CHAPTER 2: The Mate Who Should Be My Enemy

By lunchtime, I was entirely convinced Blackthorn Academy was built on a foundation of misery.

The campus was stunning, but the student body operated like a royal court ruled by fear. I had barely poked at the questionable food on my cafeteria tray when a girl with bright golden hair slid into the empty seat across from me without invitation.

“Are you Aria Nightshade?”

I looked up, unimpressed. “Yes.”

“I’m Selene. And you should probably know that half the school is currently taking bets on how long you’ll survive.”

“That’s flattering. I haven't even finished unpacking.”

Selene stared at me for a second, then barked out a nervous laugh. “You really have no clue how this place works, do you?”

“Apparently not.”

She leaned across the table, her eyes wide. “You challenged Kieran Ravencroft in the main corridor this morning. People don't even look at him, Aria. The last girl who rejected his invitation to the winter gala was mysteriously transferred out of the state three days later.”

“That sounds like a legal issue for the administration.”

“I’m being serious!”

“So am I.” I stabbed a fork into my salad. “Does he always behave like a caged animal?”

Selene's smile vanished entirely. She lowered her voice to a nervous whisper. “There’s more. Word is... he went straight to the administration offices this morning to pull your complete student file.”

My fork stopped mid-air. “Why would he care about my file?”

“No idea. But if I were you, I’d pack a bag.”

Before I could answer, the heavy double doors of the cafeteria slammed open.

The entire room went dead silent.

I didn't need to turn around. Every instinct in my body flared to life, screaming a warning. I could feel him. Even from across the massive hall, surrounded by flatterers competing for his attention, his presence washed over me like a physical wave.

My wolf whined deep in my chest.

He’s here.

I pressed my fingernails hard into the wood of the table. I know.

No, Aria. You don't understand...

A sudden shadow fell over my table.

Kieran stood beside me. He had stripped off his uniform jacket, leaving only a tight black shirt that strained against the broad, lethal lines of his shoulders. His dark eyes flicked briefly toward Selene.

Selene scrambled out of her chair so fast she nearly tipped it over. “I I need to go find my friends,” she stammered, fleeing before I could grab her arm.

“Coward,” I muttered under my breath.

Kieran pulled out the chair she had abandoned and sat down, uninvited, closing the distance between us until his clean, heavy scent pine, rain, and raw power flooded my senses.

I kept my gaze fixed straight ahead. “Is there a professional reason you’re ruining my lunch?”

“Yes.”

I waited. When he offered nothing more, I sighed. “You really are conversational kryptonite.”

His eyes darkened, a dangerous, molten heat flashing in the depths of his gaze. “You are remarkably brave for someone who is currently signing her own death warrant.”

“Maybe I’m hoping you'll get bored and go terrorize someone else.”

“That,” he said softly, leaning his weight onto his elbows, “is never going to happen.”

The absolute certainty in his voice made my pulse spike. I forced my attention back to my food, refusing to let him see how badly he was rattling me.

Then, his voice dropped, smooth as silk and heavy as lead.

“You're my mate.”

My fork slipped from my fingers, clattering loudly against the ceramic plate.

For a terrifying second, the world stopped spinning. The noise of the cafeteria melted away into a dull, distant hum. Deep inside me, my wolf didn't panic she surged forward, blooming with a fierce, blinding light, crying out as if she had finally found home after a lifetime in the dark.

No. I told her fiercely. Absolutely not.

I forced my eyes up to meet his. I laughed a brittle, dry sound that lacked all conviction. “You’re insane.”

His expression didn't flicker. It only grew heavier, darker, charging the space between us with an almost unbearable static. “Your scent. The way your blood races the second I come near you. The bond singing underneath your skin.” He leaned closer, invading my space until his breath brushed my cheek. “You’re my fated mate, Aria. And you’ve been running straight toward me since the moment you stepped through those gates.”

Panic clawed at my throat. I forced myself to snap back, “Then reject me!”

The words tore out of me before I could catch them.

The moment they left my lips, the air turned to ice.

The amused smirk vanished entirely from Kieran’s face. His eyes flared pitch-black, and the absolute weight of an Alpha pushed down on the room, making the surrounding air hard to breathe.

“Never,” he hissed, his voice a low, lethal growl that rattled my teeth, “say that to me again.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, but stubborn pride kept me from shrinking back. “You don't own me, Kieran!”

He moved so fast I didn't even see it coming. In a blur of motion, he stood, crowding over the table, his hands gripping the edge inches from my hips, trapping me in my seat. He leaned down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch from my ear, his hot breath branding my skin.

“No,” he whispered, a shiver racing violently down my spine. “I don't own you yet. But someone spent a very long time orchestrating your arrival here... and I’m beginning to realize your coming to Blackthorn was no accident.”

A cold, creeping dread wrapped around my heart. “What are you talking about?”

Before he could answer, a shadow fell over us.

Darius appeared out of nowhere, his face twisted in pure rage. He grabbed the back of Kieran’s shirt and violently wrenched him away from me. “I warned you to stay away!”

Kieran spun around smoothly, entirely unbothered by the attack. He smoothed down his shirt, his lips curling into a wicked, razor-sharp smile. “And I told you, your warnings mean nothing to me.”

Darius’s eyes flared an aggressive, glowing blue.

Kieran’s wolf answered instantly, a low, guttural growl vibrating straight up through the floorboards, shattering plates and sending students scattering in blind panic.

I stood up, shoving myself between them, furious that my life was suddenly being hijacked by ancient pack rivalries. “Enough! Both of you, stop it right now!”

Neither of them heard me.

Darius lunged, shoving a heavy hand against Kieran's chest. Kieran didn't budge an inch. Instead, his eyes locked past my shoulder, fixing dead on my brother with a look of pure, calculated poison.

“You should be worrying a lot more about your sister, Darius, than about me.”

Darius froze mid-motion, his breath catching. “What did you say?”

Kieran’s dark gaze shifted back to me, softening just enough to make my stomach drop into a bottomless pit.

“Ask her,” Kieran murmured, “what really happened the night your parents disappeared.”

The universe stopped.

My parents had vanished twelve years ago. Darius had always protected me with the same rehearsed story that they had perished during a violent border raid, their bodies swept away in the chaos, never to be found. We had lived our entire lives mourning ghosts at an empty grave.

I had begged for answers for years. Darius had always stonewalled me, locking the door on the past.

Now, as I slowly turned to look at my brother, I saw the truth bleeding out across Darius's pale, horrified face.

Guilt.

“Kieran,” Darius choked out, his voice shaking. “Shut your mouth.”

I ignored him, my eyes locked on my brother. The room around us disappeared. “What does he know about our parents, Darius? What does he know?”

Darius lunged for me, his hands outstretched. “Aria, don't listen to him!”

“What does he know?!”

Before Darius could reach me, Kieran’s low, resonant voice cut through the chaos like a blade.

“Your parents didn't die in a border attack, Aria.”

A sudden, violent flash of intuition exploded inside my mind a buried memory, a whispered warning I had never been meant to understand.

They weren't killed by strangers.

And then, my wolf rose up inside my soul, her voice clear, terrified, and absolute.

Aria... run.

Why? I screamed back in my mind.

Her final, devastating answer drained every drop of color from my face.

Because the Alpha you are bound to love... is the very monster our parents died trying to keep us from.

I stood paralyzed, staring up at Kieran as he easily pinned my brother to the ruined floor of the cafeteria.

Kieran lifted his head. Through the wreckage of overturned tables and fleeing students, his dark, impossibly intense eyes found mine one last time.

Slowly, deliberately, his lips parted, and he mouthed two final words across the ruined room:

You’re next.

And then, every single light in Blackthorn Academy died. Pitch-black darkness swallowed us whole.

For several seconds, I couldn't move. Kieran's words kept repeating inside my head.My father believed you would be the death of me.Then came the other revelation. He was talking about the night I was ordered to kill you.I looked down at the silver pendant resting in my palm. My mother's necklace. The exact same necklace I had searched for every day after she disappeared. How had it ended up with Kieran? Why had his father given it to him? And why on earth had he been ordered to kill me?“Explain yourself,” I demanded.Kieran stood near the bedroom door, his expression entirely unreadable. “Your father and mine were involved in something dangerous. Whatever happened between them eventually involved your family.”“That's not an explanation.”“It's the only one I can give you right now.”I laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. “Of course. Another man who knows everything but expects me to accept half-truths.”Darius moved closer, his voice low. “Aria, you need to rest.”I turned sharply tow

CHAPTER FOURWhen I opened my eyes, I was lying in a bed that wasn’t mine.Heavy velvet curtains blocked the windows, a quiet fire crackled in a stone fireplace, and the air smelled faintly of cedar and rain.I sat up too quickly. A sharp, burning ache throbbed behind my eyes.“Easy,” a voice warned softly.Darius sat in a high-backed chair beside the bed. His shirt was torn across the shoulder, and a deep purple bruise mottled his jawline. He looked exhausted, like he’d aged five years in a single night.“Where am I?” I rasped, rubbing my temples.“Blackthorn's medical wing.”I scanned the carved wood and grand fireplace. “Since when does the medical wing look like a private suite?”“The main ward sustained too much damage. They moved you here.”I stared at him. “You expect me to believe that?”He hesitated, then sighed. “No.”At least he wasn't going to insult my intelligence.I threw off the heavy blanket and swung my legs over the side of the mattress. Darius stood up immediately,

The first mistake I made at Blackthorn Academy was looking Kieran Ravencroft in the eyes. The second was refusing to look away.By the time I realized who stood in front of me, his hand was already locked around my wrist. His fingers burned against my skin hard, unyielding, and terrifyingly hot while his ice-cold eyes pinned me to the spot. Every student in the corridor had gone instantly, suffocatingly silent.Nobody moved or breathed. Even the echoing footsteps on the staircase vanished.I didn't care who he was. All I knew was that this arrogant, broad-shouldered stranger had just ruined my first day, sent my books crashing to the polished floor, and looked entirely unapologetic about it.“Let go of me,” I said, my voice cutting through the dead silence. His expression didn't shift a fraction. “Do you have any idea who you're talking to?”I glanced down at the large, possessive hand wrapped around my pulse before dragging my gaze back to his face.
