CHAPTER ONE
ISABELLA’S POV “Your mother’s condition is getting worse. She's going to need urgent surgery. We’re going to put her on the waitlist for now.” I blinked back the tears in my eyes as the doctor explained to me. “Waitlist? You just said she needs urgent surgery. How can you put her on a waitlist? She needs to be treated now.” I tried to argue with him, my voice slightly cracked. “I'm sorry but there’s nothing we can do. There are people with far worse conditions than hers.” He responded curtly. My chest tightened. “I can’t lose my mother, doctor.” I cried. “I know. You can try out private hospitals. They would be able to give your mother the care she needs right away.” The doctor sounded so nonchalant like we were just another name on a long list of tragedies he dealt with every day. A low breath escaped my lips. “I can’t afford that.” “I'm so sorry about that. Your mother will need to stay in the hospital for a while to make sure she’s stable. She will be discharged later.” I took deep breaths to calm myself down. I thanked the doctor and went to check up on my mother. Tears rolled down my face as I watched her on that bed lying on those white sheets. I wish I had the power to stop whatever pain she was going through. I kissed her on the forehead and left the room. As much as I wanted to be there with her, I had to work. After all, the bills wouldn’t pay themselves. I’d been saving up to get my mum better health care along with bills that also had to be paid. I had to catch the bus really fast to get to work on time. I already got a text from my best friend saying the boss was asking for me. I told her that I would arrive soon. I missed the first bus so I had to wait for the second one. I got on it immediately it arrived. I got off as soon as it stopped and had to run to the building. I went in through the back door and quickly changed into my work clothes. I went into the room and saw that the boss was addressing the rest of the girls. “And where have you been, Isabella?” The boss asked as I was trying to sneak behind them. “I had to see my mother at the hospital. I'm sorry, it won’t happen again.” I bowed my head in respect. “You’ve been late throughout this week. This is your final warning. If you're late one more time, you’ll have to submit your uniform and never return.” He barked. “Yes sir,” I said quietly. “We’re done here. The other girls will fill you in.” He said before leaving the room. I went to meet my best friend. “Close call, girl.” She muttered. “I thought you would be fired. You're lucky.” “Yeah, I am.” “How’s your mum?” She asked. “She needs surgery urgently but she's going to be put on the wait list. I need to take up more shifts and jobs to afford private health care for her.” I muttered. “You’ve got this girl. I’ll help you if you want.” She offered. “You don’t have to. I’ll do this by myself.” I replied, running my hand through my hair. “What was the meeting about?” I asked curiously. “Oh. The boss basically informed us that some important guests would be coming today. We need to be on our best behavior.” “Oh, that’s easy.” I shrugged. We ended our conversation and went out to begin work. I’d been working at this club for over three years. That was when my mother's health deteriorated and I had to stop schooling so I could work and take care of her. We were serving drinks to some of the regular customers when they walked in. We instantly knew it was them. The way my boss rushed to greet them was more than enough confirmation. He ushered them upstairs. He needed someone to serve them and I was the only available one. I thought that he would find someone else because of my track record this week but surprisingly, he called me. I went to the booth where they were sitting. “Good evening, what would you like me to get for you?” I asked. Two men were sitting while about three men stood guard. “A bottle of Hennessy XO, two glasses.” I wasn’t prepared to hear his voice. It took me aback. “Yes, sir,” I said and left. I went to the storage room to get the drink. The boss handed me the keys to the storage room. I got the drink and went to the bartender. “Haven’t seen anyone order this in a long time,” Gabriel said. “I know.” I sighed. “They look expensive.” “Oh, they are. Be careful not to drop anything. It could cost you your job.” He said and handed me the tray. I took extra time going up the stairs. If I dropped the tray, I might as well kill myself. I walked cautiously to their booth and set the tray on the table. “Here you go,” I said. “Open it.” The man ordered me. I nodded softly and opened the bottle. I had to be careful and I took a little bit of time because I hardly opened a drink like this. I smiled a bit when it finally opened. I looked over to him to confirm whether to pour the drinks and he gave me a small nod. When I was done, I headed back downstairs with the tray in my hand. I dropped it back at the bar and headed into the room. My friend and some of the other girls were back there gossiping. “What’s the chatter about?” I asked. “Don't you know who that is?” One of the girls asked. “No, who is he?” They all gasped like I said something criminal. “He's one of the richest men in this city. He has been in the US for a while now and he’s back now. Word has it that he’s part of the mafia.” “Oh,” I murmured. I knew he was rich but I didn’t think he would be that rich. The boss called my friend to serve those men again. A few minutes later, she ran back into the room. “What is it?” I asked. “He’s asking for you.” She breathed. “Me?” Why would he want me specifically to serve him again?CHAPTER SEVENTY-THREEISABELLA’S POVJulius didn't want to leave my side after I told him that Adrian was going to be taking me home instead. He didn’t care when I wanted to leave the party earlier but he suddenly cared when I told him Adrian was going to take me home.I didn’t trust him fully. I tried to ask him about how he got his invitation but he dismissed me. Adrian warned him off me and took me to his car.We sat quietly in the backseat of his car while he gave the driver instructions on where to go. All of the car ride was silent. I could hear his breathing and mine too. It was uncomfortable. After about 30 minutes, we stopped in front of my apartment. “Thanks for bringing me home.” I said.He got out of the car and came around to open my door for me. “You’re welcome. Anytime.”I smiled at him. “I’ll see you later.”I took a few steps to the door.“I’ll walk you up. To make sure you get home safely.” He said behind me before he caught up with me.I nodded and we walked side b
CHAPTER SEVENTY-TWOADRIAN’S POVI thought my mind was playing tricks on me when my eyes moved through the crowd during my speech and I saw Isabella. I shook my head to get rid of my hallucinations and focus on giving my speech. After I got down from the stage I made my way back to my seat. I sat through the video presentation and the pianist’s presentation without thinking about Isabella again. The first part of dinner was served and I caught sight of someone leaving the hall. It looked like Isabella.“I’ll be back.” I said to Sebastian.“Where are you going?” He asked but I didn’t respond. I was already out of my seat and following behind the woman I thought was Isabella. She was getting close to the main doors.“Isabella.” I called out. She stopped in her tracks and turned around. “You’re really here. I thought I was dreaming or something. What are you doing here?”“I was invited.” She answered.“By who?” I asked. I didn’t think Nathaniel would put her on the guest list. I didn’t e
CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONEISABELLA’S POVI didn’t want to agree to attend the event with Julius as his plus one. Especially after he told me he missed our family and wanted us to get back together. I didn’t want to entertain that idea and make him think there was a chance of us getting back together. I found myself agreeing to go because of one person. Adrian. The only reason I agreed to be Julius’ plus one was because of Adrian. I convinced myself I was doing it to spite him but I knew I was doing it for another reason entirely.I dropped Theo off at Vivian’s place after picking him up from school and went back home to start getting ready for the event. I didn’t know what the event was about. I only knew to dress formally. I’d gone shopping for a new dress after I confirmed it with Julius. The event started at 7pm and by 6:20pm, I was ready and waiting for Julius to pick me up. He texted me and said he had arrived at my building. I didn’t want him to waste his time coming up so I rushed d
CHAPTER SEVENTYADRIAN’S POVI’d been gone for almost two weeks to Germany for a work trip. I wouldn’t lie by saying that something wasn’t wrong. I’d been slacking off from work for a few months now. A part of me attributed that to Theo and Isabella coming into my life. I had to pick myself up and do better.Isabella had been discharged from the hospital but I hadn't gotten to see her yet. I was too focused on getting my business back in order. There was also the problem of Dominic and the other guy from Isabella’s story. We didn’t know if Dominic was dead. There had been no trace of him for more than a month. We decided to put him behind us and focus on work. We still had eyes on the lookout for him in case he decided to show up in the city.As soon as we landed in Chicago from Germany, we went straight to the office. We had a meeting with the board of directors. I was running on two hours of sleep and several cups of coffee. After the meeting with the board which ran longer than usu
CHAPTER SIXTY-NINEISABELLA’S POVAfter almost three weeks of being in the hospital, I was finally cleared to go home. My mother and Jess who were supposed to leave weeks before had stayed until I was out of the hospital. They had to leave eventually. “Are you sure you don’t want to come with us?” My mother asked.“No. I’ve made that clear from the very first day you asked.” I answered in annoyance. She sighed. “You have to think reasonably. You’ve been kidnapped twice in your entire life and it’s all because of that man. I get he’s rich and he’s the father of your son but you don't have to be stuck with him. You can leave the child here and come back with us.”“I wasn’t kidnapped. I already told you that. I was attacked in the parking lot of my workplace.” I’d been trying to convince her for the past few weeks that I wasn’t actually kidnapped.“You don’t have to lie to me. I know what actually happened.”“Just drop it, mum. I’m not coming back with you guys.”“This man obviously ca
CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHTISABELLA’S POVIt had been two days since I woke up from my coma. I could barely move but I’d regained my voice, even if I didn’t have the strength to speak. Adrian hadn’t come around since the night he left. I wish he were here. I had a lot of things to say to him that night but I just couldn’t speak. My mother was asking me what happened every second of the day. I told her the version that Adrian told me but she still didn't believe me. She didn’t trust him. She asked me if he had threatened me. She wasn’t a big fan of him since she found out he was the reason I was kidnapped the first time. She had a hard time believing he didn’t have anything to do with it this time either. The only people who had come to see me were my mother, Jess, and Vivian. I hadn’t seen Theo yet and I didn't want to. I didn’t want him to see me looking like this. I hopped on a voice call with him once I could speak though.Jess was taking me on a walk in the garden. And by walk I meant he
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN ADRIAN’S POVThe next morning when I woke up, the first thing I did was check my phone to see if I had gotten a reply from Isabella. I hadn’t. I sighed and walked to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face.I came out of the bathroom with a small towel in hand to dry my f
CHAPTER SIXTEENADRIAN’S POV“Wow. I really thought you forgot about her too. Had no idea you kept in touch with her.” I leaned back in my seat.He shook his head in disappointment. I didn’t know how I’d managed to forget about her. How could I forget that I’d gotten someone pregnant? I wondered ho
CHAPTER FIFTEEN ADRIAN’S POV“Adrian, when are you going to bring me a grandchild? You’re not getting any younger. You need someone to continue the legacy.” My mum nagged at me around the house.“Mother, I don’t have time for this right now. I’ve told you, I'm not interested in bringing a life to
CHAPTER THIRTEENISABELLA’S POVI didn’t even have to explain too much to Jess before she agreed to come. She only heard that I was in the hospital and didn't think twice. Before she arrived, the doctor came in to check up on me.“How are you feeling?” She asked.“A bit tired.” I answered. “Can I g
