Corin collapsed before Aurora could reach him. Blood spread beneath him, dark against the stone.

“Daren, lock down the inner palace,” Ethan ordered. “Nobody enters or leaves without my permission. Take two warriors and find that man. Alive, by all means.”

Daren nodded and ran.

Ethan caught Aurora by the arm and pulled her into the servants’ room. He shut the door, slid the bolt into place, and positioned himself between her and the entrance. “Stay behind me.”

“Corin’s been stabbed.”

“I know.”

Corin collapsed before Aurora could reach him. Blood spread beneath him, dark against the stone.“Daren, lock down the inner palace,” Ethan ordered. “Nobody enters or leaves without my permission. Take two warriors and find that man. Alive, by all means.”Daren nodded and ran.Ethan caught Aurora by the arm and pulled her into the servants’ room. He shut the door, slid the bolt into place, and positioned himself between her and the entrance. “Stay behind me.”“Corin’s been stabbed.”“I know.”“He was trying to tell us something.”“And we’re going to hear it if he can still speak,” Ethan said. “But first, I need to know whether that man left anyone else behind.”Aurora stared at the blood beneath Corin’s body. Only moments ago, he’d been standing in front of her, frightened but alive. Now his breathing came in shallow, uneven pulls.Ethan crouched beside him and pressed a folded cloth against the wound. “Corin, look at me. Can you hear me?”The guard’s eyelids fluttered.Aurora knelt o

  • The Royal Outcast Alpha’s Mate    THE WRONG GUARD

15/70Ethan’s order sent Daren out of the office at a run. Aurora stood beside the desk, watching Ethan examine the roster again. The transfer had been prepared before its authorization was recorded, and now another guard’s assignment carried a seal the captain denied using.“How many people have been moved without your permission?” she asked.“We don’t know yet.”“And how many of them have been near my room?”Ethan looked up. “That’s what I’m trying to find out.”“Then stop looking at me like I’m going to break if you tell me the truth.”His expression tightened. “I’m not.”“Good. Because I’m tired of being the last person to know when something concerns me.”Before he could answer, Adrian entered and took one look at the papers.“Another problem?”“An unauthorized assignment,” Ethan said. “Corin Vale was moved to the servants’ quarters yesterday. Find out who delivered the order.”Adrian’s humour disappeared. “I’ll handle it.”He left, and Ethan turned back to the roster. Aurora lea

  • The Royal Outcast Alpha’s Mate    BEFORE THE ORDERS

Ethan was waiting at Aurora's door when she stepped into the corridor. He had a file tucked beneath his arm, and the look on his face told her this wasn't another invitation to explore the palace gardens."Are we still having our lesson?" she asked."If you want to.""I'm not the one who keeps disappearing halfway through the day."His eyes lifted to hers. "I've been busy.""I noticed. You arranged for a stranger to be stationed near my bedroom, and you still haven't told me whether I'm supposed to be worried."Ethan's expression hardened. "You're supposed to be careful.""That's not an answer.""No. It isn't."He didn't try to soften it with a smile or promise that everything would be fine. Somehow, that unsettled her more than reassurance would have."Come with me," he said. "We'll talk while we walk."They left the palace through a side entrance and followed a path toward a quiet clearing beyond the private gardens. Two warriors stood guard at the far end, but Ethan had chosen a pl

  • The Royal Outcast Alpha’s Mate    A DAY THAT BELONGED TO HER

Aurora had almost convinced herself Ethan would cancel their plans when Adrian walked into her room carrying a plate of pastries.“Breakfast,” he announced, placing it on the small table beside her window. “Before you ask, no, I didn’t steal them. The kitchen staff gave them to me willingly.”Aurora eyed the plate. “How generous of them.”“They like me.”“They probably feel sorry for you.”Adrian pressed a hand to his chest. “That was unnecessarily cruel. I bring you food, and this is how you repay me?”“Would you prefer I cry?”“I’d prefer gratitude, but I’ll accept tears.”She laughed, reaching for a pastry. Adrian settled into the chair opposite her and helped himself to another.Through the open doorway, Aurora could see a guard waiting in the corridor. Since the discovery of the unauthorized transfer order, Ethan had been quieter than usual. She knew he was investigating the matter, but he hadn’t told her much beyond what she already knew. She had half-expected him to cancel thei

  • The Royal Outcast Alpha’s Mate    THE INNER PALACE

Ethan read the transfer order again, then slipped it into his jacket.Someone had used his authority to place a guard in the part of the palace where Aurora slept. Until he knew who had approved the transfer, he couldn’t be certain who had access to her quarters.Aurora stood beside his desk, one hand resting on the flowerpot she’d brought from the fountain. Its pale petals had opened toward the afternoon light.“Who was supposed to approve this?” she asked.“Me.”“And you didn’t?”“No.”She glanced at the paper disappearing into his jacket. “So someone is pretending to have your permission.”“Someone is using my authority. That’s worse.”The smile faded from her face. “Am I in danger?”“I don’t know yet.” Ethan reached for the bell on his desk. “But I’ll find out who’s behind it.”He summoned a guard and instructed him to have the captain verify every transfer into the inner palace over the past week. The inquiry was to remain quiet until Ethan knew what they were dealing with. He wo

  • The Royal Outcast Alpha’s Mate    THE NAME ON THE LIST

Ethan waited until Aurora disappeared around the corridor before unfolding the report again. The missing guard’s name was Garrick Vale. He had served on the eastern watch for six years before vanishing during the first border breach. His disappearance had been recorded, investigated, and eventually added to the list of unresolved cases.Yet two days after Tomas had been locked underground, Garrick’s name had appeared on a fresh patrol assignment. Someone had deliberately resurrected the name of a missing man to authorize a patrol that never existed.“Your Highness?”Ethan looked up. One of the eastern watch captains stood at the end of the corridor.“Who approved this assignment?”The captain examined the paper. “I didn’t, Alpha. My signature isn’t there.”“Whose is it?”“I don’t recognize it.”Ethan folded the report. “Find out who entered the assignment into the records. Quietly.”The captain bowed and left.Ethan turned toward Aurora’s room, intending to check that she had returned
