Elias’s POV

Something was wrong.

Candace was supposed to be gone by now. I had been waiting for her message for nearly twenty minutes. She was supposed to leave when Jake was distracted, and Bridgette was supposed to help her get out.

Candace had promised she would contact me the moment she was outside, but there had been nothing.

I called her, but the call went straight to voicemail. I tried again and got the same result.

I grabbed my keys.

By the time I reached the house, I was already prepar

Candace’s POVWhen Elias opened his eyes, I was holding his hand. The doctor said His recovery would be slow. Some days, he barely had the strength to speak, while on others, frustration got the better of him because his body refused to move as quickly as he wanted.I learned his medication schedule, which movements caused him pain, and the little signs that told me he was hurting even when he insisted he was fine.He learned that I wasn’t going anywhere. The first time he tried to sit up on his own, I nearly shouted at him. “You were shot, Elias. Stop acting like you’re indestructible.”He gave me a tired smile. “I missed you.”“You saw me yesterday.”“That was too long.”I rolled my eyes, but I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. After everything we had been through, having a normal moment with him felt almost strange.Jake was arrested and eventually began serving his sentence for what he had done. Annalise was arrested too. When I later heard that she had died from complications fo

Candace’s POVThe operating-room doors slammed shut behind Elias, and I stood there staring at them, unable to move. There was blood on my hands. His blood.I looked down at my palms again. They were still shaking. No matter how many times I rubbed them together, I could still feel the warmth of his blood against my skin.I could still feel the weight of him falling into my arms after the shot, the way his body had suddenly become heavy, the way his voice had disappeared when I needed to hear it most.“Candace.”My mother’s voice barely reached me.I looked up. Bridgette stood beside her, both of them watching me with tears in their eyes.“He’s going to be okay,” Bridgette said, though her voice cracked on the last word. “When they took him in, the doctor said they were going to do everything they could. That has to mean something.”I wanted to believe her.I couldn’t.The doors opened briefly as another member of the surgical team rushed inside, and my heart jumped so hard I almost s

Elias’s POVJake kept the weapon raised.Candace stood behind me, close enough that I could feel her trembling. I kept my eyes on Jake, careful not to make any sudden movement while the police shouted from outside the room.“Jake,” Candace said carefully, her voice unsteady but controlled. “Put it down.”His eyes stayed fixed on me. “You ruined everything we had. You ruined my family. You walked away from me, and then you came back and took her too. If you had stayed out of my life, none of this would’ve happened.”“This isn’t about me anymore,” I said.“It has always been about you.”Candace's mother must have been the one to call the police when she didn't pick up her call either, because I could hear her voice from outside. The police shouted again from outside, ordering him to drop the weapon. We were all on full display from the glass wall.Jake flinched at the command, but he didn’t lower it. His attention moved toward the doorway for a moment before settling back on me.Candace

I tried again and got the same result.I grabbed my keys.By the time I reached the house, I was already preparing myself for the worst. I kept telling myself there had to be a reasonable explanation, but the longer she stayed silent, the harder it became to believe one existed. The front door was unlocked.I pushed it open and called her name, but there was no answer even though her bags were by the door. Then I heard Jake’s voice from the hallway.“You’re not leaving me for him.”I stopped.I moved toward the sound and saw Candace standing there with a purse over her shoulder. Jake was between her and

Candace’s POVI had one chance. My bag was already packed and hidden beneath the bed, exactly where my mother had told me to keep it until Jake was distracted enough for me to leave. I had only packed what I needed: a few clothes, my documents, my phone charger, and the things I couldn’t afford to lose.My mother had wanted me to leave immediately after our conversation, and for once, I hadn’t argued. Waiting for the wedding no longer made sense. The longer I stayed, the more opportunities Jake had to notice something was wrong.Bridgette was ready to help me get out, and Elias was waiting for me. The moment I reached him, I knew I wouldn’t have to figure everything out alone anymore. I just had to get through the door.Jake had been downstairs for most of the afternoon, moving between phone calls and wedding arrangements. He had been so focused on making sure everything was perfect that he barely noticed when I left the room.I waited until I heard him talking to someone in the hallw

Candace’s POV“Candace, why does this fit differently?”I stared at my reflection. My mother stood behind me, watching through the mirror. The dress was still half-pinned around my body, but neither of us was looking at it anymore.I swallowed.“I’m pregnant.”Her expression changed immediately. She said nothing. Her eyes moved from my face to my stomach and back again, as though she needed time to understand what I had just told her.“You're what? Pregnant?”I nodded. She took a step back and sat on the edge of the chair beside her. She looked stunned, but she wasn’t angry.“That's good news Candace…if you’re happy.” She added. “How long have you known?”“A while.”“And you were going to tell me when?”“I don’t know.”She looked down before meeting my eyes again. I could almost see her going through everything she had noticed over the past few weeks.“And you still let me believe you were just stressed about the wedding?”“I didn’t know how else to say.”She was quiet for a moment be
