"Who is the girl behind you, Alexander?"

Eleanor Sterling stood at the edge of the private wooden dock. The ocean breeze blew across the water, but her beige linen dress stayed perfectly straight. Her hands were folded over her silver walking stick, her sharp gray eyes scanning the yacht deck.

"Her name is Sienna."

Alec walked down the gangplank first. His heavy leather shoes hit the wooden planks with loud, hollow thuds. His suit jacket was slung over one broad shoulder, his dark hair messy from the salt air.

"That is a name, Alexander. It is not an explanation."

"She is my wife, Mother."

Eleanor did not flinch. She did not raise her voice. She simply adjusted her grip on her walking stick, her eyes drifting past Alec's wide chest to the small figure walking slowly down the wooden ramp behind him.

"The magistrate from the lower district telephoned my private office two hours ago," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and cold as polished stone. "He informed me that the senior heir of Sterling Logistics entered his records room in industrial work boots and filed an immediate marriage registry. I assumed it was an administrative mistake by the local union."

"It was not a mistake," Alec said. "The certificate is signed, stamped, and filed with the state. She carries the Sterling name."

"And your engagement to Genevieve Mayor?" Eleanor asked, her gaze cutting directly into his face. "Three hundred formal invitations were delivered to city hall yesterday morning. The reception venue at the Grand Marina is fully booked for next month. Her father signed the initial maritime development waivers on Monday."

"Call city hall and tell them to shred the paperwork," Alec said, his tone flat and dismissive. "The engagement is finished."

"You do not discard a political alliance like yesterday's newspaper, Alexander."

"I am not marrying Genevieve. That matter is closed."

Sienna reached the bottom of the gangplank, her worn sneakers scraping against the damp cedar wood. She clutched the rough strap of her faded canvas duffel bag against her chest with both hands. Her knees were shaking under her oversized gray sweatpants, and every step sent a sharp, stabbing ache through her bruised ribs.

She cleared her throat, but the sound that came out was a dry, rattling cough that shook her whole frame.

Eleanor turned her attention away from Alec, looking down at Sienna. Her gray eyes swept over the faded, oversized hoodie that hung down to Sienna's knees, the dirty rubber soles of her shoes, and the black soot smudged behind her ear.

"You have toxic residue on your skin, child," Eleanor said, stepping forward.

Sienna pulled her hood lower over her face, staring at the dock planks.

"I am sorry, ma'am," Sienna whispered, her voice rough and raspy from the chemical gas. "The emergency showers at the site field hospital only had cold water. I did not have time to clean up properly before your son put me on the boat."

"Do not apologize for the dust on your skin after surviving a disaster," Eleanor said. "Did you work on the maintenance crew at the sector four station?"

"I was a contract cleaner for the lower pump floors, ma'am."

"And how does a contract cleaner end up with a legal marriage document to the managing director of this estate within four hours of an explosion?"

"Mother," Alec stepped between them, his large frame blocking Eleanor's view of Sienna. "You do not need to cross-examine her on the dock. She does not owe you answers."

"She is standing on my family's private island, Alexander," Eleanor said, her voice firm and uncompromising. "She carries our legal surname into public records. She will speak when I address her."

"I dragged him out of the lower shaft, ma'am," Sienna said, stepping slightly to the side of Alec so Eleanor could see her face. Her voice was weak, but her gray eyes were steady. "The main gas valve blew out. The concrete ceiling cracked and fell across the walkway. He was trapped under the steel support."

Eleanor looked at the white bandage taped tightly across Alec's forehead, then looked down at Sienna's small, trembling hands.

"The radio dispatch reported four men alive from that lower pump chamber," Eleanor said.

"She went into that smoke four separate times," Alec said, his jaw tightening as he spoke. "She dragged Miller out. She dragged the pipe fitter out. She dragged the apprentice to the ladder. Then she came back down into the basement for me while the secondary tanks were igniting. Her lungs are full of industrial chemical fumes."

Eleanor stood motionless for several seconds. The harsh, analytical look on her face softened, replaced by a quiet, deep focus. She looked at Sienna's pale cheeks, the dark circles of exhaustion under her eyes, and the way her chest struggled for every single breath of clean sea air.

"Where is your family located, child?" Eleanor asked, her voice dropping into a calmer, softer register.

"I do not have a family, ma'am."

"No parents living in the industrial district?"

"No. I was raised in the Saint Jude group home on the east canal until I turned eighteen. I have lived in the site boarding rooms ever since."

"A complete orphan," Eleanor murmured softly.

"Yes, ma'am."

"And you believed marrying my son would provide you with security?"

"I did not ask for his money, ma'am," Sienna said, holding her canvas bag tighter against her ribs. "I did not ask for a villa or a car. I only asked for a child. I wanted someone to belong to."

Alec reached out, his large hand clamping around Sienna's upper arm.

"That is enough, Sienna. Be quiet."

"Take your hand off her arm, Alexander," Eleanor commanded sharply.

Alec pulled his hand back, his jaw clenching hard in irritation.

Eleanor stepped right up to Sienna. She did not show disgust at the dirty gray hoodie or the chemical smell still lingering in Sienna's hair. Instead, she reached out with her manicured hand, gently placing two warm fingers beneath Sienna's chin and lifting her face to the sunlight.

"You have severe bruising along your collarbone, do you not?" Eleanor asked.

"A concrete block hit my shoulder when the ceiling dropped," Sienna admitted quietly.

"And you permitted this foolish boy to drag you onto a speed yacht for two hours without a proper medical transport team?"

"He said we had to arrive at the estate before noon."

Eleanor turned her head toward the two motorized estate carts waiting by the palm trees at the end of the pier.

"Thomas!" Eleanor called out.

The head butler walked swiftly down the gravel path, adjusting his black tie as he approached the dock.

"Yes, Madam Eleanor?"

"Take this girl's bag up to the south wing suite on the second floor of the main mansion," Eleanor ordered. "Contact the estate physician immediately. Tell him to bring a portable oxygen tank, bronchial wash solutions, and fresh burn bandages. Have the kitchen prepare a pot of hot vegetable broth and clean linen."

"The west guest cottage was already opened by the groundskeeper, Mother," Alec interrupted, his voice laced with annoyance. "She can stay there where it is quiet."

"She is your legal wife, Alexander," Eleanor said, turning on him with an icy glare. "She does not sleep in a detached guest cottage like an unwanted vendor. She stays in the main house, in the family wing, where the medical staff can monitor her breathing every two hours through the night."

"I do not need your interference in my private arrangements."

"You brought a wife onto this island without a single telephone call, Alexander. You surrendered the right to complain about my household management the moment you signed that registry."

Eleanor turned back to Sienna, her expression warm and reassuring.

"Go with Thomas, child. Wash the smoke from your skin and get into a clean bed."

Sienna looked at Alec. He was staring out toward the open water, his arms crossed over his chest, his face like a locked iron gate. He did not look back at her once.

"Thank you, ma'am," Sienna said softly to Eleanor.

She turned and followed the butler up the wooden dock toward the waiting cart.

Up on the wide stone terrace overlooking the marina, Julian Sterling stood leaning against the white marble balustrade, holding a tall glass of cold water.

Beside him stood Chloe Sterling, wearing a bright yellow designer sundress, her sunglasses pushed up onto her blonde hair.

"Look at that, Julian," Chloe said with a light, amused laugh, pointing down at the docks. "Big brother just brought home a stray cat from the factory yard."

"That is not a stray cat, Chloe," Julian said, taking a slow sip from his glass as he watched Sienna climb into the estate cart. "That is the girl who pulled Alec out of sector four."

"Genevieve is landing at five o'clock with her father," Chloe said, turning to look at her brother with a wicked grin. "The entire island is going to catch fire before dinner."

"Then find a good seat on the terrace," Julian replied quietly, setting his glass down on the marble railing. "Because Alec just started a war he cannot finish.”

Genevieve snatched the vanity case straight out of his grip with a sharp snap of her wrist. "Are you out of your mind? I am Alexander's future wife. My belongings go into the master villa on the south bluff. Where is he? He went completely silent for four days after that explosion. My father and I have been calling the harbor office nonstop. You know that better than anyone on this island."Alec stood behind his heavy desk inside the north study. He had already showered, washed the black soot from his neck, and changed into a clean dark blue dress shirt. The white medical tape on his forehead was clean, but his face was rigid and exhausted."Genevieve has been calling my mobile phone every ten minutes since noon," Julian said, pacing across the hardwood floor. "She thinks you are meeting her at the south landing pad with flowers.""Let her think what she wants. The engagement is finished.""Our deep-water port permits are tied to her father's signatures, Alec. Do you understand how state politics operate?""Richard Mayor needs our shipping infrastructure just as much as we need his municipal approvals. He will not pull the port agreements.""He wi

She clutched the rough strap with both hands."You said we were just traveling to the island.""I said we had business to finish before the boat touches the pier."Alec tossed his suit jacket onto the leather couch. "Sign on the dotted line, Mr. Sterling. Right beside the red mark."The city magistrate did not look up from his metal desk. He was an older man with thick glasses resting on his nose, smelling of stale black coffee and dry paper. The small room at the edge of the industrial town had yellow walls, peeling paint, and a wall clock that made a loud clicking sound every single second.Alec stood over the desk. His tall frame blocked the morning light coming through the dirty blinds. His hair was combed neat, but the white bandage was still wrapped tight around his forehead. He wore a dark business suit his assistant had brought from the city hours earlier. He looked completely out of place in the dusty government office. He picked up the heavy black pen. His hand did not tremble, but his fingers pressed into the plastic casing until his skin turned white."Is this valid right now?" Alec asked, his voice low, flat, and dry."The second both of you finish signing," the magistrate said, stam

"She needs absolute bed rest.""I do not care about the medical cost. Put everything on my private account. Make sure she gets the best care available."Alec stood at the edge of the white curtain in the field medical tent, his forehead covered with clean white bandages. His chest was sore, but his eyes were sharp, dark, and fixed entirely on the small hospital bed.Sienna looked tiny under the heavy blankets. Her face was pale as paper, her lips dry and cracked. The baggy work clothes she always wore on the site had been cut away, replaced by a simple hospital gown that rested loosely on her shoulders.Alec walked closer, his boots clicking softly on the floor. The three surviving workers she had dragged out before going back for Alec stood near the end of the bed, their faces bruised, their hands shaking with nervous energy."You saved every single one of us, young lady," Miller, the oldest worker, said, his voice cracking with emotion. "The doctors told us you pulled three of us ou
