Naomi barely slept.

Her study light remained on through the early hours, casting long, watchful shadows across case files and legal pads. A cold cup of tea sat untouched by her elbow, its warmth long forgotten. She had run every scan she could think of, traced digital fingerprints, compared backups—and still, nothing pointed to the culprit.

Nothing obvious.

At 5:42 a.m., her front gate clicked open.

Naomi was already at the window.

Daniel stood outside the gate, hoodie pulled over his head, hands in his pockets. She hesitated, then buzzed him in. By the time he reached the front porch, she was holding the door open, eyes still rimmed with fatigue.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he said.

“Join the club,” she replied, stepping aside to let him in.

He followed her into the kitchen. She poured two mugs of coffee, black, no sugar—their unspoken agreement from weeks past. For a moment, they just stood there, the silence almost comfortable.

Then Naomi spoke.

It was a bright, sunny day in Los Angeles, but despite the burning sun up above, the cool breeze licked at Naomi’s skin, calming her nerves. She wasn’t sure why, but she liked the warmth it radiated, so much that she stood in her night gown on her lawn, totally pretending that she was on the beach. Her imagination was far gone that she could hear the drifting of the waves, feel her body on the silky sands, and see the- OH NO!!!! Naomi jumped out of her thoughts, suddenly remembering that she had a meeting with a client at 10am. She was conscious of it last night before bed, but the beauty of the morning had caught her mind, hauling it away from what was important. With a sigh of disappointment —in herself— she lumbered through the front door, heading directly for her room. Should she just postpone the meeting? After all, she was already late; she hadn’t yet showered or combed her hair either and her breath was just a second away from killing her. But then again, if she postpone

Naomi suddenly stopped moving the papers and just stared straight into his dark, brown eyes. She really didn’t care about what he had to say, this meeting was solely about his case and she’d like to keep it that way. “Can I meet with you briefly on Friday? I need to discuss the court date if that’s okay with you.” “I’ll adjust my schedule, so that I can have a drink of coffee with you after the meeting.” He smiled cheekily, shuffling to comfort on the office chair. “I’m trying to make up for the chip on your shoulder.” “I’m going to be a bit busy. I have some unfinished papers I need to sort out for a friend of mine after our session, his name is Steve…it so happens that I’ll be meeting with him on Friday” In suddenness, Naomi’s office door opened, Grace peeking inside. “Boss just to inform you that the office will be closed on Friday, so please don’t accept or book any appointments for Friday, okay?” If Naomi could shove her shoe in her secretary’s mouth, she would. “Are you sur

Knowing on a day like this she had to meet with the one person she didn't want to see right now, Naomi twisted, turned and pull the sheets over her head wishing for him to cancel. He wouldn't, she knew, but at least she could hope, right? Slowly, Naomi rolled out of bed and did her regular morning routine; she brushed her teeth, took a shower, combed her hair then searched for the ugliest suit she had in her closet. She drew her curtains, examining the weather outside. As she looked, she noticed that the climate looked as though it was going to rain. Could this be her get away? Could this be God granting her wish? Naomi shook her head, suddenly remembering the hefty amount of money Mr. Ferguson was paying to solve his case. That money would benefit her wallet, her bank account and her cupboards in the kitchen. She couldn't lose him or the case for that matter... Thinking positively at this moment, Noami looked up at her clock, noticing that it was almost time to get ready. Sh

Daniel looked at Naomi, not completely believing what she just said. He turned to the young lady. "I will pay for it no need to worry." Naomi glared over at him, so lost in her anger that she spat out any word that came to the tip of her tongue. "And did I ask you to pay for it? That’s what you do, and not just you but men over all; throw money on women just so you can get inside of their pants." Daniel's neutral face expression changed, his eyes twitching as he drew back his hand with the thumb drive. "You know what? I will drop this off another time because my appetite is now ruining …" He picked up his bag, walking through the exit without saying another word to Naomi. Naomi shoved her cup of coffee aside and pushed her chair back in order to get out of it. Towards the door she then stomped, bumping right back into Daniel. "Sorry." She grumbled out, stepping out of his way. Daniel let out a breath of irritation. “The pessimist...? why did you have to insult her like that?" "D

Mark arrived before the ambulance did, his tow truck pulling up at the scene with a blaring screech. He stepped out of it, eyes searching the vicinity for Daniel until he finally found him. “Hey bro, what’s going on?!” He walked over. “Is everything alright?” Daniel looked over at Mark, sighing deeply. “Can you help me move her around on the back seat, please? The ambulance is taking too long, I’ll take her to the hospital myself.” “Yeah Bro…no problem.” Mark replied. As Daniel’s thick, muscular arms reached beneath Naomi’s back to lift her, her eyes flew wide open and on instincts she shoved him away. “What are you doing?!” Daniel’s eyes quickly drifted down to stare at her, surprise embedded in the brown orbs. “You fainted, I was merely trying to get you around the back seat so I can lay you down in a better position.” “I fainted...?” she looked around finding that she was indeed laid on the ground, her head in Daniel’s hand. “Oh dear...what happened?” Mark turned to face her.

Daniel turned with a reluctant look. “That won’t be necessary. It would be much better if you steer your car and let Mark tow my car.”Before Stacy could say another word, Mark interrupted. “I think that’s a good idea because you know your car better than us.”With a frown on her face, Stacy walked over to her car. “Okay, no problem.”Daniel looked between them both, “Come on, let’s get cracking…remember I have to go to the hospital to pick up Naomi.”Mark gestured towards Daniel with his chin. “I can do that for you if you’d like?”“I would indeed love that, but it is better if I go.”Desperate to see Naomi again, Mark sighed. “Can I come with you?”“Why Mark? For what reason?”“I already told yo~”“Can we just go, I thought we were in a rush.” Stacy interrupted.Mark sighed, getting started with situating the car on his tow truck. When he deemed himself done, he cracked down his window from the inside and says… “I’m all set, we can go now.”The scrobbling sound of the truck starting

Daniel’s car came to stop in front of the hospital, but before he even attempted to step out of it, he couldn’t help but softly utter. “Lord, please let her be calm.”She could be fiery at times and sh~Daniel’s head whipped towards the door of his passenger seat when it was loudly slammed shut by no other than Mark. “What the hell man?! Is there a problem with you?” Daniel pushed his door open and stepped outside, glaring at him.“No, just my hands slammed the door too hard, sorry.” Mark apologized. “That and you were taking too long.”“You…” Daniel ignored him as he reached into his car for the flowers he had bought along the way as well as the lunch box. “I got her some roses, hope it's her favorite color.”He didn’t even get the chance to ask her about that…her favorite color…Sighing, he followed Mark towards the hospital doors, stepping inside when he pushed it open, and then they immediately went over to the front desk.“Where can I find Naomi?”The Secretary stared at Mark. “A

A minute after Nurse Williams placed the sphygmomanometer around Naomi’s upper arm, it beeped, and she noticed that her patient’s blood pressure was still high. “Your pressure is high. It’s 190/100, we need to continue to keep you on observation before it gets out of control.”That wasn’t what Naomi wanted to hear, but bad luck seemed to be what was out for her today. “What is the normal rate?”“It’s supposed to be like 120/80. Your systolic is like 70 unit up and your diastolic is 20 units higher. Please, I need you to get some rest, try not to think about anything, and when I say nothing, I mean nothing, okay?”Naomi nodded indolently. “I will try my best. I need to get out of here too because I have a lot of work at the office to take care of.”“And if I may ask, what type of job do you do?”“I am a Lawyer.” Naomi answer.Mrs. Williams looked back at Daniel, her eyes squinting as thoughts ran through her head.Is this the lawyer on Daniel’s case? • The Secrets Unfold    Chapter Eighteen

Naomi stared at her phone long after the line went dead. The breeze that once felt warm now clung to her skin like a warning. She blinked, trying to refocus, but the world around her had already started shifting—tilting, cracking at the edges of what she believed was solid ground.Detective Harlan’s words rang in her ears."Someone tampered with the originals."She closed her eyes, gripping the railing beside the back steps. Her breath came shallow, the weight of the moment crashing down like a verdict.“Naomi?”Grace was at her side, eyes narrowing the instant she saw Naomi’s face.“What happened?”Naomi opened her mouth, then shook her head. “Not here. Not now.”Grace nodded, sensing the depth of the moment. “Come on,” she said, guiding her inside and up to Naomi’s study—her private space, where chaos had no permission to intrude. As soon as the door clicked shut, Naomi turned and paced. “The evidence—Daniel’s alibi, his timestamps, security camera pulls—they were tampered with.”Gr

Naomi felt the air shift as Daniel walked into the backyard, his presence pulling invisible strings that adjusted everyone’s posture and tone. Even the breeze felt different. Mark handed Daniel a plate, his smile tight. “Didn’t think we’d see you today.” Daniel accepted it without a blink. “Didn’t think so either. Life’s unpredictable like that.” Mark gave a short laugh, but it lacked warmth. “Well, hope you brought an appetite.” Naomi stepped between them before the tension could sharpen. “Daniel, why don’t you sit with Grace? I’ll get you something to drink.” Daniel’s eyes followed hers to the table, where Grace was already waving him over like an old friend. He gave Naomi a subtle look—one that said thank you—before walking off. As Naomi turned back toward the kitchen, Mark followed her. “So, you knew he was coming?”

Naomi didn’t expect it—the way his voice dipped lower when he spoke to her, or how the air between them thickened every time they made eye contact. There were too many people around, too many reasons not to look too long. But Daniel… he wasn’t playing by the rules today. “Can we talk?” he murmured, just loud enough for her to hear. Naomi blinked, heart skipping. “Right now?” He nodded, already moving toward the side path that led to the garden. Without thinking, she followed. The second they turned the corner, the mask he wore outside slipped. “You didn’t call,” she said first, arms crossed. “You had me thinking—” “I know,” he cut in, stepping closer. “I’m sorry. Things got messy with the hospital, my mom… I didn’t know how to talk without breaking down.” Naomi’s jaw clenched, but her eyes softened. “You could’ve still tried.” “I’m trying now,” he said, voice low, intense. “And I didn’t come here for sympathy.” She met his gaze, defiant. “Then why did you come?” Daniel looke

Naomi’s hand trembled slightly as she placed the phone back into her pocket. She didn’t realize how long she stood there until Grace gave her a slight nudge.“Naomi, you okay?”“I don’t know. I just... I feel so useless right now. Daniel’s going through it, and here I am hosting some half-baked party I don’t even care about.”Grace shook her head gently. “You’re not useless. You’ve done more for him than anyone else probably has. But right now, he’s where he needs to be, and so are you. Don’t let guilt mess up the good you’re trying to do.”Naomi sat back down, letting out a long sigh. “I didn’t even want to do this today. But I thought… maybe if I kept busy, I wouldn’t feel so helpless.”Grace pulled a chair beside her. “Then let’s make the best of it. Eat, smile, and breathe. You’re allowed to live too, Naomi.”Before Naomi could respond, the scent of sizzling meat wafted through the air. Mark was by the grill now, apron half-tied and humming a tune like he

Naomi stood in front of her mirror, combing through her thoughts as her fingers dragged gently through her hair. The silence in her room was loud, the kind that begged for music or motion. She wasn’t sure if it was nerves or fatigue, but something in her spirit just didn’t feel right. “Why am I even doing this again?” she muttered. She looked over at her phone again, hoping for a missed call or message from Daniel. Still nothing. Her mind flipped back to his words from yesterday. “Just take the day, Naomi. I’ll be fine.” Fine? He never was when he said that. Shaking it off, she started to tie her robe, only to be interrupted again—this time, not a knock, but voices rising from the kitchen. “Tell your helper to learn her place,” Mark’s voice echoed slightly. Naomi’s brows furrowed. Already? She slipped on her slides and paced back downstairs. Reaching the hallway, she stood

It was a bright and beautiful day for Naomi to get everyone over. But the thought of not seeing Daniel rushes through her mind. Such a burden. He won’t be here, but the good thing about it, Mark will. Reaching across the bed and over to the nightstand, Naomi grabs the phone, speed dialing her secretary. If nobody else could, then Grace could prepare the best for this day.Grace did hear the phone rings but didn’t want to look because she already knew who it was. She allows it to ring twice, going thrice. Then, she decided, “Hello, I thought today was my day off?”“Yes, it is, don’t tell me you forgot about the party at my house.”“No, I didn’t. After the unfortunate call with his father, Daniel’s mom suddenly popped up in his head. It has been a while too long since he had spoken to her. He needed to call her as soon as he got home. But his dad, why was he suddenly interested in being a father? Why now? Was he for real? The swirling wind blew through the tinted windows of Daniel’s car as he rushed home, combing through his soft hair and caressing his face. He still couldn’t believe it, after so many years, he decided to call now.Daniel’s thoughts kept running over possible reasons why, but none of them added up. He barely remembered how that man looked and if he hadn’t called just now, Daniel wouldn’t have remembered how his voice sounded. This was all…the call…it was a surprise to Daniel.Pulling up in his front yard, Daniel walked to his door, dialing his mother’s number, and reaching her at the third ring. “Daniel…?”Daniel twisted his key in the knob and pushed his door open. “Mom, I bet you wouldn’t be able to tell me
