“Elder Joseph!” I could barely mask the frustration in my voice as I knocked on the door of his home. “We have serious matters to discuss.” I knocked two more times before placing my hand on my hips and pacing back and forth by the door.

Footsteps approached from the other side, and the door opened to reveal the Elder's wife. She mostly kept to herself, and was hardly seen around the pack.

Slight surprise coated her face. She wrapped the shawl over her shoulders tighter, as though the air was chilly. Which I found funny because the heat growing inside of me was unbearable, or maybe it had been born as a result of my anger.

“Where is your husband?” I asked her when she kept looking at me quietly.

“He's not here,” she said in an almost perfect tone.Aa though she had practiced that line over and over in front of a mirror.

“There where is he?”

“I don't know. All I know is that he isn't home.” As she finished the sentence her eyes darted away. I probed deeper with my werewolf sense

Ashley By the time I woke up, it was barely sunrise. I stretched languidly, relishing the feel of my body and wanting nothing more than to remain in bed beside Zane. But I had a plan, and nothing was going to deter me from accomplishing it. I slipped out of the bed quietly, trying to not wake him, and put on my clothes as quickly as possible. When only my shoes were left, I simply picked them up and tiptoed to the door, giving Zane's sleeping form one last look on the bed before forcing myself to leave. He had said that he usually didn't have peaceful nights because of his powers, and the curse. I hoped he had been able to get enough rest. I didn't go to the Grove, or even back to the little room at the outer quarters I lived in, but made my way to the library instead. I needed more information about the Ignis Relic, and where I had to begin my search for it. Over then night, Zane and I had discussed about the Hunt Gathering, and he agreed to restarting it, since he and Bryce alr

ZaneI was getting too used to having Ashley around. She had become a drug I'd grown addicted to. I was certain my body would break down if she just happened to leave my side. She looked up at me from under her lashes, stunned into silence. We had been seated for a while, in nothing but a calm quiet and the dying light. I brushed away the hair covering her beautiful face so that I could see her eyes clearly. “Why won't you say anything?” She sighed, looking unsure of herself. “I don't know what to say . . . This is all too much for me to take in.”“Are you talking about the curse, or us?” “Everything,” she said, falling back into the bed and fanning out her arms. “I still can't bring myself to believe that I'm the one the prophecy speaks about. I've never even considered the possibility because it just seemed so out of place.”“But it's not a far-fetched idea.” I turned my body so that I faced her completely on the bed. “You're wise. You're strong. And somehow . . . you've managed

Jace“We were all fooled by Elder Joseph,” I said. This was in my study, where I sat addressing Lucas and Elder Garett. “And now, the old retard has started pretending like he had no hand in this mess we're in.”“If you wish it so, he will be punished, severely,” said Elder Garett calmly. She drummed her fingers on the wooden desk before her, with her silver ring glinting in the waning light of the evening sun. She looked quite young for her age, with only a slight streak of grey in her chin length hair. Her eyes were cat-like and sensual, snd often, I caught her looking at me in a certain way. Widowed, and obviously in need of a man. I only kept her around because her cunning and immense knowledge had brought our plans this far. “There's no need. He'll get what's coming for him soon enough. Right now, we need to direct our resources to the things that actually matter. Like regaining our lost resources and protecting ourselves from enemies.”Lucas nodded beside me, stroking his goa

Ashley Without hesitation, Zane took me to his quarters. He'd barely shut the door before pulling me flush against him and digging his face into my neck as though he hadn't seen me in years. “Zane . . .” Heat rushed up to my cheeks, and I desperately wanted to pull away. Not because I was ashamed or didn't want to be near him, but because being so close to him often sent a rush of emotions that still seemed so foreign to me.His lips went up my neck and to my cheek, where he placed a kiss. The act was so fluid, without a trace of uncertainty or hesitation. When he finally pulled away from my face, he still held on to me, as though our attachment was a source of strength for him. “I'm sorry you had to face that with Thea,” he said. “I don't know why she just won't give up.”“You're the king. What woman wouldn't do their best to have you?” I said without thinking, before blushing again. But I meant the words, so there was no way I was taking them back. His expressive mouth curled slig

Ashley After washing my hands, I took a seat so that I could effectively listen to what Arthur had to say. Clara did same, although she decided to stay by the door of the room, crossing her strong arms over he chest, face severe.“What's the Ignis Relic? And how did the curse come about?” I started.“No one really knows how the Ignis Relic came about, but there's an old story about how it was the weapon the Moon Goddess used to cut down the trees she used to create our kind. Others say that it belonged to a witch—who cursed the Leventis ancestor that stole it years ago to win the Old War against the humans.”“This artifact. Does anyone know what it looks like?” I asked. At least knowing what it looked like would definitely have been useful. The story didn't really matter, just how to get my hands on that artifact and save Zane's life.Arthur looked at me in a strange way, as though he was assessing something about me that he hadn't noticed before. “Going after the artifact would esse

Ashley “Take the delivery?” I asked, in partial shock. It wasn't like I couldn't, but it had been a long time since I'd had to. We went into the Grove, and headed straight for one of the private consultation rooms at the back. I could already hear the screams coming from the inside. We entered the room, and inside was a woman already lying down on a bed with her knees pressed to her chest and her thighs wide open, pushing with all of her might. Every scream that tore past her lips were so shrill that they twisted my insides. She was a pale, young woman, who looked not much older than myself, with short dark hair and blue eyes that almost looked violent. Sweat clung to her skin and dripped down her face, and her dress stuck to her akin in multiple points, darkened by the watery evidence of her strain.A man stood by her side, holding on to her hand. He seemed to be the anchor preventing the woman from giving up entirely. He looked up when Clara and I entered, but nothing on his fac

Ashley I didn't go the Grove that morning because I had been summoned by someone who I didn't want to meet.Gamma James. The invitation had come so suddenly to my room as I had been preparing for the day. A man that I didn't recognise, but must have been a messenger from the Gamma family had been the one to deliver the message. After putting on pants and a light shirt, I set out to meet him, unable to refrain from feeling a little anxious. What exactly did he want from me? And why had he been on my case? The location for our meeting was by a creek not too far away from the Sacred Grove. He was seated by a rock, staring into space when I found him. His face was a little tiledted towards the sky, as though he was taking in energy directly from the sun.I had been trying to be quiet, but he turned around soon after I found him. He nodded in greeting, eyes sparkling with something I couldn't name. “Good morning, Ashley. Thank you for honouring my invitation, once again. I do hope it wasn

JaceCarina's arm and leg sat on my body as though they belonged there. Her soft snores continued unperturbed, even though sunlight was already coming in through the windows. She had been complaining of heat during the night, and had begged me to keep the blinds open, but it was easy to learn her true intentions when she'd stripped and then practically begged me to make love to her. I moved away from her slowly, careful to not wake her. I glanced down at her naked body, and for a split second, I wished it was someone else. The hair was too light, and her body lacked the angles and trained muscles I'd grown familiar with.Shaking the thoughts out of my head, I got up and prepared to face the day. I had important business with the council.—I bowed lightly as I made entry into the conference room, throwing my navy blue coat over my shoulder. Every Elder was seated already save for Elder Joseph. Whose seat was mysteriously empty.I took my seat on the other side of the large conferen

  • The Stand-In Luna   •Chapter 34•

ZaneThe curse was raging in intensity, and every night I shut my eyes, I could tell that I was steadily approaching the day when I wouldn't have been able to keep myself together. When I would finally fall apart and fade away like ash just as my ancestors had.The night I had spent with Ashley by my side had been the best I had experienced in a while, and not just because of the roaring connection I felt towards her. Right from that raging battlefield when I had taken her from the cold hands of those who wanted to keep her imprisoned, I had sensed something different about her. Something that had been strong enough to quiet the storms raging in my mind and the pain that ate me up on the inside since the curse had been passed on to me.Maybe indeed, she was the density I had been searching for, all wrapped up in a prophecy that time and age had muddled up.But if she was really the ‘Wolfless Luna’ from the prophecy, what did it actually mean for me?—I sipped the hot, black coffee I
