the way Elsa does my hair. She never puts in the
Antonio's pov I was never fond of aged whiskey and the scent lingered thick in the office, mingling with the tension amongst us; choking, suffocating silence. Back on my seat, I glared at the Alpha across the table, greedily filling his cup with the drink from the bottle of whiskey. Forming an alliance with him was something I never dwelled on, but depending on how useful he proves to be tonight, I might be tempted to renew my interest. “Let me get this straight, Gregor,” I coldly utter, eyes narrowed with a voice calm but laced with steel. “You’ve had a mole in his pack for how long?”He smirked, downing a cup in go before rewarding me a flash of his teeth that bordered on insolence. I gritted mine, half glaring at Malcolm who stood behind my seat. It was a cue to let him know that at some point, I will not be entertaining a pig in my office any longer. “Long enough to gather what you’ll find very, very much... enlightening,” The gleam in his eyes is annoying. From my side vi
Jamal's pov I didn't want any woman for me other than Jennita. But with her hands still in mine, her eyes filled with unshed tears staring down at me, I forget to breathe, anticipating the words I so desperately wanted to hear. “Oh Jamal. “ Shaking her head, the unshed tears finally spill from her eyes as she sobs uncontrollably, and I wanted nothing more than to have her in my arms right now, crushed in my embrace. “I will…” My thoughts of comfort are suddenly sliced through by exasperation as I tighten my grip around her hand without realizing. “W– what?” She chuckles again, still sobbing as she wiggles her fingers. “Yes Jamal. I'll marry you. Now put the ring on, I want to see if it's a perfect fit.” Holding back the turbulent of emotions overriding each other is difficult, and by the time I push the ring through her finger, there's a pleased smile on my face, my heart is racing faster than ever, and fuck… She was mine. Jennita Bell… soon to be Kingston was m
Jennita's pov Flashback**“Jennita Bell, you will never be loved!” It stung. I've been hurled insults much worse than this all the years of middle school, High school, yet, I couldn't tell why this hurt me so much. Maybe because it was coming from my sister. “Antonio will love me.” Holding back my lower trembling lips, I snap back at her with a much firmer voice. Out in the open of our empty living room space, we stood facing each other. The car waiting to take Alessandra to the airport was waiting outside, and at my words, I watched her grip around the handle of her suitcase tighten. “We both know who was his first choice, don't forget that. You're only a liability to him– a substitute.” I closed my eyes, feeling the tears burn, feeling Tasha itching to shift and run, to run away from her, from hearing any more hurtful words. “Antonio will… “ “Of course, back to Antonio again,” she claps her hands, chuckling with mirth in her eyes. “Obviously you'd think he loves you, he's
