Chapter 1 Another Choice

Author: Wooden Leaf
Our mother was still trying to talk my sister, Joan Wood, out of her choice. "Gilbert's rich too. I know he doesn't take any money from his family, but he's their heir, so sooner or later…"

Joan cut her off impatiently, "Enough. I spent four years on him, but he wouldn't even give me a moment of his time. What makes you think marrying him would be a happy ending for me? Just relax, Mom. I mean, I'm hot. Jonathan's going to be head over heels for me."

I watched Joan's overflowing self-confidence with amusement. In our previous lives, I was engaged to Jonathan Pearson. Our first meeting happened in a nightclub. He gave me a call and told me to bring him a box of rubbers.

When I walked into his parlor, he was accompanied by five alluring women with bodies that could redefine impossible body standards.

With a grin on his face, Jonathan tossed 100 dollars at my face. "First lesson of being my wife. You have to be smart."

Jonathan had seen more than his fair share of beauty. Beauty was worthless for him.

Yet Joan insisted on her choice, and my mother spoiled her rotten all the time, so she went along.

The next day, I called Gilbert. "Let's meet."

"I don't see the necessity in that," he answered, his reply devoid of warmth.

There was something I had to clear up with this guy before our marriage. I said, "I have news about Gillian Terrason. If that interests you, meet me at the nightclub."

Gillian was Gilbert's adopted sister. He picked her himself when he was a kid, but the girl went missing four years ago.

With my knowledge I gained from my previous life, I knew Gillian was the one thing that weighed heavily on his heart. I knew he would show up.

An hour later, the parlor's door swung open. Gilbert came in, all dressed in black. He took the seat across from me, and the look on his face screamed hostility. "Talk."

I ignored his demands and took out an agreement. "I can leave you to do anything you want and stay out of your business. I'll keep up appearances as a couple, but in exchange, your startup will partner up with mine for this deal."

My mother spent all her money on Joan when I was in college. I worked hard to get the money for tuition and everything else. Right before graduation, I opened up a workshop with my friend.

Our companies were both startups, but his was a lot bigger than mine. If I could get the deal, my company could grow.

He sneered. "What makes you think you can negotiate with me? And do you really think you can tell me what to do?"

"I found out what you did. You turned me against my mother for years. You think you can just waltz in and we'd accept you with open arms and sing Kumbaya in the house like nothing's happened?""No, Gilbert, listen to me! I didn't mean to send that! I was just confused because I was so angry. I was going to disappear for a couple of days and then show up. But I got kidnapped and taken to some other country!""Is that so?" Gilbert clapped his hand, and a child's voice came in."Mom!"The thug came in with their three-year-old child.Panicked, Gillian explained, "No, listen to me! He raped me! He's the guy who kidnapped me! You have to get him arrested! Arrested!"The thug was tearing up. He looked like a doll covered in cracks and could break at any moment. "What? But you said you loved me. You told me you'd go anywhere with me. Please, come back. We'll be a family, just the three of us. Please."Like a possessed woman, she ran down with superhuman speed and grabbed a bottle of wi

Gilbert tensed up, and my heart skipped a beat. There was a crystal sneaker hanging from the chain. It was supposed to be a pair, but I lost it at the riverside that night. I tried to search for it, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find the other shoe.Gilbert jerked his head up. Before I could say anything, he darted out of my house, and he almost staggered on the way. That was defeating. I plopped down on my couch as the world around me started to crash and burn.Great, he thought I was an easy girl now. We never saw each other again for days after that awkward meeting, nor did we call or text. Still, Diana was working on the wedding with me diligently. Then, finally, the wedding day came. I was backstage, my nerves wracking so much, my hands were clammy. I wasn't sure if Gilbert would show up.The moment I finished doing my makeup, the host summoned me. "It's time. Take the stage.""And the groom?" I asked. "Is he here?"The host shook their head. "He's probably busy

I listened to Diana talk about Gilbert's childhood. As I scanned the awards and accolades, I found one that caught my attention. It was a runner-up trophy for a mechanical design competition. First place belonged to me."Oh, that one? The men I sent to keep an eye on him fished it out of the trash. Though he never talked to me after he got into college, I couldn't just ignore him. I'm still his mother, so I made sure someone would keep an eye on him at all times. That's the only second place he got in his life, and he tossed it into the bin right away."They told me he went to the riverside and drank enough to make a mountain of bottles."My heart skipped a beat, and my breathing turned heavy. I was there that night as well. It was right after I won first place, and the young, happy me wanted to share the news with my mother. The first thing I saw when I got home was Joan crying in my mother's arms. My mother slapped me. "So what if you got first prize? It's nothing!"Like a hurt

Diana's jaw dropped. "What? She confessed to you, Gilbert?"A confused Gilbert asked, "Yeah. I thought you knew that. You sent her overseas and left her for dead because you thought her love for me would hurt the family's reputation if someone found out.""I didn't do that! When I found out she had feelings for you, I talked to her about it, but I didn't say anything too severe. She promised me she would put her feelings aside and focus on school.""That's not what she said!" Gilbert took out his phone. There was a text Gillian sent him before her disappearance.'Don't get mad at Mom, Gilbert. She didn't make me do this. I wanted to leave. You've let me stay with the family for ten years. You've done your obligation to me. I'll carry this love with me and survive in this barren, impoverished nation. Farewell, my dear brother.'Gilbert and his mother were smart people. They saw through Gillian's trick immediately. She was trying to pit them against each other.…In my previous li

I was going to say something, but he continued, "That bridesmaid was my doing too. I told her to drive a wedge between Joan and Jonathan. How do you like that? Oh, and I was serious about giving you the millions."That was a surprise. A cold, aloof man doing that much for me? Then, I looked at him. Something sparked in me. Hope. Perhaps I really could achieve my dream of having a place I could call home. And then the next thing that came out of his mouth killed my dream. "Don't take this the wrong way. I just want to find out what happened to Gillian. I don't mind you dangling the carrot, but don't take it too far."I could smell the warning in that. It was then my phone rang. Unknown number, but I picked it up anyway. The voice that came belonged to a middle-aged woman. "Katherine Wood? I'm Gilbert's mother. Take him back to my place for dinner. We should meet."A simple request, but I hesitated to say yes. In my previous life, I heard Gilbert blamed the disappearance of Gillian

"You're an embarrassment to Mom! This is for her!" Joan said.A wave of injustice fell over me, and my tears wouldn't stop coming.Right then, an icy, biting voice said, "Stop right now!"Gilbert came into my company still wearing black, and he stood as a wall between me and the women. My mom put on a simpering expression. "Ah, you're here, Gilbert."Joan gnashed her teeth. She hissed, "You're going to defend that bitch? No way."Gilbert arched an eyebrow. "Of course I'm going to defend her."I covered my cheek, and a smile curved my lips. Once again, my gamble was fruitful. I noticed Ronald texting someone while my mother was scolding me, and I knew it was for Gilbert. My mother chuckled awkwardly. "I mean, the Pearsons gave me 1.5 million, but you're giving me nothing, so…"Gilbert retorted, "You make your daughters sound like merchandise instead of living humans."My mother had no answer for that, so she grabbed Joan and scurried off.…After they were out of sight, Gilb
