"On three," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the rain cascading down the pillar.

Leo nodded once, his small jaw set with a fierce determination that was far too mature for a five-year-old. He gripped his mother’s hand tight, his small fingers digging into her leather jacket.

"One... two..."

"Elena! Don't do it!" Kaelen’s voice thundered across the asphalt, sharp and unyielding, carrying the weight of an Alpha’s direct command. The air vibrated with raw dominance, sending a shiver of pure instinct down her spine, urging her to stop, to yield, to submit.

She fought the urge with every drop of willpower she possessed.

"Three!"

Elena slammed her boot into the rusted latch of the storm drain grating. The ancient iron gave way with a screech of shearing metal. Without hesitating for a single second, she pulled Leo close to her chest and threw them both sideways into the black pit below.

They fell twelve feet through darkness before crashing into cold, knee-deep runoff water.

The impact jarred Elena’s ankles, but she kept her arms wrapped tightly around Leo, taking the brunt of the splash. Above them, the heavy footfalls of Kaelen’s enforcers echoed against the rim of the street curb, followed by the deep, furious roar of an Alpha whose prey had slipped through his fingers.

"Get down here! Now!" Kaelen’s command rattled the metal frame above.

"Move, Leo, move!" Elena pushed herself up, pulling Leo through the filthy, rushing water of the main storm conduit.

The subterranean tunnel was pitch-black to human eyes, but for Elena and Leo, their wolf sight kicked in instantly. The tunnel expanded in shades of monochromatic grey, curved concrete walls slick with moss, rusty iron pipes running along the ceiling, and a rushing current pulling toward the city’s lower drainage basins.

They ran for ten agonizing minutes, twisting through subterranean intersections, doubling back through dry maintenance shafts to break their scent trail in the flowing water. Elena’s lungs burned, her heart hammering like a frantic drum against her ribs.

He’s here, her mind screamed. He’s in the city.

Five years of agonizing peace had ended in a single midnight encounter. She had known the risk of staying anywhere near the Northern border, but she had assumed the human sector was safe. She had assumed Kaelen was too busy consolidating his power over the Bloodmoon territory to hunt down low-tier rogues personally.

He wasn't hunting rogues, she realized with a sickening lurch in her stomach. He was hunting me.

"Mom," Leo panted, slowing his pace as they reached a high maintenance platform away from the main water line. "My boots are full of water."

Elena dropped to her knees immediately, pulling him into her arms and holding him tight against her chest. She buried her face in his damp hair, breathing in his scent, milk, rain, and the faint, sweet trace of young wolf.

"I'm sorry, baby," she whispered, her hands shaking as she unlaced his small boots and dumped out the water. "I'm so sorry. Are you hurt?"

"No," Leo said softly. He reached out with a small hand, wiping a drop of rain, or perhaps a tear from her cheek. "Was that him? The man out there?"

Elena froze, her eyes locking onto her son’s face. "What do you mean?"

"His voice," Leo murmured, looking down at his own small hands. "When he spoke, it felt like my blood was buzzing. Like when you tell me to sit down, but... bigger."

Elena’s heart squeezed so tightly it felt painful. The blood call. The undeniable, instinctual tether between an Alpha and his natural-born heir. Even through years of suppression herbs and distance, the blood recognized its creator.

"He's just a dangerous man, Leo," Elena lied, her voice cracking slightly as she pulled dry socks from her waterproof backpack and slipped them onto his cold feet. "Someone we have to stay away from. No matter what."

"Does he know about me?" Leo asked softly.

"No," she said fiercely, looking straight into his bright amber eyes. "And he never will. I won't let him take you."

"I'm not leaving you, Mom," Leo said, his young face setting into that terrifyingly familiar stubborness. "I can fight. I hit the guy in the diner real hard."

A tiny, breathless laugh escaped Elena's lips despite the horror of their situation. "I saw, little warrior. You were very brave. But right now, our best weapon is hiding."

She stood up, pulling him back onto his feet. They couldn't stay in the tunnels forever. Kaelen’s trackers were trained for subterranean sweeps; it would only take them an hour to drop tracking hounds or infrared drones into the primary drainage lines.

They needed to surface in Sector 6, the industrial warehouse district across the river where the human scent pollution was heavy enough to smother even an Alpha’s tracking senses.

Elena led Leo up a rusty spiral ladder leading to a heavy manhole cover in an alley behind an abandoned textile mill. She pushed the iron disc up an inch, pausing to scent the cold air.

No pack signatures. No silver-tipped weapons. Just the stale smell of machine oil, wet rust, and smog.

She slid the cover open, lifted Leo out onto the wet asphalt, and scrambled out behind him, replacing the lid silently.

They stepped into the shadows of the industrial alley, keeping close to the brick walls. But as they reached the end of the alleyway leading to the main avenue, a shadow detached itself from the doorway across the street.

Elena pulled her concealable silver blade from her jacket, shifting Leo behind her in a heartbeat. "Step back," she warned, her voice dropping into a guttural growl.

The shadow moved into the pale light of a streetlamp.

It wasn't Kaelen. It wasn't an enforcer.

It was a woman, tall and lean, wearing a heavy tactical jacket with her arms crossed over her chest. Her silver-blonde hair was cut short, and a long scar ran from her left cheek down to her collarbone.

"Lower the knife, Elena," the woman said, her voice dry and tired. "If I wanted to hand you to Kaelen, I would have called his squad five minutes ago."

Elena’s eyes narrowed, recognition striking her like a physical blow. "Vanya?"

Vanya, a former Beta enforcer who had vanished from the Bloodmoon Pack around the same time Elena had fled.

"In the flesh," Vanya said, stepping closer, though keeping her hands visible. Her sharp eyes flicked down to Leo, who was staring at her with cautious, narrowed eyes. Vanya took a sharp breath, her nostrils flaring slightly as she took in the child's scent. "Gods above... it's true."

"Vanya, I swear to you" Elena started, raising her blade higher.

"Put it away," Vanya snapped quietly, looking up and down the empty street. "Kaelen has locked down every bridge out of Sector 4 and 5. He’s deployed the entire Vanguard unit. He isn't searching for a rogue, Elena. He knows you're back. And after tonight... he suspects what you're hiding."

"He doesn't know anything," Elena spat, her knuckle white on the hilt of her knife.

"He’s smart, Elena. He saw the boy's face on the diner's security footage before you smashed the camera," Vanya said, her expression grave. "He saw his eyes."

Elena’s world seemed to tilt on its axis. The diner cameras.

"If you want to live, if you want him to live without being caged in the Bloodmoon Citadel as an Alpha asset, you need to come with me right now," Vanya urged, stepping toward an unmarked black van parked in the shadow of the warehouse. "I have a safehouse past the river control point."

Elena stood frozen in the rain, looking at the former Beta enforcer, then down at her son.

Trust was a luxury she hadn't possessed in five years. But out here, trapped in a locked-down sector with Kaelen’s net closing in around them, she was running out of moves.

"Why are you helping us?" Elena asked, her voice dropping low.

Vanya unlocked the side door of the van, sliding it open to reveal a dark, empty cargo space. She looked back at Elena, her eyes shadowed with old regrets.

"Because five years ago, I helped Kaelen build his kingdom," Vanya said quietly. "And I know exactly what he does to things he thinks belong to him."

The guest suite in the west wing of the Northern Crest Estate was larger than any apartment Elena and Leo had occupied over the past five years. High vaulted ceilings supported heavy timber beams, and a massive stone fireplace dominated the outer wall, throwing off waves of deep, comforting heat. Rain battered relentlessly against the reinforced bay windows overlooking the pine forest below, but inside, the air was warm and quiet.Elena sat on the edge of the oversized bed, her hair still damp, watching Leo sleep.Clad in a pair of soft fleece pajamas that had been left in the suite’s wardrobe, the five-year-old was tucked beneath three layers of down blankets. The steady, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest signaled deep exhaustion. The ordeal on the bridge and the icy plunge into the river had completely drained his small body, but even in sleep, his hand remained wrapped tightly around the corner of Elena’s sleeve.Elena reached down, gently brushing a lock of dark hair away from h

The wind screamed in Elena’s ears as they plunged toward the black waters of the river. She twisted her body mid-air, tightly wrapping her legs and arms around Leo to cushion him from the impact. Below them, the river surged violently, but before they hit the freezing surface, a dark shadow dove off the catwalk above.Kaelen didn't hesitate. Rejecting Protocol 9, his pack, and all tactical logic, he cast himself off the bridge behind them.Elena hit the water hard, the freezing impact knocking the breath from her lungs. The black current dragged them under instantly, tumbling them in the freezing abyss. She fought against the crushing pressure, kicking frantically toward the surface with Leo locked in her arms.A powerful hand gripped her jacket collar, hauling them both upward. They broke the surface, gasping for air amidst the white foam. Kaelen was right there, his amber eyes blazing through the dark water. Without a word, he swam with terrifying, supernatural strength against the

The wind howled through the iron girders of the bridge, driving rain sideways across the narrow catwalk. Water cascaded off the steel beams, but neither Kaelen nor Elena moved.Fifty feet of slippery, wet metal separated them, but the space felt suffocatingly small under the weight of Kaelen’s aura. His gaze shifted slowly from the young boy back to Elena, his amber eyes burning with a mixture of disbelief, betrayal, and raw, possessive fury."Five years, Elena," Kaelen repeated, his voice cutting through the gale like a honed blade. He took a single step forward, his combat boots echoing against the iron grating. "You told me the child didn't survive the winter after you fled. You signed the rogue registry stating you were alone.""I did what I had to do to keep him away from you," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, lethal growl. She shifted her weight, locking her boots onto the catwalk grid to anchor herself as she held her silver blade ready. "You turned your back on me wh

Metal shrieked against metal as the heavy van smashed through the barricade. Sparks rained over the windshield, illuminating the tunnel in blinding flashes of red and orange as the vehicle forced its way through the gap between two armored trucks. In the back, Elena slammed against the side wall, shielding Leo with her entire body as the van violently rocked side to side."Hold on!" Elena shouted over the deafening roar of grinding steel and shattered glass.Outside, gunshot rounds cracked through the cavernous underground space. Silver-jacketed bullets tore through the rear doors, punching jagged holes in the sheet metal. Vanya ducked low over the steering wheel, keeping her foot pinned to the floorboards as the van broke free from the blockade and shot into the open air of the river bridge."Elena! The rear axle is hit!" Vanya yelled over the engine’s dying whine. "We're not making it past the bridge!"Elena scrambled forward, pulling Leo with her into the gap between the front seat

Rain rattled against the metal roof like a barrage of small stones as the engine roared to life, tires spinning against wet pavement before gripping the asphalt and speeding away into the night.Elena kept Leo tucked under her arm, her back pressed against the reinforced wall of the vehicle. In her right hand, she still held the silver-bladed knife, its edge resting lightly against her knee ready for any sign of betrayal.Up front, Vanya glanced into the rearview mirror, her pale grey eyes catching Elena’s guarded stance. "You can put the blade away, Elena. If I wanted to hand you over, I wouldn't be driving you past the Alpha's border patrols.""Forgive me if I don't take your word for it," Elena said, her voice dripping with quiet tension.
