Chapter 22

Liora's POV

“The Lord is ready to accept all who come to him. He is ready to welcome them into his fold. Abandon your ways...“

I zone out the rest of the preacher's words as I walk into the little church in my community—a place I swore never to return to. But it's inevitable. I'm doing this for Aunt. I know she won't be happy, but I'm willing to take her anger as long as she's alive.

Evren walks beside me, his presence providing a sense of comfort and protection.

He's as stubborn as a she-goat. I told him to stay back, but he told me his baby was going nowhere without him, and in less than two hours, his jet had been prepared for us to take the three-hour journey to Salt Lake City.

Even when I told him to stay in the car while I alerted my parents that I was here, he still followed me in.

Not that I'm complaining... much.

“Liora?“ Mom’s whisper meets my ears. In no time, I’m engulfed in a warm yet unfamiliar embrace. How can my mother’s embrace seem so strange to me?

“Mothe

But seeing her father act worse than my grandfather made me throw all respect out of the window. That’s if I even had any to begin with. Two of my guards bound down the small hallway leading to the preacher’s stand and take the corner to the half-open door where her father is preparing to come from. Chapter 24 Liora's POV The pillow underneath my head is softer than the one on the plane, making me realize my bed has been changed. My eyes flutter open, the first thing greeting me being the blinding lights in Evren's room—well, my room too. “Ughh,” I groan, placing a hand over my eyes to shield them. Who the hell sleeps with the lights on? Although I slept more comfortably than I have in the past three days since Aunt's incident— Oh my God. Aunt. I jump out of bed, flinging the duvet carelessly to the side. My feet meet my slippers as I make haste toward the table in the corner to grab my purse and return to the hospital. Damn, Liora. How could you be so stupid? Your aunt is fighting for her life, and you're here sleeping comfortably like life is a cloud. I'm so stupid. And whoever put me in bed is even more stupid. The door swings open before my hand can reach the doorknob, almost hitting me in the face. Evren walks in—shirtless, with black sweatpants dangling off his hip

Chapter 25 Liora's POV “What the hell were you doing, girl?” Arianna asks from where she's sitting beside me. We are in the waiting room at the hospital, unable to see Aunt now because the doctors are carrying out some procedures on her. Why is she asking me the same question he did? It’s obvious what I was doing. “Uh, you said to use feminine wiles to charm my man. I did just that.” I realize my words too late. She smiles, wiggling her brows. “Your man, huh? Cute.” God, give me strength. I can’t deal with this girl this afternoon. “......” She turns toward me, making strict eye contact. “Tell me something, girl. What exactly did you do? The feminine wiles you used.” “I puckered my lips like this.” I demonstrate. “That was after applying lip gloss to make it shinier? I can’t remember what you said it was for. I also winked like this, and then I—” “Enough, Liora! Geez.” I sit with a bright smile, hoping for her to praise me for a job well done. “So... rate my performance on a

I hope it's not Aunt.A relieved sigh escapes me when I notice it isn't. However, my curiosity doesn't let my mind rest, especially after seeing it's a text message from an unknown number."Hi. I'm sure it's because of Ronan's threats. Evren doesn't look like a man who would take vacations—much less in the middle of the year.“Ughhh. Why can't I sleep?“ I groan, sitting up on the bed and pulling the duvet angrily over me. It's all his fault. When we got here late in the evening, I told him to give me my own room. He agreed! The idiot agreed. How dare he? I expected him to argue and carry me to bed, where I had gotten used to his scent hitting my nostrils and giving me a sense of calm and protection through the night. We haven't cuddled yet, but I was a few steps away from initiating that. 1Liora's POV“Miss Wilder, I'm afraid we no longer need your services for the Patterson's family. Mrs Patterson is pregnant!“ That sentence alone feels like a truck crushing my soul. I gulp, my heart splitting into tiny bits. I am happy for them. After trying for seven years, they have finally conceived their own child. But then, this means our contract is void.In moments like these, I'm tempted to ask God, why? There was just one week left to the insemination. All documents have been signed and processed. All medical exams conducted. I was supposed to bear the Patterson's heir for the sum of $500,000. Dang it. That money was supposed to change my life. With aunt's cancer in the first stage, Corinne–my younger sister's– college starting next month and my six-year-old Selina about to get into the first grade, that money was very necessary. Now I'm back to square one. Tears fill my eyes, which I struggle to blink back, trying not to show how hurt I am by the declaration. I am not s

If an employee of the Valescas dies in the office, it won't end well with anyone in this city. I wonder what could have happened. In my head, I'm singing a happy song, reminiscing about the moment between Evren and me earlier. But then he's always like that. The moment the elevator opens, the sight before my eyes has my senses heightening, my heart plummeting to my feet. The paramedics were headed for Evren's office? Could something have happened to Levi? He's clumsy, so it wouldn't be surprising. But as I see the person on the sofa, coughing while they try to attend to him, my heart loses it.Evren is pale, his lips blue, an

His hatred for Ronan extends way back before mine. But I might surpass him soon. Hell, I think I’ve done that after last night. “You think I didn’t want to do more? If it was left to me, his mother would be planning his funeral right now. Unfortunately, I just can’t end him, no matter how much I want to.” I can envision him rolling his eyes on the other end. “You're so lax after this guy threatens your woman, Ren. I know you care for her beyond the fact that she's pregnant. Don't mess things up.” Before I can say a word, two beeps meet my ears. Idiot hung up on me. My eyes stray toward the bar, the desire to have a taste of the alcohol there and see if it really works, as they say, spiking. I just need something to calm my nerves. Without a second thought, I move toward the bar, pull out a gla
