Chapter Two
SERENA'S POVThe loud bang I heard, made me sit up with an impulseI looked around and found no threat. I had been unconscious for who knows how long. My head hurted badly but I didn't realize it until I became calm and was sure there was no threat around meThere were lots of bruises all over my body, and they all hurt, coupled with the memory of what happened yesterday or the day before, I had no idea, it hurt me moreI tried to get up but couldn't, and had no clue on what to doI even tried calling for help, but my throat was soar, even if it wasn't, it was ridiculous trying to call for help in the woods"Argh!" I winced in pain and frustration, then I remembered I had some ointments in my luggage"Thank the moon goddess, my luggage was hung on my shoulders, who knows where it would have been by now" I said with a chuckleI applied the ointment, but my scratches didn't heal, and that got me worried sickI could remember when I tried to mind Link my mom, but it didn't work, I also tried tapping into Jake's emotions, that still didn't work, I also remembered trying to wolf out , when I was falling off the cliff, but I couldn't, and now this?"Could it be that....no, no that can't be possible, it's just my feelings getting the better of me" I said trying to shove off my thoughts Then I laid back to rest, but it seemed the moon goddess had other plans"Grrr!" The sound of a wolf echoed in my earsTurning towards it's direction, I was wowed, it was huge, had sea blue eyes, and it's furs where as dark as the nightI could tell he was a male, an Alpha blood, just by it's structures, and my goodness! it was a sight to beholdI was dazed watching it, until it took one gallant step forward, while I crawled backwardsI guess fear made me forget about my body painsHe moved forward again and I equally moved backwards"Grrr!" It roared again"I...I... I'm begging you, please don't hurt me" I pleaded and moved backwards againWith the next step he took, he was already right in front of me and I just fell flatly to the groundHe sniffed me head to toe, but I just stayed still, ready for the worst, but I was taken aback by his next actionHe licked my bruises and they suddenly began to heal, soon, I was okay I couldn't say thanks, cause in the speed of light, he was goneTHIRD PERSON'S POV"Damn it! Why didn't he just kill her? Why was he helping her?" Clarissa asked no one in particular with a gritted teeth"Hey! Take it easy, she is in the woods, him not terminating her life doesn't mean she would survive, stop taking it too hard on yourself" the witch said, trying to calm her downImmediately Clarissa pushed Serena off the cliff the other day, she went straight to the witch'sThey tracked Serena's movement with the help of the crystal ballThe crystal ball was something only powerful witches possessed, and it was used to see into the past, the future and also the present "Who is that wolf, and what's his identity?" Clarissa asked the witch"How do you expect I Know that? It's not like I've seen him before" She replied"Isn't that why you're a witch? Find out, do I have to tell you everything? Goodness!" Clarissa said almost in a yellThe witch spoke some gibberish words and some incantations, her eyes illuminated and her silk blackish grey hair began floating in the air, without the presence of windAfter some time, the lights disappeared"So...." Clarissa inquired, with a raised eyebrow"Well, I couldn't see his identity, it's hidden, which means he is a very powerful wolf, all I can say, is that he has Alpha blood running through his veins" the witch revealed, making Clarissa sigh"Hhh! That bitch really has to die, that's all I care about" Clarissa said and walked away, all her mind was occupied with, was how to end the life of her sister without it being traced to her"Can't even say goodbye" the witch complainedSERENA'S POVI was walking in the woods all alone, had tried so many times to wolf out, but I couldn'tI had no where to go, and now labeled as a rouge, So I decided to have some rest by a shallow riverJust as I sat down, my stomach grumbled, I looked around and found nothing I could really eat, the whole place was surrounded by trees, they had fruits though, but I couldn't eat thoseSuddenly the idea of fishing popped into my headI was by a pond anyways, I tried thousands of times, but couldn't make a catch, so I gave up tryingThen I took a bath and changed into something I could run comfortably with, cause you never can tell what would make you run In the woodsSuddenly, I began to feel water droplets on my body, it was about to rain and I had nowhere to goThe downpour became harsh, and as if that wasn't enoughI heard the growl of an animal, very close to me, I didn't know what it was, I wasn't ready to knowJust by it growls alone, I knew it was something bigI took to my heels and as though it was waiting for that, it started chasing after me"Holy shit! What in the world is this?" I questioned, as I tilted my head backwardsIt had the structure of a human, had the face of a wolf, and then it had horns, and long sharp clawsI ran as fast as my legs could carry me, but I didn't see the possibility of myself escaping deathI only ran based on my survival instinctJust when I tilted my head to Look towards it, I tripped and fell to the groundIt growled and used one of it's fingers to poke my arm, blood gushed out, but it healed almost immediatelyThe next minute, it's index giant nail was on it's way to my chest, just right at the position of my heartI closed my eyes and submitted myself to deathBlood gushing was the next sound I heard, and I thought I was dead already'surprising how it didn't hurt' I thought"Hey! You can get up now" a masculine voice said and I opened my eyesIt didn't look like the land of the spirits though"Get up before someone else sees you here" he saidI turned right and saw the monster lying lifeless on the groundTurns out it wasn't my blood gushing, and I sighed in relief"Hey! What are you thinking about, I'm trying to save your life and you aren't helping matters" he complained"Where is this place?" I asked"This is the Dark Heart Pack, and you're a rogue, which means you're not allowed here" he responded, like I didn't already know that I was a rogue"Then why bring me to your tent? Why save me from the monster, oh! You want to take me to your Alpha, so that he would cut off my head and add it to his achievement right?" I asked in fear, but made sure to sound carefree, just like a normal rogue would"Will you just stop talking, what if someone hears you, I don't mean to hurt you, seeing you, I already know you're a good wolf, because those monsters are related to the rogues" he said but I just stared at him"Seeing it chasing after you, then I knew you must be different from them, that's why I saved you" he continuedAs though he knew how hungry I was, he offered me a piece of dried meat, I didn't think twice before collecting and devouring it"Thanks" I said and he nodded"Be Careful, if anyone finds out you're here, then both our heads would be rolling on the floor at the Alphas chamber" he warned and I noddedI couldn't trust him, no matter what he said, I didn't plan to spend the night there anyways, what's the worse that could happen?Chapter Thirty Nine First Person Perspective Jake I was sitting on the big chair near the fire. Alpha Robert was beside me. He was drinking from his silver cup, laughing. I laughed too. His guards stood by the door, silent. The room was warm, and outside it was dark and cold. “You saw his face?” Alpha Robert said with a loud laugh. “He looked like a scared rabbit!” I laughed harder. “He really thought he could escape!” We clinked our cups together. It was fun to watch that fool try to run with his little family. He didn’t even make it far. He got caught right at the edge of the forest. Robert shook his head, grinning. “And did you see the look on the Serena’s face? That was—” “Priceless!” I finished for him. We both laughed again. It felt good. I hadn’t laughed like this in days. But then something started to bother me. I rubbed my chin and looked into the fire. “Hmm…” I said. “What?” Robert asked. I sat up straighter. “That man… Jeremy… something is not ri
Chapter Thirty Eight First Person’s Perspective Reed I sat in the corner of my dark, cold cell. The floor was hard under me. The walls smelled like mold and old water. The air was damp. My body still hurt. My back burned from the whip. Every move made it worse. My hands were full of cuts and dried blood. But I did not care. Serena and Liam were alive. Caleb said they were near the north border. That meant I had a chance. A real chance. I could get them back. I could hold my son again. I could tell Serena that I never gave up. I closed my eyes. Just two more nights. Then I run. Then I fight. Then I take them back. No matter what happens. I don’t care if I die. I opened my eyes and looked at the food in front of me. Old bread. Cold meat. It smelled bad. Like it had been there for days. I didn’t eat it. I needed to stay sharp. If I got sick now, I would lose everything. I pushed the plate away. The next day, I acted weak. I walked slowly. I let my shoulders hang
Chapter Thirty Seven — Not Broken Yet Dual POV: Serena and Jeremy Serena The wagon stopped. The wheels creaked as they came to a halt, grinding against the dry earth. Dust floated into the air, dancing in the sunlight that filtered through the tiny holes in the wooden walls of the wagon. The sudden silence was worse than the rattling noise we had heard all morning. I held Liam’s hand tighter, even though my wrists were tied. The rope had rubbed the skin raw. My arms ached from holding onto him, but I refused to let go. I couldn’t. The door opened with a loud metal clang. A guard climbed up and yanked me by the arm. I stumbled, my feet barely catching the step before I hit the ground. Liam jumped down right behind me. He didn’t cry, but his little face was pale, his lips pressed into a tight line. The sun hit my eyes. For a moment, I blinked against the bright light. It felt too warm, too peaceful, for what we were walking into. Then I saw it. A big
Chapter Thirty Six — The Old Cell Reed My eyes opened slowly. My head hurt. My chest burned. My body felt like it had been crushed under a mountain. Everything felt broken, like I had been hit by a truck again and again. The first thing I saw was the wall. The same grey wall. Cold stone. Rough and cracked in places. The same corner I had stared at once, long ago, when I was younger. Then I knew. I had been here before. The cell was small. There was no bed, no chair, no blanket. Only hard ground. The walls were damp with wetness, like they cried in silence. The air smelled bad, like blood, sweat, and pain that had stayed too long. There were chains hanging from one side of the wall, rusted and sharp. A small window near the top let in weak light, but it wasn’t enough. That window was too small to crawl through, no matter how desperate someone got. This was the prison under the old Dark Heart barracks I knew it well. Too well. I groaned as I tried to sit up. My bac
Chapter Thirty Five — Peace Never Lasts Serena “Mommy.” He was not just calling out to me, he was crying. It was a call for help. A sound full of fear. A sound no mother wants to hear. I opened my eyes fast. My heart was beating so hard. I jumped to my feet, grabbed the thin blanket off my legs, and ran out of the small shelter we had built with sticks and cloth. “Liam!” I shouted. “What happened?” He was standing just outside. His little face was pale. His eyes were wide with fear. He pointed with a shaking hand. “Men… so many men,” he whispered. “They came from the woods.” My heart stopped. I couldn’t breathe for a second. Jeremy was already outside. He had heard Liam too. He stood in front of us now, growling low. His hands were shaking but strong. He looked into the trees. Then I saw him. Jake. He stepped out from the shadows like a nightmare. His eyes were cold. His face was tight with anger. He stood tall and proud, like he owned the world. Behind him
Chapter Twenty Four Third Person’s Perspective The door slammed behind Jake as he walked out into the cold rain, an evil smile tugged at his lips “Soon, Serena, very soon” Inside the quiet house, miles away, Serena shifted on the bed, holding her stomach. Her breath was uneven, her hands trembling as another sharp pain shot through her lower belly. She had been feeling strange all day, tightness, pressure, something she couldn’t explain. But now… it was worse. “Jeremy?” she called out softly. Her voice was weak. Jeremy walked into the room holding a plate of rice and chicken. “You didn’t eat lunch. Try something now. Just a little.” Serena shook her head. “I… I don’t feel good.” She closed her eyes. “My stomach… it hurts. Bad.” Jeremy put the plate down fast. “What kind of pain? Like cramps?” She nodded slowly. “But stronger… deeper. Like the baby’s trying to come out.” Jeremy’s heart jumped. He stepped closer. “That’s not possible. You’re only eight months. One m
