The word mother did not sound like a family title anymore.

It sounded like a threat.

Zara knelt beside Daniel as Adrian pressed the towel harder against the wound.

Blood seeped through almost immediately.

“This is not something we can treat with coffee and towels,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

“It missed the artery,” Daniel whispered.

“You don’t know that.”

“I was a surgeon before I became your father.”

The correction caught in her chest.

Before I became your father.

Not a denial.

A choice.

Adrian looked at the wound with clinical focus.

“It’s through and through. The bleeding is slower than it should be if an artery was hit.”

Zara stared at him.

“You know medicine too?”

“Boarding school,” he said dryly. “They considered survival a useful extracurricular activity.”

Under different circumstances, she might have smiled.

Instead, she held the towel while Adrian opened the medical kit again.

Daniel watched them both with a strange expression.

“What?”

His eyes moved between their faces.

“You’re already working together.”

The observation unsettled her more than it should have.

Adrian cleaned the wound quickly and efficiently.

Daniel hissed in pain but did not pull away.

“Who shot you?” Adrian asked.

“I didn’t see.”

“Did they say anything?”

Daniel was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “They asked for the original file.”

Zara’s head snapped up.

“There’s an original file?”

Daniel nodded weakly.

“The copies in the archive were never the real records.”

Adrian stopped what he was doing.

“Where is it?”

Daniel looked at the fire.

“I don’t have it.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

A long silence.

Then Daniel lifted his eyes to Adrian’s.

“Your mother does.”

The room seemed to tighten.

Zara felt a chill crawl up her spine.

“Valentina has the original records?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she keep them?”

Daniel’s voice grew quieter.

“Because they contain the one thing that was removed from every official copy.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“The father’s name.”

Daniel did not answer.

He didn’t need to.

The fire popped softly.

Rain continued to drum against the windows, sealing the cottage away from the world.

Zara sat back slowly, trying to breathe through the pressure building in her chest.

“So all of this; the sealed file, the altered records, the marriage; comes down to one missing name.”

“Yes,” Daniel said.

“And Valentina has it.”

“Yes.”

Adrian finished bandaging the wound and tied the dressing firmly.

Daniel winced, then leaned back against the sofa, exhausted.

For a few moments, no one spoke.

Then Zara asked the question that had been waiting in the shadows.

“Did my mother love him?”

Daniel looked at her carefully.

“The man whose name is missing?”

She nodded.

A sad smile touched his face.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt in a way she had not expected.

Because it made Isabella real.

Not a mystery.

Not a scandal.

A woman who had loved someone enough to have a child with him; and feared him enough to hide that child afterward.

“Did he love her?” Zara whispered.

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“I think that’s the wrong question.”

The silence that followed was heavy with things he still refused to say.

Adrian stood and walked to the fireplace.

“You’re protecting someone.”

Daniel looked up.

“I protected Isabella.”

“You’re still protecting someone.”

Their eyes locked.

And Zara realized Adrian was no longer speaking as a son.

He was speaking as a man investigating a crime.

“Tell me what my father did,” Adrian said quietly.

Daniel held his gaze for a long moment.

Then he looked away.

“That’s the one truth I can’t give you.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Can’t or won’t?”

“Both.”

The answer seemed to anger him more than a lie would have.

He turned away sharply and stared into the fire.

Zara watched the tension in his shoulders, the rigid control in his posture.

For the first time, she understood something important.

Adrian was not defending his father.

He was afraid of what he might discover about him.

A sudden sound broke the silence.

A car.

All three of them froze.

Headlights swept across the rain streaked windows.

Adrian moved instantly, extinguishing the lamp beside the sofa.

The cottage fell into shadow.

Another set of headlights appeared behind the first.

Two vehicles.

Zara’s pulse quickened.

“No one should know we’re here.”

Daniel struggled to sit up straighter.

“They followed me.”

Adrian looked toward the window.

“How many people?”

“I only saw one car when I left the estate.”

The engines cut off.

Doors opened.

Muffled voices carried through the rain.

Adrian crossed to the wall and opened a narrow cupboard Zara had not noticed before.

Inside was a locked metal box.

He entered a code without hesitation.

The box clicked open.

Zara stared.

A pistol lay inside.

She looked at him in disbelief.

“You keep a gun in the wine cottage?”

He checked the magazine with practiced movements.

“My family keeps everything.”

The ease with which he handled it sent a strange shiver through her.

Not fear.

Awareness.

This was a side of Adrian she had not seen before.

Not the distant heir.

Not the reluctant husband.

Someone trained for danger.

Outside, footsteps approached the porch.

One set.

Then another.

A knock sounded.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Three times.

Exactly like before.

Zara’s breath caught.

No one spoke.

Then a woman’s voice came through the door.

Calm.

Elegant.

Terrifyingly familiar.

“Adrian,” Valentina Moretti said. “Open the door.”

Zara forgot how to breathe.Matteo stood at the bottom of the staircase.Alive.Again.But this time, something was wrong. It wasn’t simply the shock of seeing him there. It was the way he was standing. The way he looked at her. There was no confusion in his eyes.No relief. No fear.Only recognition.Deep, unsettling recognition.“Matteo,” Zara whispered. He smiled.“Hello, Zara.”Isabella stumbled backward.“No.”Matteo’s eyes shifted toward her.“Hello, Isabella.”She shook her head violently.“You can’t be here.”“Why?”“Because you’re upstairs.”Everyone turned.Zara’s blood ran cold. She looked behind her.The real Matteo was still there.Standing near Sophia.Pale.Shaken.Frozen.Zara turned back toward the man below. Then back to Matteo. Then down again. The man at the bottom of the stairs smiled.“That,” he said quietly, “is exactly why you were never meant to know the truth.”Sophia grabbed Zara’s arm.“There are two of them.”“No,” Daniel whispered. His face had gone white

Zara stared at the piece of paper in her hand.Leonardo.The name seemed to pulse beneath her fingers. For a moment, the entire vault disappeared. The blood on the floor. The broken black box.The abandoned wheelchair. The hidden passage. All of it faded behind one thought.Leonardo was dead.Or at least, that was what everyone had allowed her to believe.Adrian stepped beside her.“Zara.”She didn’t answer. He looked at the paper. His expression changed.“That’s your father’s name.”Zara’s eyes snapped toward him.“No.”Her voice was immediate.“No, it isn’t.”Adrian lowered his voice.“Zara…”“Leonardo was the man who raised me.”She looked toward Daniel.“Wasn’t he?”Daniel didn’t answer. That silence was worse than anything he could have said.Zara’s face tightened.“Daniel.”He slowly looked up.“I don’t know what you’re asking.”“You know exactly what I’m asking.”She held up the paper.“Leonardo. The man who raised me. The man who stopped the scarred stranger when I was five. T

Zara couldn’t move. The words had been simple.Almost too simple. And yet they had managed to tear apart everything she thought she knew.Alessandro was never your father. She looked at Vittorio. Then at the woman standing across from her.Elena.Elena Bellini. The missing child. The fourth heir. The girl who had supposedly been born beside her twenty-five years ago.Her sister. Her face. Her voice. The fourth key.Everything about her should have made Zara feel closer to the truth.Instead, she felt more lost than ever.“You’re lying,” Zara whispered.Elena shook her head.“I wish I were.”Zara turned toward Isabella.“Mom.”Isabella couldn’t meet her eyes. That was enough.Zara’s heart sank.“You knew.”Isabella’s lips trembled.“I knew Alessandro wasn’t your father.”The room seemed to tilt.Adrian stepped closer.“Then who is?”Isabella looked at him.“I don’t know.”Zara stared at her.“You don’t know who my father is?”“I knew who they wanted you to believe was your father.”“Th

Nobody breathed. For several seconds, the only sound inside the vault was the faint ticking of the mechanism hidden inside the wall.Zara stared at the narrow opening. The voice had disappeared, but its final words remained suspended in the air.You were not the only baby born that night. Her fingers tightened around the pendant at her neck.“No.”The word came out barely above a whisper.Isabella stood completely still. Her face had lost every trace of color.Sophia looked from her mother to Zara.“Mom?”Isabella didn’t answer.Amara stepped closer.“You knew.”It wasn’t a question.Isabella finally looked at her daughters.“I knew there was another child.”Zara’s heart seemed to stop.“You knew?”“I didn’t know where the child was.”“But you knew?”“Yes.”Zara took a step toward her.“Then why didn’t you tell me?”Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.“Because I was told the child was dead.”“By who?”Isabella looked at Vittorio.Everyone followed her gaze.Vittorio’s hands tightened a

For several seconds, nobody moved. The wheelchair remained in the doorway, its wheels still turning slightly from the force that had pushed it forward. The man sitting in it looked older than Zara remembered, though the last time she had seen him had been through photographs, recordings, documents, and stories told by people who had spent years either fearing him or obeying him.Vittorio Bellini.Alive.His hands rested quietly over a dark walking cane across his lap. His silver hair was thinner than it had been in the photographs. His face had sharpened with age, and his skin carried the pale, almost translucent look of someone who had spent too long away from sunlight. But his eyes were exactly the same.Cold.Observant.Calculating.They settled on Zara as though everyone else in the room had disappeared.Zara felt Adrian move closer beside her.“Stay behind me,” he whispered.Vittorio smiled. It wasn’t a warm smile. It was the faintest curve of amusement.“You still do that.”Adri

  • The Silence Between Our Vows   Chapter 73: The Daughter No One Knew

Zara couldn’t breathe. The young woman standing beside Isabella looked no older than twenty three. Her face was calm.Almost too calm. She had Isabella’s eyes. The same dark eyes Zara had spent her entire life trying to remember. But there was something else.Something painfully familiar. The shape of her mouth. The curve of her cheek. The way she tilted her head when she looked at Zara.Zara stared at her.“Another sister?”Isabella nodded.“Yes.”Sophia stepped forward.“No.”The young woman looked at her.Sophia’s face had gone completely pale.“You said I was the first.”“I said you were the first heir.”Sophia shook her head.“That’s not what you told me.”“I couldn’t tell you everything.”“You never can.”The bitterness in Sophia’s voice filled the room.Zara looked at Isabella.“How many children do you have?”Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.“Three.”Zara felt something inside her break.“Three?”Isabella nodded.“Sophia.”She looked at the first daughter.“Zara.”Then she l
