*Nine Years Ago, Age 12* I hear the loud thud from upstairs immediately. I walk into the house, and I bit my lips in response. He is at it again. Faint sniffs and sob fill my ears, and I swallow the lump in my throat. I walk further into the living room in slow stride in order not to alert him. Mom always tells me to hide if he gets angry and hits her again, or else I will be the next victim. It happened the last time I didn't listen. We both ended up in a pool of our tears, so this time, I won’t let him. I already hid myself inside the kitchen's lower cupboard when I heard loud footsteps coming down the stairs. My heart races, and I clench my school bag handle like my life depends on it. My life does depend on it. No one could tell what he would do in his angry, drunk state. "You better fix it before I get back!" I hear him say, and the shutting of door came after. He is out of the house. My grip loosens, and I crawl my way out of the cupboard and walk straight upstairs to meet mom. When I enter her room, she curls up on the floor, sobbing and shaking. Immediately, her eyes met mine she sits properly with wide eyes, the tears suddenly draining from her face. "You're back?" She asks. "No piano lessons today?" She asks again, and I shake my head. The bruises on her arms and legs are visible, and I stop myself from talking. It always ends in the same circle of me complaining and her telling me we would be fine. "Would he come back?" I ask. "Not today," mom manages a smile. "I'll run a bath for you," I say and walk into the bathroom, trying my best to stop the tears that threaten to stream down my face. I've cried so many times since I was five, and I learned that crying clearly won't change a single thing. Why won't she just divorce him like every sane woman would? My father or not, he is a total monster. *Present* "Tiffany?" Justin shakes me, and I blink. "Huh?" My eyes widen, I feel hot, really hot. Nausea hit me, but I held it back. "You scared me, are you okay? You're sweating profusely," He says, concern evident on his green eyes. "I'm fine," I remove his hands from my shoulder as I stand up from the couch. "What was that noise?" I ask, trying to change the subject. "Definitely Aaron's cupboard falling again," Justin sighs. "We told him to fix that shìt, he never listens," "Ohh, it was so loud," I say, trying to sound neutral, my eyes finding my laptop on the floor. "Oh no no no no," I mutter repeatedly as I bend to pick it up. "Please work, please work..." I say, trying to turn on the laptop. "The screen is gone," Justin states the obvious making me glare at him. "Yeah.... no shit!" I retort. "Sorry about that," he apologizes, and I sigh. "I'm going home," I pick up my bag and my damaged laptop. "I can get you a brand new one," Justin offers. "I don't think you would be able to repair that, and even if you do, it's gonna cost a lot. Since it's partly my fault it's broken, I can get you a new one," He says. "I don't need your help," I tell him and walk towards the door. "You're always so stubborn. It won't kill you to accept a favor," Justin complains behind me. I pause and turn to meet his eyes. "It would infact kill me," I turn around and walk out of the house, slamming the door. As I walk towards my bike, I place my free hand on my chest, trying to steady my racing heart. After all these years, I still get sucked into that world? Guess I should have gone for therapy if it wasn't so damn expensive. I hop on my bike and pause as I stare at Justin's door. I'm glad he didn't push the situation. Why did it have to happen in front of him of all people? "Tiffany, you need to get your shit together," I mutter to myself as ride my bike away. _ "Mason's party was the absolute best, I mean, his parties always slay, but last night was amazing!" Ava rambled beside me. "Didn't you say you wouldn't go without Finn?" I ask, and she fell silent. The kind of thing she does when she knows she's guilty. "I couldn't miss such an awesome party because Finn is sick," Ava defends. "Whatever..." I wave her off. "Oh, and Justin didn't attend the party, which was surprising," she smirks. "I know," I respond, my eyes on my phone. "Ouuuuu, what's going on?" Ava nudge me, and I look at her lazily. "I heard from Aaron that he said his girlfriend was coming over to his place," "Nothing is going on, you know that. He's doing that not to get benched. period, " I reply, and she sighs. "You're no fun," she sneers. Ava is the only one I told about my arrangements with Justin because I know for a fact she wouldn't believe the rumors because she knows me best. Funny enough, when I first told her about it, she asked if I would survive a fake relationship with Justin. She truly knows me best. We turn our heads when a knock comes on our door. Ava rushs to open it, and our neighbor hands a package over to her. "For Tiffany, a delivery guy brought it," she says, and Ava nods. "Thanks," she shuts the door and walks towards me. "What did you order?" "Nothing," I reply, taking the box from her. "A secret admirer?" She squeals, but I roll my eyes as I open the box. A brand new laptop was inside. My eyes widened. "Woah.... this is the latest model. What jackpot did you hit?" Ava exclaim. "Justin," I seeth. For one stupid second, I feel touched. Then I remember I specifically told him I didn't need his help. I'm going to kill him.Justin Tiffany always finds a way to strike where it hurts. “What? I didn’t say anything wrong,” she defends herself. “Being under my father and doing everything he says is never better than ice hockey. You may hate ice hockey, but it’s my life,” I snap at her. She presses her lips together and walks away from me. I don’t go after her. I need to wait for Coach. I want to know what my dad said to him. Grant tells me he saw Bryce talking to Coach, and I need to know what he says to him. I bring out my phone from my pocket to call Coach, but then I see him coming. Yeah... I lied about my phone dying. I just didn't want to talk to anyone, and if I told Tiffany that, she’s definitely not going to like it. “Harris, why are you in front of me?” Coach asks me as he walks towards me before walking 6 me and into the building, I follow behind him. “I heard you spoke to my father,” I start, getting straight to the point. “Oh, yes. He wants you out of the team,” Coach says,
Tiffany. My eyes fling open sharply, my chest rises, and falls rapidly as I blink. My hand goes to my chest, trying to steady my drumming heart.Sweat coats my face and other parts of my body.A nightmare.No... memories.I sit up slowly, my hand still on my chest as I reach for my phone under the pillow.I turn it on to see if it's already 9am."Shit!" I exclaim and hurry out of the bed, bolting to the bathroom.I don't spend up to 20 minutes in the bathroom when I come out to get dressed really fast.I stare at a sleeping Ava, and I smile, I wish I get to sleep in like this.Wearing something comfortable, I put all the necessities in my bag and hurry out of the apartment.I check the time and it is almost 10 am.Mr. Herald is going to kill me._I feel the eyes on me as I walk into the classroom and make my way to my seat.Mr Herald stops talking when I walk in, and I know I am in for a lot today. He will lecture me like his life depends on it.He continues after I've taken my seat,
TiffanyThe man... who I suppose to be Mr. Harris walks up to us and stands in front of Justin, who glares at his father.Well... Mr. Harris doesn't seem particularly pleased to see him either. Now I am curious... what exactly is going on between Justin and his father."Oh, I see you got yourself a girlfriend," Mr. Harris says."Let's go, Tiffany," Justin ignores him and holds my hand, pulling me away."Aren't you going to visit your mother today?" Mr. Harris calls behind us, and Justin halts."None of your business... you never cared anyway," Justin fires and continues walking."Didn't he come to campus just to see you? Leaving him there would be considered rude," I tell him."He didn't come here to see me... he is probably here for coach," Justin replies."Why would he want to meet your coach?" I ask, stopping him and pulling my hand from his grip.Justin runs his hand through his hair and sighs at me while I stare at him, waiting for an answer. "He doesn't want me playing hockey,"
TiffanyI take my seat and still my face. It doesn't matter if he gets hurt. I don't care anyway. My phone pings, and I check it to see a message from Mom."Oh heavens, I forgot to call her," I mutter as I stare at her message. She only wants to know how I am doing in school and asks if I need any help.I never ask Mom for money. I know she's trying her best for both of us, and that's why I work really hard so I don't have to ask her for anything. She has suffered quite enough in this lifetime. She needs to worry about herself more.I assure her I am fine and I don't need any help. The buzzer sounds, signaling the beginning of the next period.I see Justin moving back onto the ice rink. He wasn't that hurt after all.Relief settles in me, but I ignore it and focus on the rest of the game._I stand outside the boys' locker room, waiting for Justin. He insisted I do that to show that I care about him.Justin doesn't come out first,
Tiffany "Justin bought you this?" Ava asks, suprise evident in her eyes. "I specifically told him not to," I reply, letting out a sigh. "Why would he get you a new laptop?" Ava asks again. "Mine fell while I was at his place yesterday, and the screen cracked badly," I explain, and she nods in understanding and then smirks a little. "I didn't know Justin was such a good boyfriend," "Stop it," I reprimand her as I repack the laptop. "I'm sending it back to him," "Huh? No, you won't... you need the laptop, how would you write your article?" Ava frowns. "I would borrow yours... I don't need a favor from Justin," I complain. "Gosh... Tiff.... can you stop already? I will never understand this hatred for Justin, but throwing away a perfectly good laptop because of hate is just plain stupidity. " Ava yells at me. "I would not give you mine if you return this to Justin, I fucking mean it!" She stands up from the bed and walk out of the room. I watch Ava go as I bit my lips. "I'm n
