Chapter 1: Why Is This Happening?

Kydence lost her sight when she was ten, by the time her wolf surfaced it was too late for the beast to save her human’s sight. Kydence has two brothers, Kasper, and Kruz, who are her triplets and a younger sister, Kolby. They are the future Beta’s of the Shadow Mountain pack. Their uncle is Alpha Kelvin Shadow, her father’s older brother.

She learned to get around the pack territory with the help of her brother’s, her cousin and childhood friend, Andrew Chambers. Andrew was always there for her and protected her. Kydence secretly hoped that Andrew would be her mate.  Her brothers, cousin and Andrew trained with her so her other senses could enhance and get stronger. As she got older and adjusted to life without her vision, she became stronger and eventually became one of the top warriors and trainers. No one could match her senses to the surprise of every pack member. She had been seen as the weak link and would have to be protected in case of a rogue attack. Kydence hated being looked at like a weakling, she promised herself that she wouldn’t depend on anyone, not even her mate, to protect her.

When she and her brothers turned sixteen not only were they able to find their mate, but they also discovered that they are Shadow Guards. Shadow Guards are Elite Warriors blessed by the Moon Goddess to protect all her children from the evil in the supernatural and human realms. Her uncle and father already knew that the triplets were blessed by the Moon Goddess, all her warriors bored a small moon shaped birthmark that could only be seen by the Alpha and Beta of the Shadow Guards.  Only the Alpha, Beta and Gamma knew the true identity of the Shadow Guards. To ensure that her children were protected she allow five Shadow to be born to each pack and when they reached the age of five.  They and their family were sent to Shadow Mountain to train.  When they were done training, they returned to their home pack to train and protect their pack.

“Why is this happening to her?”  Kora silently sobbed.  “She’s…she’s only ten, her wolf won’t emerge for another six years.”  She said to no one in particular.  “It’ll be too late for her wolf to help heal her.  “Kyde is a strong female, she’ll get through this.”  Dr. Waters started to say.  “The best thing to do is to start helping her adjust to her surroundings.  I know of a school for the blind that can help her learn to read brail and to use her other senses.”  “Dr. Waters we are wolves, we already know how to use our other senses.”  Karson said.  “Besides, she’s not going to want to leave home.”  He sighed leaning his head back.  “We’ll find a private tutor to come to us.  We will pull together as a family to hope her adjust and we need to teach her to protect herself.”  He said.  He looked at the doctor and then to his mate.  She smiled at him.

“Then let’s get to it.”  She told him and got up to leave the room.  “Kyde, c’mon we have to go.”  She held out her hand to her daughter.  “What did the doctor say.”  Kyde asked.  “Oh, my little punkin.  I’m so sorry you have to go through this, but we are all here for you and we will always be your strength.”  Kora said and pulled her daughter in for a tight hug.  “How much longer until it’s all gone?”  Kyde asked.  “Not sure but now is the time to start preparing.  You’ll need to learn to read brail, learn the way around the pack territory, you’ll also need to start using your other senses.  They will be your new way of life.”  Kyde sighed and looked up at her mom and dad, who was now holding her and her mom.

“Okay no more pity party,” Karson said, “your uncle is pestering me to know more so, let’s get going and make a plan.  He led them back to their car.  “So, do we make dinner or pick up?”  Kora asked.  “I’m sure that Aunt Lily will have something ready for us.”  Kyde laughed.  Instead of heading back to their house, Karson drove to the pack house where her cousin, brothers and sister were waiting.  “So, what did the doctor say?”  Her cousin, Sofia asked as soon as they walked in.  “Hi to you too cuz.”  Kyde snorted.  “Sofia, give them a chance to sit down and get themselves together.”  Kelvin, Kyde’s uncle and Alpha of Shadow Mountain pack, told his daughter.  Kelvin made his way over to sit next to his beloved niece.

“What do we need to do to prepare?”  Her uncle asked.  “First, we need to bring in a private tutor to teach her to learn brail and help her finish school.”  Karson started.  “Aren’t there schools for that?”  Lily asked.  “No!!  I don’t want to leave home.”  Kyde yelled.  Kycen and Kasper, her triplet brothers wrapped her in a brotherly embrace.  “If you want to the school, we’ll go with you.”  Kycen promised.  “You’re not the one going blind, dummy.”  She sobbed.  “No but we’re the three musketeers, we stick together.”  Kasper assured her.  “No one is going to anywhere.”  Karson stated trying to calm his little punkin down.  “We already told the doctor and she’ll get us the names of some private tutors and I’ve already started looking into everything.”  He said.  “We will also need to come up with a training program for her.”  “NO!”  Kora snapped.  “She will NOT be training.”  “Mom, I wanna train.”  Kyde begged.  “I hafta to train, how else am I gonna be able to protect myself?”  She asked her mom.  “You won’t need to protect yourself; you’ll have your brother’s and Sofia.”  “Yeah, and what if neither of them are around?  What then?”  Kyde asked.  “Tell them, oh wait, I need to wait for my cousin or brothers.  Like a rogue or whoever is going to want to wait for them to come to my rescue.”  She huffed.  “You’re going to college anyway, so it won’t make a difference.”  “Mom, I’m ten, I’m not going to college yet.  If I even go to college.”  Kyde snorted.  “You will go.”  Kora demanded.

“Mom, I don’t know what I’m going to do but I do know that right now, I need to be able to protect myself and show, no prove, that I am not a burden to you or the pack.”  She said.  “Kydence Shadow!”  Alpha Kelvin bellowed.  “You are NOT a burden on our pack.”  He told her.  “But it’s true uncle.  There are some that are already saying that I will be useless, I don’t want that.”  She sighed.

Kora rubbed her face.  “Sweetheart, I don’t think that training is a good idea, not now.  You already have so much going on.”  “Mom, please.  I need this.  I don’t want anyone to feel like they hafta take care of me.”  Kyde said looking up at her mom.  “Mom, we’ll be there with her.”  Kycen promised.  “We’ll come up with a program for her.”  Kasper assured his mom.  “Aunt Kora, please let us do this.”  Sofia asked.  Before she could say anything, the pack house door flung open and Kyde was pulled from her brother’s embrace and wrapped up in a tight hug by someone else.  “I rushed over as soon as I could.”  “Andrew, I can’t breathe.”  Kyde panted.  “Oh, sorry.”  He said loosening his hold on her.

Andrew Chambers is the best friend of Kycen and Kasper Shadow.  He’s about a year older than they are and he’s been a protector of Kyde.  He wanted to be her mate.  He has ingrained himself in their lives since they were toddlers.  “Tell me what do, what do I need to do?”  He asked sitting next to Kyde holding her hand.  “Well, first of all, we are going to have lunch, relax and then tomorrow we will start to set up a plan.”  “I’ll be there through it all.  I promise.”  Andrew said squeezing Kyde’s hand.  “Andrew thank you for your concern but for now, we will be the ones to start working with her.  Once we have some kinda routine, then you can join in.”  Karson told Andrew.  “Beta, please I want to help Kyde.”  He said as he caressed her cheek.  “I know, I feel that she’s my mate.”

“Andrew, you can’t know that it’s way too early.”  Lily told him.  “Only your wolf can be the one to tell you that and he won’t be here for another five or six years.”  “Yes, Luna I know but I feel a pull to her.”  He started to say.  “Andrew you come from a long line of Delta’s and it’s probably just your instincts kicking in to protect her.”  Kelvin said.  “In any case, as soon as we know what we are going to do, we will let you know.  Now, we are going to have a family dinner.”  Andrew nodded, kissed Kyde’s forehead and made his way out.

“Sorry kids, but I think right now we need to just be a family.”  Kelvin told them.  “Nah, that’s cool Uncle K.”  Kasper shrugged.  “Yeah, Kyde’s too young for all that talk.”  Kycen mumbled.  “We are the same age you, big dummy.”  Kyde giggled at her brother. “Yeah, well, you’re our little sister.”  He snipped.  “Whatever, only by like ten minutes from you and five from Kas.”  “Still makes you our little sister.”  “Alright, alright I think the first thing to do is to make sure you know your way around all of our pack territory and learn to use all your other senses.  You don’t have your wolf yet so you’re going to have to work hard to develop them.”  Karson told her.  “You’ll need to wear a blindfold while you walk around the territory.”  He explained.  “We can start that tomorrow; she’ll need to first walk it without the blindfold and then with the blindfold.”  Kycen started.

They may be only ten but are smart and a little more advanced than the other pups.  Her brothers and little sister were a part of everything having to do with Kyde’s treatment since they first realized there was something wrong.

The next day Kycen, Kasper, Kolby, and Sofia went outside to start Kyde’s training.  “Okay, Kyde you need to start to memorize our backyard and then close your eyes and tell us where and what everything is.”  Kycen instructed.  They spent about a month familiarizing herself with the area around their home and moved on to the areas around the territory, she quickly learned the territory with a few months and by the time her sight started to dim she was getting around as if she could see.
