CHAPTER FIVE
SERENA'S POVIt had been a week since the incident, and Luna Emily had been of tremendous support to me. Some of the pack members were starting to accept me as one of their own, but to be honest, that one week felt like an eternity. Adjusting to the pack's way of life was challenging. I mean, going from being a Luna to an ordinary wolf in the pack was not easy, but it was my reality now and I had to live with it, without complaints"Hey, Best" Valerie, my coworker and newfound best friend said as she walked into the bar counterYes, I managed to get a job at a bar, the very first place I visited upon arriving at this pack. The particular bar where that perverted asswipe Picked and took advantage of me when I was drunkYou might be wondering why I chose to work there. Well, the reason is because I want to ensure that he faces the consequences of his actions. I needed him to pay for what he had done to me and I believed that he might come back someday, that's when I planned to execute my perfectly laid out planI had been asking around if anyone knew him, but I hadn't received much of a positive response"You look pale and stressed," Valeria observed, giving me a concerned once-over. "Your face and feet seem swollen too," she added."Yeah, I woke up feeling weak this morning, but I'll be fine," I replied, continuing to arrange the glasses that were already arranged. "I'll just give myself plenty of rest when I get home today.""You need to get a check-up, don't be ignorant of your health" she advised and I nodded"Yes boss" I responded playfully and we both laughedon my way back from work, I decided to visit the pack's hospital, but when I got there, there was no doctor to attend to me"What? Is that even supposed to...""Don't get ahead of yourself young lady, you do not have the right to complain when I say there is no doctor available to attend to you today, so come back tomorrow. Just so you know, you're still a rogue, and my suspicions of you aren't cleared yet" a nurse said when I tried to express my dissatisfaction"I can't come back tomorrow, because I would be working round the clock, that's twenty four hours straight, and I don't care if you still suspect me, because it doesn't matter" I counteredShe creased her brows and said "Then you come the day after tomorrow, why do you need to see a doctor anyway, if you're not ill?" This was really getting on my nerves, but I didn't want to get on anybody's bad side, it would only make them hate me more than they already did"I am not Ill Miss, I just want a check-up, and this is the only time I have to spare" if only there was another hospital, I would have been out of this place a long time ago. This bitch didn't even respond to me, she just walked past me. How dare she?No one had ever walked out on me whenever I was talking to them. This was new and I could not believe it. I just wasn't used to it and it hurt really bad. It made me remember my past, which was just a few weeks ago, but it's still my past, yeah? If only Jake wasn't a jackass.... Sigh! I don't even want to talk about that now"Hey, I wasn't done talking" I said, as soon as I caught up with her"Well, I was. Now please stop bothering me, as you can see, I'm working""The nerve of you speaking to me in that manner" I didn't know when that slipped out, now she was going to make fun of me"Oh! Interesting, who were you again?" She said mockingly and I rolled my eyes"Sigh! Um...since there isn't any doctor who could attend to me, then you should, I believe it wouldn't be that hard to run some tests on me, I mean, you're a nurse, you guys know a bit about those things" I suggested and she smirked"I am also busy, come back TOMORROW, what part of that sentence do you not understand huh? You're bothering me, please go" Holy moly, why am I always unlucky? Why do I always meet the wrong people, the mean and bad minded ones? I tell you, this makes life really frustrating"Why are you this mean?" I asked frustratingly and she bursted into a wild laughter“Mean? Did…did you just say mean?“ She said in hitches whilst still laughing“Ignore her miss, Doctor Frederick is done with the surgery, he will see you now” Another lady said as she held my hand and pulled me towards the direction of the doctor's officeThe mean Lady was still laughing like a psycho and till date, I didn't know the reason“Here” she said, pointing at a door and I thanked her“Thank you” she nodded and leftI knocked and pushed the door open“Good evening doc” I greeted with a smile“Good evening miss, have a seat” he responded, then gestured for me to sit, which I didn't hesitate to do, as my legs were already weak from standing for quite a long time“So…how may I help you?““Uh…First of all, my name is Serena Harvard, and lately I have been feeling weak, and sometimes dizzy look, my legs and foot are kind of swollen too, so I came to run some tests to know what is wrong with me, or maybe my body is just going through some biological changes” I explained and he nodded“Alright Miss Harvard, it's true that your body might be going through some biological changes, as all these are symptoms of pregnancy. I am Doctor Frederick by the way” Did he just say pregnancy? That couldn't be possible right? I mean, I was barren, I couldn't reproduce, so what was he talking about? Argh! Serena, you're thinking too far, he only said they were symptoms, it isn't confirmed yet. My subconscious mind cautioned as my whole body was getting tensed up“However, you might just be running a fever, but let's get the test done, shall we?“ He asked and I noddedFew minutes later, the test results were handed over to me. I was tensed as I didn't know what to expectI opened the first one, and yes I was running a feverI wasn't rejoicing neither was I disappointed, then I opened the second one, and indeed I was pregnant“Goodness gracious” I muttered in disbelief, this could be a trick, my eyes could be playing pranks on me“Congratulations, you're becoming a mother in nine months” the doctor said with a wide smile plastered on his face, but it soon disappeared when he noticed that I wasn't smiling“Um…you don't look happy, is everything alright?“ He asked and I shook my head negatively“No, everything is not alright, are you sure that I am pregnant? Like, can this be trusted? I mean, is this a prank? Did Jake ask you to do this? Or was it Clarissa?“ I asked so many questions in a row, and I could see confusion boldly written on his face“Who are those? Are they after you or something?“ He asked, sounding very concerned“No, you don't understand, I am barren, I can't be pregnant” I said and he cocked his brows“No you're not, do you want an ultrasound?“ He asked and I nodded almost immediately“Alright, but what makes you think you're barren anyway?“ Uh…didn't he already know my story? Because it wasn't something hidden, even little cubs knew that I was an exiled Luna due to my barrenness, they all know my story like the back of their palmsDon't ask me how, I also don't know“You don't know? Don't you recognize me?“ I asked “No I don't, you can't expect me to know everyone in the pack” he responded and I nodded, I didn't have the luxury of time to explain shit to him so I just asked if we could proceed to the ultra scan“Oh my! How did I almost forget, we can only do an Ultrasound, so that you can hear the heartbeat of your baby, you won't be able to see the baby, since it's an early stage” he explained and I just stared at him“Why? I want to see the baby for myself” I responded, after what seemed like a staring competition between the both of us"You can't, because we're Werewolves" he simply said and I sighed“Alright then, I'm ready” I affirmed, but before we could proceed any further, the door swung open. Guess who it wasChapter Thirty Nine First Person Perspective Jake I was sitting on the big chair near the fire. Alpha Robert was beside me. He was drinking from his silver cup, laughing. I laughed too. His guards stood by the door, silent. The room was warm, and outside it was dark and cold. “You saw his face?” Alpha Robert said with a loud laugh. “He looked like a scared rabbit!” I laughed harder. “He really thought he could escape!” We clinked our cups together. It was fun to watch that fool try to run with his little family. He didn’t even make it far. He got caught right at the edge of the forest. Robert shook his head, grinning. “And did you see the look on the Serena’s face? That was—” “Priceless!” I finished for him. We both laughed again. It felt good. I hadn’t laughed like this in days. But then something started to bother me. I rubbed my chin and looked into the fire. “Hmm…” I said. “What?” Robert asked. I sat up straighter. “That man… Jeremy… something is not ri
Chapter Thirty Eight First Person’s Perspective Reed I sat in the corner of my dark, cold cell. The floor was hard under me. The walls smelled like mold and old water. The air was damp. My body still hurt. My back burned from the whip. Every move made it worse. My hands were full of cuts and dried blood. But I did not care. Serena and Liam were alive. Caleb said they were near the north border. That meant I had a chance. A real chance. I could get them back. I could hold my son again. I could tell Serena that I never gave up. I closed my eyes. Just two more nights. Then I run. Then I fight. Then I take them back. No matter what happens. I don’t care if I die. I opened my eyes and looked at the food in front of me. Old bread. Cold meat. It smelled bad. Like it had been there for days. I didn’t eat it. I needed to stay sharp. If I got sick now, I would lose everything. I pushed the plate away. The next day, I acted weak. I walked slowly. I let my shoulders hang
Chapter Thirty Seven — Not Broken Yet Dual POV: Serena and Jeremy Serena The wagon stopped. The wheels creaked as they came to a halt, grinding against the dry earth. Dust floated into the air, dancing in the sunlight that filtered through the tiny holes in the wooden walls of the wagon. The sudden silence was worse than the rattling noise we had heard all morning. I held Liam’s hand tighter, even though my wrists were tied. The rope had rubbed the skin raw. My arms ached from holding onto him, but I refused to let go. I couldn’t. The door opened with a loud metal clang. A guard climbed up and yanked me by the arm. I stumbled, my feet barely catching the step before I hit the ground. Liam jumped down right behind me. He didn’t cry, but his little face was pale, his lips pressed into a tight line. The sun hit my eyes. For a moment, I blinked against the bright light. It felt too warm, too peaceful, for what we were walking into. Then I saw it. A big
Chapter Thirty Six — The Old Cell Reed My eyes opened slowly. My head hurt. My chest burned. My body felt like it had been crushed under a mountain. Everything felt broken, like I had been hit by a truck again and again. The first thing I saw was the wall. The same grey wall. Cold stone. Rough and cracked in places. The same corner I had stared at once, long ago, when I was younger. Then I knew. I had been here before. The cell was small. There was no bed, no chair, no blanket. Only hard ground. The walls were damp with wetness, like they cried in silence. The air smelled bad, like blood, sweat, and pain that had stayed too long. There were chains hanging from one side of the wall, rusted and sharp. A small window near the top let in weak light, but it wasn’t enough. That window was too small to crawl through, no matter how desperate someone got. This was the prison under the old Dark Heart barracks I knew it well. Too well. I groaned as I tried to sit up. My bac
Chapter Thirty Five — Peace Never Lasts Serena “Mommy.” He was not just calling out to me, he was crying. It was a call for help. A sound full of fear. A sound no mother wants to hear. I opened my eyes fast. My heart was beating so hard. I jumped to my feet, grabbed the thin blanket off my legs, and ran out of the small shelter we had built with sticks and cloth. “Liam!” I shouted. “What happened?” He was standing just outside. His little face was pale. His eyes were wide with fear. He pointed with a shaking hand. “Men… so many men,” he whispered. “They came from the woods.” My heart stopped. I couldn’t breathe for a second. Jeremy was already outside. He had heard Liam too. He stood in front of us now, growling low. His hands were shaking but strong. He looked into the trees. Then I saw him. Jake. He stepped out from the shadows like a nightmare. His eyes were cold. His face was tight with anger. He stood tall and proud, like he owned the world. Behind him
Chapter Twenty Four Third Person’s Perspective The door slammed behind Jake as he walked out into the cold rain, an evil smile tugged at his lips “Soon, Serena, very soon” Inside the quiet house, miles away, Serena shifted on the bed, holding her stomach. Her breath was uneven, her hands trembling as another sharp pain shot through her lower belly. She had been feeling strange all day, tightness, pressure, something she couldn’t explain. But now… it was worse. “Jeremy?” she called out softly. Her voice was weak. Jeremy walked into the room holding a plate of rice and chicken. “You didn’t eat lunch. Try something now. Just a little.” Serena shook her head. “I… I don’t feel good.” She closed her eyes. “My stomach… it hurts. Bad.” Jeremy put the plate down fast. “What kind of pain? Like cramps?” She nodded slowly. “But stronger… deeper. Like the baby’s trying to come out.” Jeremy’s heart jumped. He stepped closer. “That’s not possible. You’re only eight months. One m
