DARIAN

The walls of my office felt closer tonight, the weight of duty and the echo of my brother’s words pressing down on me. Ever since that night, ever since Lucian had the audacity to stand in my face and all but declare his intentions toward Amaya, I hadn’t been the same.

It wasn't just anger. Anger, I could manage. This was worse. This was the slow erosion of control, the crumbling of the wall I had built between myself and her.

Amaya.

Her name came unbidden, a shadow in my mind. Every time I forced my focus onto pack disputes, border unrest, or Theron’s incessant reports, her face slipped through the cracks.

Those dark eyes that always carried more weight than she allowed anyone to see. The way she kept her head high even under Evelara’s cruelty. The memory of her lips, gods, that kiss in the kitchen still haunted me.

I shoved the thought down violently, slamming the ledger closed. The candle on my desk flickered, throwing restless shadows across the stone walls.

AMAYAThe door slams, the sound echoing like thunder in my ears, and I am left staring at the empty space Darian’s anger has carved into the room.I grip the edge of the table until my knuckles ache, forcing myself to breathe evenly. But the truth is, my lungs feel tight, my chest too full, as if the air itself refuses to move. His scent lingers, pine, smoke, and something darker, something that clings to me no matter how hard I try to shake it off.I squeeze my eyes shut. Damn him.I hate that my body still remembers the burn of his nearness, the low rasp of his voice when he said he couldn’t stop thinking about that kiss. I should’ve laughed in his face. Instead, I’m trembling like a fool.“Pull yourself together,” I whisper.I push away from the table, pacing the room. The boards creak under my steps, marking my agitation in sharp notes. My mind replays every word we exchanged, each one cutting deeper than the last."You kissed me, Darian. Not the other way around."I meant it. Eve

LUCIANI knew Evelara was scheming again the moment I caught her standing too long in the shadows of the east hall. Most people passed by with a purpose, servants rushing with trays, guards patrolling with steady steps. Evelara lingered, poised like a spider waiting for prey to stumble into her web. Her head tilted ever so slightly toward the corridor that led to the servants’ wing.I stopped at the far end of the hall, silent, watching her. She didn’t notice me at first. Her eyes were sharp and hungry, lips pursed in quiet satisfaction. The longer I stood there, the colder my blood ran.She wasn’t just watching. She was studying Amaya. Waiting for her. When Amaya finally appeared, carrying folded linens in her arms, Evelara’s posture shifted, shoulders straight, chin lifted, like a hawk spotting a rabbit in an open field.“Amaya,” she called softly, almost sweetly.Amaya froze mid-step, the slightest hesitation before she schooled her features and lowered her head. “My lady.”I clenc

AMAYAThe morning was already heavy with tension before Evelara even entered the chamber.I was on my knees, scrubbing the cold stone floor near the long table where the council usually gathered. The sound of my brush echoed in the otherwise quiet room, and each scrape seemed louder than it should. My thoughts spun restlessly, Lucian’s words, Darian’s silence, my own confusion. I couldn’t seem to quiet my mind anymore. That was when the door opened.I didn’t have to look up to know who it was. Evelara carried her own atmosphere, sharp, cold, dripping with disdain. I felt it wash over me even before I caught the click of her heels.“Still on your knees, I see,” she said smoothly. “How fitting.”I swallowed back the immediate retort that burned on my tongue. Instead, I lowered my gaze and kept scrubbing. “The floors won’t clean themselves.”She circled the table slowly, like a predator surveying prey. "You've been very visible lately, Amaya. Too visible. Always scurrying about at the w

AMAYAI haven’t seen Lucian since that night he slipped into my room. It's strange, the silence that followed. No teasing smirks when I pass him in the corridor. No sudden footsteps catch me off guard in the halls. He's here, always here, I can feel it, but he hasn't pushed his presence on me the way he usually does. And yet, somehow, it feels like he’s closer than ever.I don’t know how to explain it. It’s in the way his eyes linger when we cross paths in the dining hall, in the tension that hangs in the air whenever he’s nearby. It’s in the heat that curls in my chest at the thought of him, no matter how much I try to push it away.I hate it. I hate that I'm drawn to him. I hate that I can't stop thinking about the look he gave me the last time, the look that made my stomach twist as if he was bearing something raw and dangerous.Tonight, the corridors are quiet. I’m carrying folded linens back toward the servants’ wing when I hear footsteps behind me. My heart stutters. I already k

LUCIANThe slam of Darian’s office door still vibrates in my bones as I stride down the hall, fury biting at every step. I can’t breathe. My chest feels too tight, my skin too hot. His words echo in my head, sharp and unforgiving.Stay away from Amaya. As if that’s possible.I reach my room and throw the door shut behind me, leaning back against it with a growl. My fists ache, knuckles raw from clenching them so hard during our confrontation. I wanted to hit him. I wanted to tear into him until one of us bled.Instead, I swallowed it.Because that’s what this is turning into, me choking down the truth while he pretends he has control over it.I push away from the door and stalk to the window, throwing it open to the cold night air. The moon hangs low, pale and watchful, casting silver over the courtyard below. My reflection stares back at me in the glass, jaw tight, eyes burning, hair falling over my face in damp strands from the sweat of rage.I barely recognize myself.“Damn you, Da
