FIVE YEARS LATER…
Winona’s POV. Winona, quickly run to the door when she heard a knock. It’s Martina or Marti—her son’s babysitter. “Thank God, you’re here, Marti. I need to run to the diner because we have lots of customers today,” she said while fixing her long and jet black, curly hair into a ponytail. She grabbed her old sling bag and kissed her son on the forehead before going out of the door. “Tell Mr. Olivarez to increase your salary or else you will leave him. You are too much for him,” Marti said. She picked up Mason and carried him. “I can’t tell him that because I can’t afford to lose a job right now—now that Mason will go to daycare and your salary. Plus the rent and utility bills,” she answered. “I’m leaving. I will try to come home early to help you with the cleaning job,” she added and closed the door behind her. She walked downstairs and as unlucky as her she bumped into her landlord, Mr. Rodriguez. “Your rent is due yesterday, Winona. I expect you to pay me today,” he stated in his Mexican accent. “Of course, Mr. Rodriguez. I will pay you later, okay?” she faked a smile and went on with her day. Winona wore her checkered pink apron and hairnet before coming out of the kitchen. With a pen in her left and paper in her right hand—she started taking orders from the customers. It’s what happened in her poor miserable life. If she’s not there, she’s working as a cleaner in middle class family’s home. Sometimes, she works as a catering assistant and sometimes she works two jobs in one day just to survive. “Win, table five!” Rico shouted from the kitchen. She went to get the order but she tripped and fell. “What happened?” Rico asked worriedly. He helped her get up and they both look down on her broken pumps. “I thought you threw that away?” he asked. She smiled wryly. “How could I? This is the only decent footwear I have,” “It’s our payday today. You can buy a new one,” he suggested. Winona, shook her head. “Mason is going to daycare tomorrow and I’m going to pay rent later so I won’t be able to buy a new one.” She picked up the French fries and burger and brought it to the customer. She didn’t notice how Rico stared at her. It’s like he’s pitying her but he couldn’t do anything because he also has a family to feed. Until now, he’s wondering who’s the father of her child and why she didn’t ask for his help. Maximus’ POV. MAXIMUS was staring at the broad daylight outside his empire building. The city was more beautiful at night because of the city lights though he won’t be able to see it later because of the business conference he’s attending. The day just started yet he felt really tired. He’s becoming restless this past few days because of the trouble they were facing in one of the biggest land they were trying to acquire. The owner was giving them a hard time. “Maximus, the board was asking for you,” Brent said. He turned to face him. “Tell them I’m busy and that I sent you. I have no time convincing them about something that’s already done,” he stated and sat on his swivel chair. He rested his chin on his hand and look outside. “I’m just wondering how you will persuade Mr. Jones to give us his land? Everyone knows he’s a deceitful bastard,” Brent said. “Maybe he can lie through his teeth but not to me. I know his secret. I know something that no one knows about him…” he smiled at the evil thought that came into his mind. “If that’s the case I will go and tell the board that they have nothing to worry about,” he said and was about to leave when he spoke again. “—Brent,” he called. Brent stopped on his track and face him again. “I want you to come with me in the business conference later. I want you to meet other business men and learn something from them,” he said. “Alright, I appreciate it but I guess I don’t need them because I’m already working with the best businessman I know,” Brent stated. Maximus shook his head. “Yeah, I’m the best, I know that. But I want you to learn about other’s business ventures aside from real estate, finance, and tech.” “If that’s what you want Maximus…” he nodded. Winona’s POV. ALL THE employee of Mikee’s Diner was gathered in front of the counter waiting for their paychecks and Winona was one of them. She made sure she’s in front to be the first to take her salary. Some of them was talking about how much they would get plus the tip from the customers. “How much are you getting today?” Rico asked. “Just enough,” she briefly answered. “Mikee, will cut down my paycheck because of the wasted food from yesterday,” he sighed. Winona scoffed. “W-what? Why would he do that?” Rico didn’t manage to answer because Mikee—the big fat guy just came out of the kitchen. “Mikee…” Winona exclaimed but Rico held her hand to stop her. ‘Stop, please?” he pleaded. But she just ignored him and came closer to the counter. “Why did you cut down Rico’s paycheck? It’s not his fault that your fridge is broken,” she questioned. “He also cut down mine because of the spilled sauce,” “Mine too because of the broken lights in the wash room,” Everyone was clamoring about how Mikee outsmarted them. Winona crossed her arm around her chest and firmly stared at him. Mikee sighed. “How do you expect me to manage this diner? I’m going bankrupt and whatever I do to reduce the expenses I still can’t prevent the bankruptcy,” Suddenly, the employee stopped talking. Some of them relies in this diner. It’s their only bread and butter and if it closes where would they look for a job? But that doesn’t mean Mikee should get it from their salary. “The diner is still standing Mikee. At least give us our salary so we could start looking for a new job,” she replied after a long pause. After the discussion everyone went home. But it’s not the same as another payday. They won’t go home happy because of the sudden news.Winona’s POV“If you don’t mind me asking, why are you here?” Brent’s voice broke the silence. The elevator ride felt endless as we ascended toward the top floor where Maximus’s office was.I glanced at him briefly before fixing my eyes on my own reflection in the elevator doors. “The truth is, I don’t know either. My manager just told me to come,” I answered softly. Now that I was trapped in this small space with Brent, there was no escaping him. It had been a while since we last saw each other. Ever since I asked him to stop courting me, he never came back, never reached out. I’d felt guilty about it, but I knew it was for his own good. And now… I wasn’t sure if he knew about what was going on between me and his boss. Brent was Max’s right hand, privy to every order, every move.“How’s your relationship with Max?” he asked suddenly. That was when I realized—he knew nothing. I tilted my head up, searching his face, and it was clear as day. He was waiting for my answer.I hesitated, t
Winona’s POVI had no idea what went through the hotel manager’s mind when he sent me to Maximus Wallace’s company.I lifted my gaze to the towering building of Wallace Empire Corporation, hesitating between stepping forward or turning back. The manager hadn’t been clear—he didn’t even explain why I needed to be here.Taking a deep breath, I glanced down at my knee-length skirt, then at the fitted pink blouse hugging my frame. At least I looked presentable today, I thought with relief.Despite my doubts, I forced my steps toward the entrance. It was my first time inside, and I felt almost unworthy to set foot on the gleaming marble floor. My lips parted in awe as I took everything in. The place radiated wealth, power, and prestige. Crystal chandeliers sparkled like diamonds, catching the sunlight that streamed through the glass walls. The clicking of my heels only amplified the pounding in my chest as I approached the front desk, where a man and woman stood assisting guests. Above the
Winona’s POV.I woke up by the soft kisses that I felt in my face. I also hear someone giggling near my ear. But apart from it, I felt a strong arm wrapping around my waist and a warm breath on my neck. I slowly opened my eyes and adjusted my sight to the light then I roamed my sight around. I saw Mason on my left.“Good morning, baby,” I greeted and smiled at him.“Daddy’s still sleeping, mommy,” he giggled and pointed on my right.I felt a surge of electricity when I realized who’s hugging me. I slowly turned to look at Maximus who’s still sleeping like a baby. I can smell his manly scent. My face turned red and I gently removed his arm—scared that I might wake him up and he will see our position.“Will you help mommy, baby?” I whispered.Mason laughed and stood up. I thought he will help me but he just jumped on the bed. That’s when I heard Maximus groaned and buried his face in my neck. I froze and I held my breath.“M-Maximus, can you move? I-I can’t breathe…” I lied.“Hm,” he re
Winona’s POV.I don’t know how long I was staring at them. All I know is I can’t take my eyes off them. God knows how I long for this moment to happen. Seeing them cuddling under the blanket made my heart melt.I turned my back on them and went to the kitchen to make some coffee—and to hide the tears that’s about to fall off my eyes. I don’t care if he’s poor or rich. I just want him beside our son to watch him grow up.I almost spilled my coffee when I heard him speak behind me. “He’s already asleep,” he said. He’s standing on the entrance of the kitchen, leaning while crossing his arms across his chest. His only wearing his white long sleeve tucked above his elbow. He seemed a little flashed, maybe because of the poor ventilation in our house. We don’t have aircon and our space is small compared to his mansion.“A-Alright,” I replied briefly and hold the cup with both of my hands. I was waiting for him to speak again but he just stared at me. I felt conscious with how I look. I was
Winona’s POV.I was just staring at him drinking the cheap instant coffee that I gave him. I don’t know if he’s just being polite or he really like its taste. We’ve been sitting in the living room for almost half an hour now and he didn’t utter a word since then.“I bet you didn’t come here just to drink coffee? Can you just tell me what you came here for so you can leave? It’s 1am and I need to rest—”“Live with me,” he cut me off.My mouth gaped open after hearing what he said. Is he drunk or hallucinating? Or I’m the one hallucinating?“A-Are you stoned?” I stuttered and stood up in front of him.He put down the cup on the center table and cleared his throat. “I’m serious. I-I-I…” he paused and buried his face in his palm. I can hear his heavy sigh.“I-I think you should leave,” I stated.“I-I want you to move in with me,” he blurted out and look at me straight in the eye.I scoffed. My knees felt weak and so I sat back down. “A-Are you playing a joke on me? The first time we saw e
Maximus’ POV.I HEARD everything she said from the CCTV that my guy installed in her apartment. I’m still outside the apartment building. There’s nothing I can do there but I can’t leave My mind is telling me to leave but there’s something inside me that does not agree. It’s been a while since I keep surveillance to their every move and I can’t find anything suspicious. I hired a private investigator to dig deep on her past and all they can find is she have an alcoholic mom and a very miserable life. But he can’t see it in her. She’s bubbly and optimistic. Something that he doesn’t possess. He has everything and yet he doesn’t see himself genuinely happy.I watched as she took the kid in the bathtub and they took a bath together. Suddenly I felt hard in between my thighs. She’s not totally naked but she’s sending my body into total havoc. I’m flushed all of a sudden.I shut down the tablet and told the driver to drive home. As soon as the driver stopped the car I stormed out and run t
