LOGINLily's POV
Ethan lifted the glass toward his mouth, and my body moved before my mind did.
I turned to him fast, like I wanted to kiss his cheek, and my elbow hit the glass. It flew out of his hand and broke on the marble floor. White wine splashed across Margaret's blue dress and all over the rug.
Everyone in the room jumped.
"Oh my God," I said, and I put both hands over my mouth. "Ethan, I'm so sorry. I'm so clumsy tonight."
"It's fine," Ethan said. He looked at the broken glass, then at me, and I saw in his eyes that he understood. "It's only wine."
Margaret's smile looked like it was made of glass too. "Of course, darling. Accidents happen." But her hands were shaking as she wiped her dress, and she wouldn't look at me.
A maid ran in with towels. Before she could touch anything, Marcus stepped in from the hallway, where he had been waiting all night.
"Let me help," Marcus said, and he knelt down and picked up the biggest piece of glass with a napkin. Then he folded the wet napkin and put it in his pocket. Nobody noticed except me and Ethan.
Margaret poured Ethan a new glass from the bottle. This time, she handed it to him without blocking anyone's view. Ethan held it for the toast, but he never once put it to his lips.
I excused myself a few minutes later and went to the bathroom down the hall. I locked the door and stood at the sink with my hands on the cold edge.
My heart wouldn't slow down. Margaret Sinclair had tried to poison Ethan in her own living room, in front of his grandmother. She had smiled while she did it. And on Monday, she would still be the one paying for my brother's care.
I washed my hands and dried them and told myself to go back out there and smile.
When I opened the door, Vanessa was standing in the hallway.
She was leaning against the wall in our matching green dress, holding a glass of champagne. She looked at me the way a cat looks at a mouse.
"Nice trick with the wine," she said.
"I don't know what you mean," I said.
"Sure you don't." She pushed off the wall and came closer. "You think you're so clever, Lily. You think learning the name of my horse makes you me."
"I don't want to be you," I told her. "I just want my brother to live."
She laughed and hugged me. It happened so fast that I didn't have time to step back. Her arms went around me, and my purse got squeezed between us. She smelled like the same perfume her mother wore.
"Then enjoy your last night," she whispered in my ear. "Because after tonight, you're going to be very, very sorry you ever said yes."
She let me go and walked back to the living room, laughing like we had shared a sweet secret.
I stood there for a long moment, feeling strange. Vanessa had never touched me before. She thought I was dirt. Why would she hug me?
I didn't understand it until twenty minutes later.
We were all standing in the front hall, getting our coats, when Vanessa screamed.
"My necklace!" She had both hands at her bare throat. "Aunt Margaret, my diamond necklace is gone! Grandma Rose's necklace!"
Margaret gasped. Mr. Sinclair turned around fast. Even Richard stopped smiling.
"Are you sure you were wearing it?" Mr. Sinclair asked.
"Of course I'm sure, Uncle," Vanessa said, and her eyes filled with tears. "I had it on at dinner. Everyone saw it. And then I took it off in the upstairs bathroom because the clasp was hurting me, and now it's gone." She turned slowly and looked straight at me. "And she was upstairs too. I saw her."
Every head in the hall turned toward me.
"I wasn't upstairs," I said. "I used the bathroom down here."
"Then you won't mind if we look in your purse," Vanessa said.
The hall went silent. I felt Ethan move closer to my side.
"That's enough," he said coldly. "My wife isn't a thief."
"Then she has nothing to hide," Margaret said. Her voice was sweet, but her eyes were hard. "I'm sure it's a mistake. Let's just look, so we can all go home."
I knew what was in my purse. My phone, my lipstick, a bus ticket I should have thrown away, and the little picture of Noah I carried everywhere. Nothing else. So I held it out with my chin up.
"Go ahead," I said.
Eleanor took it before anyone else could. She opened it slowly with her thin, old fingers. She took out my phone. Then my lipstick.
Then she pulled out a long, shining chain, and three big diamonds caught the light from the hall lamp.
Vanessa let out a sob. Margaret pressed a hand to her chest like she might faint.
And I finally understood why Vanessa had hugged me.
"That's not mine," I said. My voice cracked. "I didn't take it. She put it there. She hugged me in the hallway, and she must have..."
"I hugged you because I felt sorry for you," Vanessa cried. "And this is how you pay me back?"
Richard shook his head slowly, like a man watching a sad movie. "Vanessa, how could you steal from your own cousin?"
I looked at Ethan. His face had gone very still, and I couldn't tell what he was thinking. I looked at Mr. Sinclair. He was staring at the floor.
Then I looked at Eleanor.
She was holding the necklace up in front of her face, turning it slowly in the light. She didn't look angry. She didn't look surprised either. She looked like she was thinking very hard.
"Grandma Rose's necklace," Eleanor said quietly. "Is that what you called it, Vivian?"
"Yes," Vanessa said, wiping her eyes. "It was my grandmother's."
Eleanor lowered the necklace and looked straight at her.
"How strange," she said. "Because I was at your grandmother's funeral, my dear. And she was buried wearing this necklace."
Lily's POVWe didn't sleep that night.By the time the fire trucks left the lake house, it was almost four in the morning. A doctor cleaned the glass out of my hands in the back of an ambulance and wrapped them in white bandages. Ethan sat beside me the whole time with Duke at his feet, and he didn't let go of my arm once. The police asked me what happened. I told them the truth. A woman invited me there, locked me inside, and turned on the gas. When they asked me her name, I looked at Ethan."Not yet," he said quietly. "When we tell them, it has to stick."So I said I didn't know her, and I hated how easy the lie came out.Back at the house, Eleanor was waiting in the front hall in her robe, with her cane in both hands. She didn't say a word when she saw my bandages. She just put her thin arms around me and held me for a long time. It was the first time she had ever hugged me. She smelled like lavender and old books, and for a moment I felt like someone's granddaughter."Richard came
Lily's POVFor one second, I couldn't move. The smell was everywhere now, filling my nose and the back of my throat. I knew enough from the diner kitchen to know what happened when gas found a flame. One spark, and the whole house would go up with me inside it.I ran into the kitchen and pulled my sweater up over my mouth. My eyes were burning. I grabbed the knobs on the stove and turned them off one by one, four, five, six, until the hissing stopped. But the room was already full, and the gas was moving toward the living room, toward the fire, with nothing to stop it.Water. I needed water. There was a big glass vase on the kitchen table, full of the same white flowers Margaret loved. I threw the flowers on the floor, grabbed the vase with both hands, and ran back to the living room. The fire was snapping and jumping in the stone fireplace. I threw the water as hard as I could. The flames hissed and shrank, but they didn't die. Half the logs were still glowing red.My head was starti
Lily's POVI waited until the house was asleep.Ethan had fallen asleep a little after eleven, with one arm thrown over his eyes and Duke stretched across the foot of the bed. I lay on my sofa in the dark and listened to him breathe. Every few minutes, I touched the card in my pocket to make sure it was still there.Come alone. If you bring the Blackwoods, the truth dies with me.I knew it was a trap. I wasn't stupid. But all my life, I had believed I knew who I was. I was Lily Carter, the daughter of a woman who worked two jobs and sang in our tiny kitchen. Now I didn't know anything anymore. And the only person who had the answer was the woman who had tried to kill my husband. At half past eleven, I got up. I put on my old jeans and the gray sweater I had brought from home, the only clothes in that house that were really mine. I picked up my shoes and carried them in my hand.At the door, I stopped and looked back at Ethan.I almost woke him. I almost told him everything. But I thou
Lily's POVMarcus drove faster than I had ever seen anyone drive.I sat in the back with my phone pressed to my ear, calling Noah's room again and again. Nobody answered. Every red light felt like an hour. Every car in front of us felt like it was trying to kill me.Ethan sat beside me. He wasn't supposed to be there. Eleanor had told him that if anyone saw him walking into a hospital on his own two feet, the whole plan would fall apart. Ethan had looked at her and said, "Then nobody will see," and put on a baseball cap and a pair of dark glasses and got in the car anyway."He's fine," Ethan kept saying. "Carla said he's fine. Breathe, Lily.""She sat with him," I said. "She sat with my brother and asked about his medicine. The same woman who put poison in your glass last night."He didn't answer that, because there was nothing to say. He just held my hand so tight it almost hurt, and I held his back.I thought about the night Noah's heart stopped, the alarms and the nurses running pa
Lily's POVI don't remember walking back down the east hall. One moment I was sitting in Eleanor's study, and the next I was standing outside Ethan's door with the photo of Rose still in my hand.Eleanor had told me to keep it. "Show him," she said. "He should hear it from you."When I opened the door, Ethan was standing by the window. He was dressed, with his hair still wet from the shower, and Duke was sitting at his feet. He turned around fast when he heard me."What did she say?" he asked. Then he saw my face, and his voice changed. "Lily. What happened?""She knows," I said. "She's known since the wedding. I told her everything."He crossed the room in four steps. He was still slow, but he didn't use the cane. He took my face in both hands and looked at me like he was checking for wounds."Did she threaten you?" he asked. "Did she say she would call the police?""No," I said. "She's on our side."He let out a breath. "My grandmother is never on anyone's side.""She is now," I sai
Lily's POVI stared at the photo until my eyes burned. The young woman in the garden was smiling at whoever held the camera. She looked happy and a little shy, the way I looked in the only good picture my mother ever took of me. I touched the small mark below my own ear without meaning to."How long have you known?" I whispered.Eleanor leaned back in her chair. "Since the day you married my grandson."I looked up at her, and she almost smiled."Do you remember what I said to you at the wedding?" she asked. "I told you that you hated hospitals. Vanessa did hate them. She visited Ethan twice after his accident, and both times she left in under ten minutes. But you sat by his bed and held his hand like you'd been doing it your whole life. And when I said it, you didn't even know what I was talking about. I saw it in your face.""You never said anything," I said."I wanted to see what you would do," she said. "So I watched. Duke growled at Vanessa every time she came to this house, and o
