Sonia’s heart seized. She and Eric were already moving, file clutched tight, adrenaline sharpening her every step. They rounded a corner, the world a blur of stone and shadows, and found Mavina Cross standing in the middle of the hallway, her face pale as bone, eyes wide with terror.

“Mavina,” Sonia gasped, feeling the echo of Silas’s voice on her tongue.

Mavina’s eyes flicked to her, and for a moment, Sonia saw the girl beneath the queen, the vulnerability that even Daxton’s iron walls couldn’t hide.

“They’re here,” Mavina whispered, voice trembling. “The Cartel of Crowns. They’ve found us.”

Eric swore under his breath, his jaw tight. “Where?”

“Everywhere,” Mavina said, her voice cracking. “They’re rounding up anyone who’s asked questions. They think I’m still on their side.”

Sonia felt her pulse drum in her ears. This was the next phase, the game Silas had warned her about, the moment the masks fell and the predators revealed themselves.

She stepped closer to Mavina, her voice low. “We need to get everyone out. Can you help us?”

Mavina’s lips trembled, but then her chin lifted, her eyes hardening like steel. “Yes,” she breathed. “But you need to trust me.”

Eric’s eyes darted between the two girls, wary. “She’s lied before.”

Mavina flinched as if he’d struck her. “I had to. You think I wanted to be part of their games? You think I wanted to…” Her voice broke, and tears welled in her eyes. “They threatened to kill my family.”

Sonia reached out, her fingers brushing Mavina’s sleeve. “We all have reasons,” she said gently. “But right now, we’re out of time. Lead us to a safe place. Then we’ll talk.”

Mavina nodded, and with one last glance down the hall, she took off at a run. Sonia and Eric followed, their breath ragged, the file heavy in Sonia’s arms.

They moved through hidden passages Sonia didn’t know existed, narrow staircases, forgotten classrooms that smelled of dust and secrets. At last, Mavina pushed open a door and led them into what looked like an old chapel, its stained glass shattered and its pews covered in tattered tarps.

“This was where the founders used to pray,” Mavina said, her voice small, reverent. “No one comes here anymore.”

Eric scanned the room, his hand brushing the hilt of the hidden knife at his belt. “We can hide here, but we can’t stay long.”

Sonia clutched the file to her chest. “We have everything we need to expose them,” she said, her voice trembling with both fear and defiance. “Bank records, photos—Silas was right all along.”

Mavina’s gaze softened at the name. “Silas was always braver than any of us,” she whispered. “He saw them for what they were.”

Sonia’s throat tightened. “He was my brother.”

The air seemed to shift, the weight of that truth settling between them like a shared burden. Mavina reached out and squeezed Sonia’s hand.

“I’m sorry,” she said, her eyes glistening. “For everything. I never wanted this.”

Eric stepped closer, his eyes on Sonia. “We need to decide: run, or fight.”

Sonia met his gaze. She thought of Silas’s smile, of the night he’d kissed her cheek and whispered, “Don’t let them win.”

“We fight,” she said, her voice steel and smoke. “But we need to be smart. We can’t just throw ourselves at them. We need to outplay them.”

Eric’s smile was a flash of darkness and light. “That’s my girl,” he said, his voice low, rough with emotion.

He reached for her, his fingers brushing her cheek. For a moment, the world shrank to that single touch, and the ache in her chest eased.

Then, suddenly, Mavina stiffened. “Listen,” she hissed.

They all froze. Footsteps in multiple pairs echoed in the hallway outside. Heavy. Intentional.

Sonia’s pulse spiked. She grabbed Eric’s hand, clutching it like a lifeline.

“Hide,” Eric whispered.

The door creaked open, and a man in a black suit stepped inside.

“I know you’re here,” he said, his tone cold and amused. “Come out, and maybe I’ll let you live.”

Sonia felt Eric’s hand tighten around hers. Their eyes met, and in that moment, a silent promise passed between them: no matter what, they’d fight.

Because she wasn’t just Silas’s twin anymore.

She was his legacy.

And she wouldn’t let the darkness win.

Sonia’s feet felt like lead, every step a reminder of the body she’d left behind. Her mind couldn’t shut out the image, his eyes wide with surprise, the way he’d fallen so suddenly, like a puppet with its strings cut.Her chest ached. She’d never imagined she’d be capable of ending a life. She’d trained for moments like this, trained to wear her brother’s face and his strength, but the reality was different. It was heavier and messier. She stumbled, and Eric caught her with both hands, steadying her. His eyes found hers, dark and worried. “Sonia,” he whispered, voice low, raw. “Hey… breathe.”She tried. Her breath came in ragged gasps, her vision swimming. “I… I killed him,” she choked out. “Eric, I killed him.”His hands were on her face, warm and grounding, thumbs brushing her damp cheeks. “You had no choice,” he said, his voice gentle but fierce. “He would have killed you. He would have killed me. You did what you had to do.”Her eyes darted away, shame burrowing deep. “That doesn’

Sonia stared at the gun, her fingers numb, her breath ragged. She could still feel the tension in her arms, the tremor in her hands. The man on the floor wasn’t moving, she’d made sure of that. She’d done it. She’d pulled the trigger.A shudder ran through her body, one she couldn’t stop. Her knees threatened to buckle. She’d always thought she was strong enough for this...strong enough to wear Silas’s face, to shoulder his secrets but right now she felt like she might shatter into a thousand pieces.Eric’s voice sliced through the fog. “Sonia.” He sounded different, soft, almost broken. When she turned to him, he wasn’t the cold, unflappable Eric everyone at Daxton feared. He was just a boy, his eyes wide, his lips parted, like he was seeing her for the first time. Her voice cracked. “I… I didn’t want to. I had to. He would’ve..”He was already moving, crossing the space between them in three steps. His arms came around her, warm and strong, and she clutched his shirt like a lifeline

The man moved forward.Sonia’s breath caught, every muscle tensed. Her fingers ached from clutching the file, this file that could bring everything crashing down or save them all, depending on whose hands held it.Eric’s hand found hers in the darkness behind the broken statue.“Stay behind me,” he whispered, his voice low but trembling, like he was trying to sound braver than he felt. His eyes, shadowed but steady, met hers. He was trying so hard to be her shield, her protector. She wanted to protest. She wanted to stand beside him and fight this together, not hide like she’d done all her life. But the desperation in his eyes made her swallow her pride. He needed this to feel like he could keep her safe, even if just for a moment.“I know you’re here,” the man said, “And I’m not leaving until I get what I came for.”Eric’s jaw clenched. She could see the muscles in his arm trembling. “You’re not getting it,” he said, his voice low, rough around the edges. The man let out a dark laugh

Sonia clutched the file as if it were her heart itself. Fragile, vital, and at risk of being torn open. Her fingers trembled, and Eric’s hand on hers steadied her. They’d found a dusty storage room near the old north wing, a place even the ghosts of Daxton seemed to avoid. Shadows danced on the stone walls, shifting with the flickering light of the single candle Eric had found. He watched her with eyes so dark and deep they felt like they might swallow her whole. And she didn’t mind. Not anymore.“You sure you want to do this tonight?” he asked, voice low, rough at the edges from too many secrets and too many fights. She met his gaze, the candlelight casting him in warm gold and softening the hard lines of his face. “If we don’t…someone else will,” she whispered. “And then Silas will have died for nothing.”His jaw tightened at her words, and his thumb traced a slow, comforting line along the back of her hand. “Then let’s do it.”She spread the file out on the old wooden table. The file she’d stolen felt heavier with every step, the weight of a thousand secrets digging into her ribs. Every breath she took seemed to echo off the cold stone walls. She pushed forward, skirting piles of broken chairs and torn banners. Daxton had its hidden corridors, its burial grounds of history and lies and she was the only one left to navigate them tonight. She thought of Rivers and his last glance, it was fierce, protective, tired. She wondered if he’d make it out. She wondered if he’d ever forgive her for dragging him deeper into the fire. But she had no time to doubt. Every second she lingered was a second she might lose everything.A noise ahead stopped her, a whisper of movement that didn’t belong to rats or wind. She shrank against the wall, heart hammering. The file clutched tight against her chest.A figure emerged from the darkness, a silhouette of sharp lines and tense shoulders. Sonia’s pulse jumped. She recognized him even in the half-light.“Eric,” she breathed,
