He was already on his fifth cigarette. The handsome, powerfully built man stared blankly into the distance, his eyes occasionally flashing with sharp intensity. His discarded batik shirt lay crumpled on the ground beside him.

His features carried a striking blend of Middle Eastern and Western heritage. His skin was neither too fair nor too dark, settling into an even, warm tone. His black hair looked slightly disheveled from repeatedly running his fingers through it in frustration.

Wearing his dark brown tactical pants and a tight white t-shirt that accentuated his muscular chest, he glanced back down at the ground. A yellow folder containing his dishonorable discharge papers from the police force lay where he had hurled it, suppressing his rising fury.

His crime? Shooting a suspect. But the alleged criminal's family had fought back in court, and he was the one left taking the fall.

Following a series of ethics board hearings and suspensions, the final verdict came down hard: he was stripped of his badge and dishonorably discharged from the force, ending his service at the rank of First Lieutenant.

What infuriated him beyond measure was how his commanding officer—the very man who had led the unit—washed his hands clean of the whole affair to protect his own career, using him as a sacrificial lamb.

It had been an ambush operation planned and led directly by the commander himself; Brandon had merely followed orders.

In fact, it was the commander who had given the explicit order to open fire if the drug trafficking ring showed any resistance or attempted to flee.

Yet the narrative flipped completely in court. During the trial, the kingpin's family protested, claiming that their relative was unarmed and non-resistant when he was shot down.

His name was Brandon Irwansyah—a young officer whose promising career had come to a tragic, screeching halt at the age of twenty-five.

He could still vividly recall the courtroom proceedings, specifically the piercing stare of the criminal's wife. The strikingly beautiful woman refused to forgive him for the shooting of her husband, who had been a high-profile fugitive on the police's most-wanted list for over a year as a major drug lord in Jakarta.

Brandon was ultimately found guilty and given a six-month probation sentence. More painfully, his career in law enforcement lay in ashes. As of today, he was a civilian once more—no longer a member of the men in brown.

Brandon had been one of the most elite tactical officers in the field, renowned for his marksmanship. It was rare for a target to escape his sights, as he consistently landed precision shots on a suspect's shoulder or leg.

His fellow officers used to call him the Executioner. But now, that executioner sat motionless in a public park, oblivious to the crowd passing by.

His mind drifted back to the fiery argument between his late mother and father over his decision to join the police force—a decision that ultimately required selling a piece of land just to secure his acceptance into the officer academy.

“I’ve already spent a fortune on his college education! Why do we have to pay to get him into the police academy? They said it was free! I’m not selling that land—it’s the only thing my father left me! What will my siblings say if I sell it off?!” Bahar, his father, had fumed in anger.

“Listen to me, Bahar! Brandon said there are only two passing slots left. Physically, Brandon outperforms his competitor, but that boy’s family is using money to buy his way in!” Kanah, his mother, had argued right back.

A week later, Brandon was stunned when his mother handed him fifty million rupiah in cash, instructing him to pass it immediately to the contact who could guarantee his admission into the academy.

Kanah never revealed where she obtained the money. Once the bribe was handed over, Brandon shortly bade them farewell to attend the two-year police academy, having officially passed the selection.

A year later, Brandon found himself kneeling at a graveside with bloodshot eyes. His mother lay beneath the fresh mound of earth, passing away before she could ever see him graduate as an officer.

He only learned the heartbreaking truth the night he returned home, where his father berated him mercilessly.

“Do you have any idea where your mother got that fifty million rupiah?! She borrowed it from loan sharks! She had to pay three million rupiah every month with thirty million in interest! She worked herself to exhaustion as a maid and selling fried snacks until she fell sick and died! And now, because she’s gone, I’m stuck paying off her debt!” Bahar had glared fiercely at his only son, his voice booming with bitter resentment.

Bahar was merely a low-ranking civil servant. Out of his five-million-rupiah monthly salary, barely two million remained after automatic deductions for their motorcycle and the modest house they lived in.

Brandon had stood there in silence, unable to utter a single word. Staying only one day at home, he packed his bags and went straight back to the police barracks in Bogor, leaving behind his childhood home near Pelabuhan Ratu.

Jack Black stared at each of the five men lined up before him—a selection from his total roster of twenty-five operatives. His gaze settled on one particular subordinate who had joined the company merely two months prior: Brandon. He scanned the young man from head to toe. Standing tall and powerfully built at twenty-five years old, Brandon presented an imposing presence. His hair was neatly combed, framing an oval face with smooth tan skin and a sharp, defined nose. His expression remained utterly cold and reserved. While a faint spark usually resided in his eyes, whenever his lips pressed into a tight line, his gaze hardened—making him appear all the more fierce and unapproachable. At a glance, Jack Black couldn't help but think that Brandon fit the exact profile of a ruthless hitman, carrying an aura that suggested a complete absence of mercy. His short-sleeved dress shirt hugged his well-proportioned, solid torso, paired with fitted jeans that accentuated his long, powerful legs—c

  • The Single Heir   Chapter 5: Venting Together with Novia

“Thank you so much for helping me, mister. My name is Novia. Who are you? Are you really a former cop, like those two officers said earlier?” she asked, looking at Brandon as he sat on a chair while she remained seated on the edge of the bed, since the room had no living room.“Yeah… I’m a former cop… who got fired. Just call me Brandon!” Brandon replied curtly.“Why did he treat you so rough, Novia? Who is that guy anyway? If you want to talk about it, go ahead. If not, that’s fine too,” Brandon said, his cold demeanor still lingering as he stared piercingly at Novia, who was dressed only in a loose house dress.“His name is Punang. He’s my ex-boyfriend. He has a violent temper, loves to drink, and works as an extortionist—basically a street thug. We broke up a long time ago. He wanted to get back together, but I refused. If I went back to him, he’d torture me to death. I don’t even know how he found out my address here, seeing as I’ve only lived in this boarding house for three mont

  • The Single Heir   Chapter 4: Saving a Neighbor

It was a blessing that his service pistol had already been returned to his unit. Had it been within arm's reach, he might have turned the weapon on himself in a moment of pure despair.Brandon had never been one for alcohol; he preferred hitting the gym or practicing karate to blow off steam. As he sat drowning in his frustration, a commotion erupted from the unit right next door.At first, Brandon tried to ignore it. But the noise quickly escalated into loud thuds, followed by the muffled sobs of a woman in distress. That was the breaking point. Brandon loathed nothing more than seeing a woman abused. Stepping out of his room, he followed the sound of the confrontation. The door to the neighboring unit stood ajar. Just inside, a man had his arm clamped tightly around a woman's neck in a brutal chokehold."What do you think you're doing, man? Let her go—you're going to suffocate her!" Brandon called out, his posture instantly reverting to that of an active officer.A few neighbors had

  • The Single Heir   Chapter 3: Applying to Be a Bodyguard

Police Senior Commissioner Roni stared into Brandon’s cold face. As an active detective in the criminal investigation division, he instantly picked up on the burning vengeance flickering in the young man's eyes—a deep resentment toward his former commanding officer, who had set him up during a drug bust operation, using him as a scapegoat to get him dishonorably discharged. After taking a sip of his drink and letting out a slow breath, Commissioner Roni asked what brought Brandon to see him.“I need a job, Commander!” Brandon replied flatly, skipping any pleasantries.“What kind of work are you looking for?”“Anything. I’ll even take a hitman gig if that’s what it takes!”Commissioner Roni recoiled slightly in surprise, then chuckled softly. He pulled out a cigarette and offered one to Brandon, who took it without hesitation.“Would you be interested in working as a bodyguard?” Commissioner Roni offered. Brandon nodded immediately, no questions asked.“Hmm… alright, give me a moment.”

  • The Single Heir   Chapter 2: A Different Face

Before heading back, he took a moment to visit his mother’s grave one last time.“I promise you, Mom, I’ll pay back all your debts and return Dad’s money… I’m graduating from the academy in another year!” Brandon had vowed in his heart back then. Ever since that day, his once cheerful, warm face had turned cold and reserved.Brandon hadn't bothered saying goodbye to his father back then either. He had slipped away quietly, figuring it was pointless anyway—it would only trigger another outburst and berating from the man. What Brandon didn't know at the time was that the man wasn't his biological father. When Bahar married his mother—a former overseas domestic worker in Malaysia—she was already pregnant. Upon getting married, she decided to remain a homemaker rather than heading back overseas.Brandon had discovered the truth entirely by accident. It happened when he had returned home to hand-deliver an invitation to his police academy graduation, where he was set to be commissioned as
