Chapter 1

Author: Claw Machine
From the moment I was born, I understood one thing with absolute clarity—I was poor.

I was an orphan, hardly getting enough to eat, never dressed warm enough, buried under a mountain of debt just to stay in school. No one could figure out how I managed to keep going.

Of course, that only proved one thing—I was a genius at studying.

Then, something changed. An elite academy opened its doors to top scorers, offering full tuition waivers and generous scholarships.

Holding the acceptance letter, I turned it over, examined it from every angle, and nodded in satisfaction.

Good thing I was smart.

The city's most elite high school, Ace High, reached out to me.

They made a sincere offer—if I enrolled, I wouldn't have to worry about tuition. More importantly, I'd have a stable environment to study.

The school administrator sighed with regret. "You're a gifted student. It would be a waste to let that talent go unnoticed."

There was something unspoken in his words.

I knew this elite academy had a bad reputation. Every year, special admissions students like me came and went, swallowed whole by the system.

If I went in, I might meet the same fate.

I said confidently, "Don't worry, I'm not like the others."

I was only in it for the scholarship money—and the school's garbage dump.

Just here for the cash.

"Naïve girls don't survive here. I'd advise you to be careful."

The red-haired girl sitting in front of me turned around, giving me a cold stare.

I hesitated, then pointed at her drink bottle. "Are you gonna finish that?"

"...What?"

She followed my gaze to the empty bottle in her hand.

The world had kissed me with hardship, so I must get something as compensation.

Another bottle added to my collection.

Satisfied, I hoisted my bulging sack onto my back and walked out.

"What's that new special admissions girl doing?"

"I think she's got a collecting habit. She's been picking up bottles all day."

"Oh my god, that's so weird!"

I strolled away without a care.

These rich kids, untouched by reality—did they even know what was inside that sack?

Eight dollars.

A whole eight dollars!

Most days, I wandered around the school's garbage dump. The place had treasures.

Luxury goods, casually discarded, made the dump feel more like an exclusive recycling center.

As I dug through the pile, I looked up and locked eyes with a boy. He looked lean, pale, and well-kept.

His clothes were simple but clean. Seeing me, he frowned slightly.

I suddenly felt that my sack was exposed.

Even in this niche survival game, there was competition.

I clutched my sack tightly. "Don't go poking around here."

He raised a brow. "Did you write your name on it?"

...I hadn't.

Writing my name on a dump wasn't exactly dignified. And I still had my dignity.

I ignored him, grabbed my finds, and left.

He followed.

Soon, we both ended up at the same scrap shop.

The owner greeted us with a knowing smile. We were both regular customers, clearly.

That was how I found out his name was Wesley Chance. Like me, he was a special admissions student.

The look on his face was… complicated.

I understood why.

A moment ago, we were competitors. Now, we were just two people in the same sinking boat.

His eyes landed on the patches on my sleeves.

"You..."

I shrugged. "Need patches? I've got ten. Two dollars each."

"Forget it… Sorry," he muttered, "I didn't know things were that rough for you."

I sniffed, putting on a solemn face. "It's fine."

After a brief silence, he handed me his sack.

"Put it on her tab," he told the shop owner.

I was touched. "You're a good guy."

I was poor, but I was also undeniably brilliant.

Exams didn't scare me.

In every city-wide test, I ranked first. Wesley's name wasn't far behind, always within the top ten.

What made it more satisfying? The school name listed next to our names.

It stood out, sharp against the others.

The principal was thrilled. He called us in, beaming with pride, showering us with praise.

With his reputation soaring, he now walked into meetings with his head held high.

Before we left, he pressed an envelope, thick with a wad of dollar bills, into our hands.

With Bruce's spectacular transformation, jaws dropped everywhere. It took the entire school a moment to process what had happened.…Wesley sat beside me, organizing his notes. I hummed a tune, calculating how to help them solidify their knowledge. Not that it mattered much. Most of them were bound to go abroad anyway.I sighed. Some gaps between people are determined from the moment they are born.Out of nowhere, Wesley spoke. "Cammy, don't you ever get angry?""Huh?"He was referring to that viral post.I chuckled. Why would I care?Opportunities to watch gossip about yourself unfold are rare. I might as well treat it as free advertising.High-energy people don't waste time on self-destruction. They prioritize their own emotions.Wesley studied me. "You really think differently from me."I narrowed my eyes. "Cut the sentimentality, or you're done for.""…"As we left the classroom, I suddenly turned back. "By the way, Wesley, which university are you aiming for?"He

Bruce blushed as he finished his cake. "If I get first place..."He was clearly already lost in his imagination. As the eldest son in his family, he never dared to sit down for a drink with his father. He feared those deep-set eyes, the kind that men spent a lifetime avoiding. Yet, at the same time, his father's praise was the one thing he longed for the most.I knew exactly what he was thinking and cut him off coldly. "What you need to do right now is focus."Shawn laughed, reckless and arrogant."You? First place? Hah! Keep dreaming!"I nodded. See, Shawn was at least realistic. The next second, Shawn straightened his back."I'm the one who has what it takes to be number one!"I remained expressionless."Alright, alright." I made a stop gesture. "Look at Wesley. He's calm and composed. Learn from him."Wesley turned to look at me, as if genuinely analyzing my words. Then, with a perfectly straight face, he said, "I believe we are the champions."…When the results came

She smelled nice. When she spoke, her hair swayed slightly with the movement of her body."Juggling three at once..."I paused for a moment, considering the gravity of the statement. Then I looked at the young lady before me, full of indignation at my choices. Given her own lackluster academic performance despite all her efforts, I extended a warm invitation."Hey, do you want to be the fourth?"Yvette was stunned speechless.…In the lounge, the five of us sat together.Wesley quietly flipped through a book. Bruce and Shawn exchanged bewildered glances. Yvette sat in silence for a long time before finally speaking, her voice tinged with disbelief."So, you're saying... you four, two teaching, two learning?"The table, piled high with study materials, practice exams, and problem sets, was undeniable proof that her statement was entirely correct.Bruce scratched his head. "What else did you think we were doing, playing poker?"Silence. Yvette closed her eyes for a moment, as

I tackled both schoolwork and tutoring with equal determination. Whatever I learned that day, I digested, mastered, and immediately drilled into Bruce and Shawn, whether they liked it or not."Only the strong deserve to hear what I have to teach."Wesley chuckled. "Alright, strong one, slow down. They're not you. Too much and they'll drop dead."I took a closer look. Bruce and Shawn were pale, their eyes dull, dark circles heavy under them. They looked half alive.I had truly made them learn.Feeling satisfied, I sighed. "See? This is the essence of studying. Only those who have truly learned understand."Wesley was silent for a moment, then gave me a thumbs-up.…One day, after a private lesson, I was humming a tune on my way home when I got cornered in an alley.A girl stood at the front, arms crossed, staring at me coldly.I recognized her instantly. When it came to that post on the school's forum, I still had no idea who had secretly taken an awful photo of me and slapped on such a shameless title.I hated whoever did that.Wesley glanced at me. "I already took the post down. The user is banned from activity for the next 365 years."I was stunned.Three. Hundred. Sixty-five. Years. They wouldn't be able to post again until their next, next, next life. His voice was calm. "It was a bad influence. As part of the school's disciplinary committee, I have the authority to handle these things."I gave him a sincere thumbs-up. "You are the man."…Bruce and Shawn had finally reached a consensus. They were both fully prepared to put me on trial. Technically, I hadn't done anything bad, but in a way, what I did was… questionable.I sat down across from them, ready to negotiate.Bruce's face was dark. Shawn's was green.Wesley stood far away, watching with that usual faint smile of his.Behind me, there was no one.I took a dee
