Chapter 1: The Alpha Who Never Kneels

The first mistake I made at Blackthorn Academy was looking Kieran Ravencroft in the eyes.

The second was refusing to look away.

By the time I realized who stood in front of me, his hand was already locked around my wrist. His fingers burned against my skin hard, unyielding, and terrifyingly hot while his ice-cold eyes pinned me to the spot. Every student in the corridor had gone instantly, suffocatingly silent.

Nobody moved or breathed. Even the echoing footsteps on the staircase vanished.

I didn't care who he was. All I knew was that this arrogant, broad-shouldered stranger had just ruined my first day, sent my books crashing to the polished floor, and looked entirely unapologetic about it.

“Let go of me,” I said, my voice cutting through the dead silence.

His expression didn't shift a fraction. “Do you have any idea who you're talking to?”

I glanced down at the large, possessive hand wrapped around my pulse before dragging my gaze back to his face. He was effortlessly, painfully handsome jet-black hair falling carelessly across a brow carved from ice and arrogance.

“No,” I answered evenly. “But I know you're standing in my way.”

Someone behind me sucked in a sharp breath.

Kieran’s fingers tightened until the bone of my wrist ached. “You have a death wish, little girl?”

I offered him a tight, humorless smile. “And you have a big problem with personal space.”

For one split second, something fractured in his cold exterior.

Surprise.

Then his dark gaze dropped slowly from my eyes to my lips.

The air vanished from my lungs.

A heavy, suffocating silence slammed down over us. And then I felt it. Long before my mind could name it, a violent, electric shockwave tore through my chest. It felt as though an invisible silk thread had been tied around my heart, and someone on the other side had yanked it taut, binding us together in a single, agonizing pull.

Deep inside my mind, my wolf usually dormant, silent, and detached suddenly surged awake, clawing at the walls of my consciousness.

Aria.

Her voice wasn't just urgent. It was trembling and humming with a desperate, ancient hunger.

Something is wrong... he’s ours.

Before I could demand what she meant, Kieran suddenly released my wrist.

I stumbled backward, clutching my books against my chest like a shield. His nostrils flared violently, his chest heaving as if he had just inhaled a scent that completely unraveled his control. For a heartbeat, he looked utterly lost, disoriented by whatever invisible emotions had just snapped into place.

Then, the confusion vanished, swallowed whole by something infinitely darker and more predatory.

“What's your name?” he demanded, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that vibrated straight down my spine.

I lifted my chin. “Why? Are you planning to file a formal complaint?”

His jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. “Your name.”

“Ask nicely.”

The corridor was so quiet I could hear the aggressive, heavy thumping of my own heart. Kieran took one deliberate, stalking step toward me.

I refused to give him the satisfaction of retreating.

Then, a familiar voice sliced through the heavy, magnetic tension.

“Aria!”

My brother shoved his way through the frozen crowd. Darius Nightshade looked furious, his dark eyes flashing between me and the stranger. But beneath the anger, there was something else something raw and deeply unsettling.

Fear.

It was so fleeting I almost missed it.

“Get away from him,” Darius ordered, his voice tight.

I frowned, bewildered. “Who is he?”

Darius didn't answer me. His entire body went rigid as he stared down the stranger.

“Kieran.”

The name fell like a falling executioner's blade across the hallway.

Across the corridor, students immediately dropped their heads, terrified of even glancing in his direction.

Kieran Ravencroft.

Even before arriving at Blackthorn Academy, the legends had reached me. He was the Red Moon Alpha, the most brutal, untouchable force in the school, heir to a pack known for its absolute ruthlessness. They whispered that he had broken a rival Alpha’s jaw in the arena and left him bleeding on the sand without a shred of remorse.

Stories were just stories, though. And I had never been one to bow to a tyrant.

Kieran’s mouth curved into a slow, merciless smirk. “Darius Nightshade. I should have known your little sister would inherit your stubborn manners.”

Darius stepped directly between us, shielding me with his broad frame. “Don't speak to her.”

“Or what?”

The air grew thick, almost liquid with hostility. Darius’s eyes flickered an unnatural, glowing blue his wolf desperate to break the surface.

Kieran didn't even blink. He looked entirely unimpressed, dripping with dangerous confidence. “Careful, Blue Moon,” he murmured, stepping closer still. “You know better than to bare your teeth in my territory.”

“Then keep your hands off my sister.”

An ancient, bitter hatred hummed between them, thick enough to choke on.

I grabbed my brother’s arm, my frustration peaking. “Can someone please explain what is happening? He knocked my books down, grabbed me like I was his property, and acted like I’d committed a crime!”

Darius looked back at me as though I had just set the academy on fire. “You argued with Kieran Ravencroft?”

“Yes! Is he the headmaster's secret son or something?”

A few strangled gasps echoed from the surrounding students.

Kieran let out a sound not a warm laugh, but a low, dark chuckle that scraped against my nerves. “No, little Nightshade. But I can guarantee I'm going to make your life here very, very interesting.”

“I’m sure you’ll find a hobby eventually.”

Darius closed his eyes, inhaling deeply to keep from snapping. He knew that expression it meant my stubbornness was testing every ounce of his patience.

I had spent eighteen years of my life being locked away, managed, and ordered around because of my surname and my brother's status. I had come to Blackthorn to finally breathe on my own. I wasn't about to start trembling now.

Kieran leaned in, his dark gaze locking onto mine with a terrifying, burning intensity. “Enjoy your first day, Aria.”

The casual, intimate way he whispered my name sent a hot shiver down my arms.

I hadn't told him my name.

Before I could challenge him, he turned and walked away. The sea of students immediately parted like water, none of them daring to lift their eyes until he had vanished around the corner.

Darius immediately caught my wrist, his grip bruising. “We’re leaving.”

“Darius, I have a class”

“I don't care.”

He hauled me toward the stairwell, his grip unyielding.

I yanked my arm free, spinning on him with a glare. “Stop treating me like a helpless child!”

He whirled around, his face pale, his chest rising and falling. “You have no idea what you just did.”

“I insulted an arrogant boy! The world will survive.”

“That wasn't just an arrogant boy!” His voice bounced harshly off the stone walls of the stairwell.

I stared at him, stunned. Darius never yelled at me. Even when we were children, he had always protected me with quiet, unshakable calm. But right now, he looked entirely panicked.

“Who is he?” I asked quietly, my voice dropping.

He checked the empty corridor behind us before looking back. “Kieran Ravencroft is lethal. His pack has been at war with ours for generations. You stay away from him, Aria. You don't speak to him, you don't look at him, and you never never go anywhere alone if he's near.”

I crossed my arms defensively. “Why? What is he going to do, give me detention?”

Darius hesitated.

That single heartbeat of hesitation terrified me more than anything else he could have said.

“Promise me,” he commanded, his voice desperate.

I wanted to defy him. I wanted to tell him I was grown. But seeing my brother this broken down shook me to my core.

“Fine,” I muttered. “I'll stay away from him.”

Darius searched my face, clearly reading the defiance still lingering in my eyes. He knew he couldn't trust me.

And he was right.

Because even as I made the promise, my skin still burned where Kieran had touched me. And deep inside my chest, my wolf was quietly, stubbornly humming a single name over and over again

He was talking about the night I was ordered to kill you.I looked down at the silver pendant resting in my palm. My mother's necklace. Whatever happened between them eventually involved your family.”“That's not an explanation.”“It's the only one I can give you right now.”I laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. “Of course. Another man who knows everything but expects me to accept half-truths.”Darius moved closer, his voice low. “Aria, you need to rest.”I turned sharply tow

A sharp, burning ache throbbed behind my eyes.“Easy,” a voice warned softly.Darius sat in a high-backed chair beside the bed. His shirt was torn across the shoulder, and a deep purple bruise mottled his jawline. He looked exhausted, like he’d aged five years in a single night.“Where am I?” I rasped, rubbing my temples.“Blackthorn's medical wing.”I scanned the carved wood and grand fireplace. “Since when does the medical wing look like a private suite?”“The main ward sustained too much damage. They moved you here.”I stared at him. “You expect me to believe that?”He hesitated, then sighed. “No.”At least he wasn't going to insult my intelligence.I threw off the heavy blanket and swung my legs over the side of the mattress. By lunchtime, I was entirely convinced Blackthorn Academy was built on a foundation of misery. The campus was stunning, but the student body operated like a royal court ruled by fear. I had barely poked at the questionable food on my cafeteria tray when a girl with bright golden hair slid into the empty seat across from me without invitation.“Are you Aria Nightshade?”I looked up, unimpressed. “Yes.”“I’m Selene. And you should probably know that half the school is currently taking bets on how long you’ll survive.”“That’s flattering. I haven't even finished unpacking.”Selene stared at me for a second, then barked out a nervous laugh. “You really have no clue how this place works, do you?”“Apparently not.”She leaned across the table, her eyes wide. “You challenged Kieran Ravencroft in the main corridor this morning.
