تسجيل الدخولCHAPTER TWENTY-ONERHEYESAs the days went by, my life slowly settled into the strangest and most unexpected rhythm. I felt like a man stuck inside a costume I just couldn't take off.I joined Lui for tea every morning in the sitting room, sitting beside her with a cup I wouldn't even drink from, and nodding along to whatever story she was telling about the flower arrangements or the guest list or which cousin from which family was expected to cause the most trouble at the gala. I laughed when she tried to be funny, and I made sure to always reach for her hand whenever I felt there were eyes on us. The most common routine however, was me walking her through the gardens on my arm every afternoon, slow and easy, just like a man who was in love was expected to walk.It was all very exhausting… Every single piece of it. Each polite laugh I gave her tasted like acid on my tongue by the time it left my mouth, and every small touch or smile that I faked almost made me lose my mind. But it wa
CHAPTER TWENTYCALISTAI didn't even remember walking away from the front of the steps. One second I was standing there staring at Rheyes covering Lui's hand with his own, and the next I was already halfway across the lawn, feeling my feet moving on their own and carrying me as far away from that scene as they possibly could. The garden was quiet when I reached it, and the morning sun felt warm against my skin. The roses were still blooming in neat rows along the stone path, and I tried to distract myself by thinking about all the many hours I had spent staring at this exact spot through the closed-off window, dreaming about the day I'd be allowed to stand here again. Now that I finally could, all I wanted to do was cry my eyes out. Was this the reason I was finally let out? Was Lui's plan all along for me to see that Rheyes had forgotten my existence and settled for her? I pressed my hands against my eyes, forcing the tears back and refusing to let them fall. I would not cry over Rhe
CHAPTER NINETEENRHEYESThe man was still gasping in my hold, his hands clutching his stomach where I'd hit him, while blood leaked slowly from his nose.Lui and her father just stood there, still with that same weird expression. They didn't look shocked in any way, and neither of them looked away. It was obvious that they had been standing there long enough to see everything…every punch, and every word I had screamed at the poor man whom I had finally released and was now rolling on the ground.Don Lanchi's eyes moved slowly from the injured man, up to me, then back down again, filled with so much calm and composure as if he had simply been writing something down inside his head from the whole scene that he planned to use later.I gave the man one final kick on the ground, forcing myself to let go of the anger before it gave away anything else about me."Get him cleaned up," I said to one of the guards standing nearby, refusing to look at either Lui or her father directly. "And someo
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN CALISTA The servants had finally been sent to clean my room, three days after the damage was done and I had been left to remain in the mess. The injured guard was fine according to whispers I heard, and I knew he would think twice before thinking about rough handling a woman ever again. I was sitting on the edge of my bed, watching quietly as two servants swept up the last of the glass, while another one straightened the chair and placed it back against the wall like nothing had ever gone wrong here at all. I almost laughed at that. As if sweeping up broken glass could sweep away everything else that had broken along with it. Then the door swung open without any knock, and without any warning at all. "Out!" My mother snapped at the servants, and her voice was so harsh that all three of them scrambled to obey immediately, dropping brooms and clothes where they stood and hurrying past her into the hallway. She pushed the door shut behind them with a loud bang
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN RHEYES I stormed back toward the house, trying to force out the sound of my father's dismissal from my head, but it just kept echoing through my skull like a gunshot that wouldn't stop ringing. "Don Rheyes," Antonio called out, jogging a few steps to catch up with me. "Should we finish going over the warehouse plans? I still have the maps if you want to…" "Not now!" I had snapped so hard and cold at him that Antonio paused in his tracks, but I still didn't wait or even slow down to give him an explanation or soften the blow. I just kept walking, leaving him shocked and confused while I prepared to face my own demons inside the house. Everything inside the house seemed to only irritate me more as I entered, and it was all because those brutal words my father had said just kept coming back to haunt me, each one always more painful than the last. *A wrecked room upstairs. Excuses. Nothing to explain.* I didn't even know where I was walking until I nearly
CHAPTER SIXTEENRHEYES"Father."He was just standing where he had been the entire time, watching the small but obvious hostility between me and Giovanni. For some strange reason however, he acted like he hadn't seen any of it."Rheyes," he said without interest. "Is there a problem?""Yes, there's a problem," I replied, and I knew my tone was aggressive, but I just didn't care. “There was an operation today and you didn't inform me. How am I supposed to be ready to look after things when you retire if you're keeping things like this from me?”The calm and neutral look on his face now vanished, replaced by a cold look of anger. "You want to know why you weren't informed?" he said, glaring at me while his voice kept getting more furious. "Because you've been too damned busy chasing after skirts and locking yourself away with problems that have nothing to do with running this family."It was painful...My father coming out so directly and telling me exactly why he had left me and my men
