"What is this," Ethan said quietly, and the quiet was worse than shouting.

He turned the phone toward her, screen still glowing with Vanessa's message, like he was presenting evidence in a trial Amelia hadn't known she was standing in.

He still doesn't know about the baby. Keep it that way until after the divorce is final.

"I don't know," Amelia said, and it came out shaking because it was, for once, completely true. "I've never seen that message before in my life."

"It's your phone."

"I know how it looks"

"Do you." His voice had dropped to something flat and cold, the voice of a man who had already decided the ending and was only waiting for her to catch up to it. "Whose baby, Amelia? Mine? Is that why you were so insistent on separate bedrooms the last two months because you were already carrying someone else's child and needed the excuse?"

The words landed like slaps, each one aimed at a version of her that didn't exist a stranger wearing her face, who had apparently built an entire architecture of lies before Amelia had even opened her eyes in this bed.

"I'm not pregnant," she said. "I don't know who Vanessa is. I don't know whose baby that is. I don't know anything about a divorce, Ethan, and if you actually looked at me right now instead of at three months of evidence, you'd see that I'm telling the truth."

Something in her voice must have carried more conviction than she meant it to, because Ethan's jaw tightened not in anger this time, but in something closer to unease.

"You've never once, in three years, admitted you don't remember something," he said slowly. "You lie beautifully, Amelia. You always have. But you don't usually forget your own lines."

"Maybe I hit my head," she said. It wasn't entirely untrue. Somewhere, in some other body, she probably had.

He studied her for a long moment, the phone still in his hand, thumb hovering over the message like he wanted to throw it across the room. Then, abruptly, he pocketed it.

"I'm keeping this," he said. "And I'm calling Dr. Reyes. If you're pregnant, I want to know before Vanessa decides to tell me herself, on her own terms, in the middle of some benefit dinner where I can't react the way I'd like to."

"Who is Vanessa?" Amelia asked again, because it seemed important, and because some instinct told her the answer mattered more than anything else in the room.

Ethan's expression did something complicated old grief, old anger, something almost like tenderness curdled by time into resentment.

"She was supposed to be my wife," he said. "Before you."

He left before Amelia could ask anything else, the door closing behind him with the same controlled quiet as before, and she was alone again in a bedroom that belonged to a woman who had apparently been carrying on an affair, hiding a pregnancy, and drafting divorce papers all in the three days before a stranger from Brooklyn woke up wearing her skin.

Great, Amelia thought. Fantastic. Not only am I the villain of a novel. I'm the villain of a soap opera too.

She found Rosa in the hallway a few minutes later, hovering near Noah's door with the particular stillness of someone who had heard raised voices and was deciding whether to intervene.

"Rosa," Amelia said, and the housekeeper turned, wary. "Can I ask you something? And can you answer honestly, even if it's ugly?"

Rosa's eyes flicked toward the closed bedroom door behind Amelia, then back. "That depends on the question, ma'am."

"Am I pregnant?"

Whatever Rosa had braced herself for, it wasn't that. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again. "I wouldn't know that, Mrs. Whitmore. That's not something you'd have told me."

"Would I have told anyone?"

Rosa hesitated, and in that hesitation, Amelia read an entire year of secrets. "There's a name in your address book," she said finally, reluctant. "A doctor. Not Dr. Reyes someone else. A private clinic, on the Upper West Side. You went there twice last month. I only know because I drove you both times. You told Mr. Whitmore you were at Pilates."

The floor seemed to tilt again.

"Do you have the address?"

"Ma'am, I don't think"

"Please, Rosa. I know I don't deserve your trust. I know what I've apparently done to this family. But I need to understand what's happening to me, and you're the only person in this house who might actually help me instead of watching me drown."

Something in Rosa's face softened, just slightly the same flicker of surprise Amelia had noticed the day before, when kindness had come out of her mouth instead of cruelty.

"I'll write it down for you," Rosa said quietly. "But Amelia if you really don't remember going there, I think you should know something else first."

"What?"

Rosa glanced down the hallway, lowering her voice to barely above a whisper. "The receptionist called you by a different name both times. Not Whitmore."

Amelia's pulse quickened. "What name?"

"Bennett," Rosa said. "She called you Miss Bennett."

For a moment, neither of them moved. Somewhere down the hall, Noah's door creaked open, and his small voice called out, uncertain, "Amelia? Is it cookie time now?"

But Amelia barely heard him.

Bennett. The name from the hospital paper in her day planner. The name Margaret had scrawled a warning about in her own handwriting. The name of the Whitmore family's biggest rival, apparently now stitched into the real Amelia Whitmore's secret life at some clinic on the Upper West Side under an alias no one in this house was supposed to know.

Whatever the real Amelia Whitmore had been planning before she disappeared and left Amelia Carter holding the pieces, it was bigger, and far more dangerous, than a simple affair.

And somewhere out there, Vanessa already knew exactly what it was.

The photograph trembled in Amelia's hand as she stared at the tiny wrist wrapped in a blue blanket, at the small crescent shaped mark just above where a baby's pulse would flutter. She looked down at her own wrist without meaning to. The same mark was there, pale and small, the kind of thing she'd have dismissed her whole life as an ordinary birthmark if she hadn't just been staring at its twin in a thirty-year-old photograph. "Ethan," she said quietly. "Look at this." He crossed the room in three strides and went very still when he saw it, his eyes moving between the photograph and Amelia's wrist with the focus of a man cataloguing evidence for a trial. "That's not proof of anything," Margaret said quickly, too quickly, from the doorway. "Birthmarks aren't unique. Half the babies born that decade probably had something similar." "Then why do you look like you've seen a ghost, Mother?" Ethan asked, not unkindly, but firmly. Margaret's composure finally cracked all the way

"Cousins," Amelia repeated, the word tasting strange and dangerous in her mouth. "You're saying we're related." "I'm saying," Vanessa said, smiling like she was savoring every second of this, "that my mother was Eleanor Bennett's younger sister. Which makes me a Bennett by blood, the same as you except I never had to be given away to find that out." The words landed like a slap dressed up in silk. Amelia felt Ethan go rigid beside her, his hand hovering near her back like he wasn't sure yet whether to comfort her or brace for a fight. "That's enough, Vanessa," Ethan said. "You didn't come here for a family reunion." "Didn't I?" Vanessa's eyes flicked toward him, softening in a way that made Amelia's stomach turn. "I came because I care about this family, Ethan. More than you'll ever believe. I simply thought Amelia deserved to know the truth before Daniel Bennett's lawyers show up with a claim of their own." "What claim?" Amelia asked. Vanessa's smile sharpened. "Eleanor's

"Eleanor Bennett," Amelia repeated slowly. "The woman who died in a car accident. Your mother's old friend." Ethan set the phone down on the counter like it had suddenly grown too heavy to hold. "That's what the lab tech told my driver. Someone ordered a comparative DNA panel using archived tissue samples from Eleanor Bennett's original medical file, cross-referenced against a sample logged under your name three weeks ago." "Why would anyone compare me to a dead woman?" "I don't know," Ethan said. "But my mother clearly does." They found Margaret in the east sitting room twenty minutes later, staring out the window with a glass of sherry she hadn't touched, looking older than Amelia had seen her look all day. "Mother," Ethan said, closing the door behind them. "Eleanor Bennett." Margaret's shoulders stiffened, but she didn't turn around. "I don't see why that name concerns either of you." "Someone ordered a DNA comparison between Amelia and Eleanor," Ethan said. "Using A

"Paternity," Amelia repeated, the word landing strange in her mouth. "For whose child?" "That's what I intend to find out," Ethan said, and for the first time since she'd woken up in this life, his coldness wasn't aimed at her. It had turned outward, toward whoever had used his wife's name like a weapon. "The clinic wouldn't release the requesting party's details over the phone. I have someone driving over there now." Margaret had gone very quiet, her earlier composure replaced by something brittle, her cream gloved hands pressed flat against the marble counter like she needed it to stay upright. "Margaret," Ethan said, noticing. "You look ill. Sit down." "I'm fine," Margaret said, too quickly. "I should go. I have a luncheon." "You just said you came to talk to me." "It can wait." She was already moving toward the door, and Amelia watched her go with the growing certainty that Margaret Whitmore knew exactly whose paternity test this was, and was far more frightened of th

  • The Sweetest Stepmom   Chapter 3: Miss Bennett

Amelia stared at Rosa for a long moment, the name echoing in her skull. Bennett. "Amelia?" Noah's voice again, closer now, tugging at the hem of her robe. "Cookies?" She looked down at him at the small, hopeful face that had, twenty minutes ago, still been flinching away from her and something in her chest steadied. Whatever mess the real Amelia Whitmore had left behind, whatever secret was tangled up in a fake name and a Bennett clinic file, it could wait exactly as long as it took to keep a promise to a five-year-old. "Cookies," she confirmed. "Give me ten minutes to find the kitchen. I'm still learning my way around." Noah's brow furrowed at that ,a woman who'd lived in this mansion for three years, suddenly lost in her own house ,but he didn't push it. Kids, Amelia was learning fast, accepted strange things more easily than adults did, as long as the strange thing came with cookies attached. Rosa guided her down two flights of stairs into a kitchen so large it could hav
