JASQUIRE

Immediately after stepping out of the room, my heart began racing and it became hard to hide my expression. The weight of what had just happened still pressed down on my chest. I walked quickly but not too quickly, careful not to draw attention to myself. My feet barely made a sound against the old wooden floor.

“Father,” I called softly, my voice barely rising above a whisper. I glanced around, hoping no one had heard me. “Father...” I repeated, a little louder this time.

I hesitated when I heard the sound—a faint shuffle. My breath caught mid-step. It came from behind me, close, too close. Every instinct screamed for me to turn around, to see who—or what—was there. But I didn’t.

I forced myself to remain still, eyes fixed ahead

Turning too quickly would only confirm suspicion. Whoever was behind me might already be watching, waiting for that one flinch, that one giveaway glance. So I stayed rigid, pretending not to notice.

I shifted slightly, just enough to seem casual.

ALEJANDRO“Why do you keep letting your daughter run wild?” I demanded an answer, my voice already rising before the door even clicked shut behind me. I flung my arm out in a sweeping gesture, as if the air alone could carry the weight of my fury.Malachi closed the door slowly, as though buying himself time. He turned to face me with a puzzled frown creasing his brow. “What’s this about?” he asked, but I didn’t give him the courtesy of a pause.“She was in my room,” I snapped. “On my bed. Lying there like it belonged to her. And I don’t recall letting her in.”His mouth parted slightly, eyes narrowing with a flicker of disbelief. “Who was?”“Your daughter,” I said through gritted teeth, biting back the instinct to shout louder than I already had. “Your wild, wandering daughter who thinks she can barge into other people’s private spaces without asking.”“I—” He blinked, shaking his head slightly. “You’re saying she was in your quarters? Just now?”“Yes. Now. This morning. I woke up to

  • The Tyrant’s Broken Princess   CHAPTER 74

ALEJANDROThe first thing I registered was warmth. Not the kind that came from sunlight through parted curtains, nor the familiar heat of too many blankets wrapped around his legs. This warmth was breathing. It felt as though someone was lying by my side.My eyes flew open. For a long, horrible second, I didn’t move. My brain didn’t quite believe what my eyes were showing me.Someone was in my bed.Not on the bed—in the bed, half covered by a blanket, lying with their back to me as if they belonged there. Long hair fanned over the pillow. A shoulder peeking out from under the covers. One pale, slender arm curled loosely against my chest. As if they’d fallen asleep mid-embrace.I didn’t recognize the arm.My heart thumbed, and immediately, I jerked back, the bed creaking too loudly. She hummed, turning to reveal her face. Jasquire. My eyebrows furrowed.I shot up and scrambled off the mattress. What the hell? The room spun as I rose too fast. My temples throbbed. A sour taste in my mou

MEANDRAI couldn’t get over it.No matter how many times I replayed it in my mind, it still felt surreal. Alejandro had chosen me—not Jasquire, not the girl I guess he would end up with, not who everyone around us assumed he would pick. He’d chosen me.Even now, just thinking about it, my chest felt lighter. A warm thrill bubbled in my stomach, tickling something soft and secret. I didn’t know how to hold it all inside me, this joy—this disbelief.I lay there on my back, the bedsheet tangled around my legs, staring up at the cracks in the ceiling like they might spell out some cosmic confirmation that this wasn’t a dream. He had really chosen me over Jasquire.Me.My lips parted into a smile—small, then wide, stretching almost involuntarily. I covered my face with my hands and let out a quiet laugh.I curled to my side, my fingers playing absently with the fraying edge of the pillow.Everything felt different, like my words had shifted. And it had shifted.I wasn’t just some afterthou

  • The Tyrant’s Broken Princess   CHAPTER 72

MEANDRAI was just about to step forward—one foot already in the door—when a sound tore through the silence of the hallway. A scream. Not just any scream. One I dreadedToo familiar.Jasquire.My breath caught. For one terrifying second, I couldn’t move. My muscles clenched, frozen mid-step, every nerve in my body prickling with dread. My mind tried to reason, to tell me it wasn’t her. Maybe it was someone else. But no.I knew that voice.A cold shiver darted down my back like a warning bell. That scream was burned into my memory—every mocking edge of it, every manipulative pitch. And even now, knowing it could only bring more chaos, my chest tightened.Alejandro leaned forward, poking half of his body out the door as I stepped back.He looked left, then right, sticking his head further into the dim hallway like he could sniff out whatever trouble had broken thesilence.“Who screams like that in the middle of the night?” he asked, his brows furrowed in sleepy irritation.I didn’t ans

MEANDRAShantai was glad I had stayed with her till she was done baking the cake. To be honest, I stayed with her because I was still a little shaken by Jasquire’s appearance. I wasn’t ready to deal with her this late in the night and definitely not alone. At least, for now. There was no reassurance that if she yanked my hair, Alejandro would come and save me.Yes. I did want to be courageous and not be afraid by Jasquire’s threats and actions but the fear that was instilled in me wouldn’t magically disappear or because I said it should.Shantai’s lips spread into a wide smile when. She brought the cake out of the oven. She looked at me with glee and nodded in approval. I smiled as well.“I just hope Belle would love it,” Shantai said as she covered the cake.“She will,” I answered with a smile.I watched as her eyes shifted—not to me, but around the room. There was something in her gaze, a restless fluttering, a sort of searching that hadn’t quite yet settled on a goal. Her small bro

  • The Tyrant’s Broken Princess   CHAPTER 70

MEANDRABy the time Alejandro left, Belle had fallen asleep. I sat beside her bed and watched her for a while, imagining how happy she would be when she saw the cake Alejandro had said she lunged for. It would make her happier than she was a few minutes ago.It made me glad that she would be glad. At least, I could make someone happy for once. I haven’t been able to genuinely make someone’s lips spread into a smile. Belle had always smiled when she saw me, I didn’t know why, and I thought it was best to stay away from what I didn’t understand, but now I lunged to see that smile. It felt like some sort of achievement whenever she seemed happy. Then there’s Alejandro, who now smiles whenever he sees me. Maybe not all the time, and maybe it’s just my mind. Maybe he smiles because Belle’s next to me, but it’s still something. If Belle was the only reason he smiled, he wouldn’t ask me to take a walk with him. He wouldn’t have smiled or laughed today. He wouldn’t have asked for my opinion,
