[Ivan’s POV]
"Who?"
I eyed Arissa as she continued to stare into the mirror ahead of her. Despite her insisting that something was there, I just couldn’t see it. Was she playing some sort of trick? Or was she actually seeing something?
"Kids," Arissa muttered, reaching out and touching the mirror’s surface. "All the kids I killed in the past."
At her words, I felt my heart clench painfully as images of that boy that attempted to kill her in the past appeared. Though I had managed to see that much of her memories, I hadn’t had the heart to actually ask her about it.
"Maybe you’re just tired." I murmured, wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her against me. "Why don’t you try getting some sleep."
"Sleep." The word came out quietly, but she didn’t protest as I pulled her closer. "I still need to brush my teeth." She pointed out, finally seeming to snap out of her daze.
"Then let me help you."
Even though I knew that she didn’t need my help, something about leaving her alone in this moment didn’t sit right. Despite her attempt at trying to come across as unphased, I could tell that she was shaken by whatever had happened. If I left her alone now, she would definitely begin to spiral, trying to bottle it all up.
"I’m not a child." Arissa sighed, lifting a shaky hand and touching my cheek. "I appreciate your concern though."
Nodding, I quickly kissed the top of Arissa’s head and began to move myself. Slowly, I untangled myself in hopes that she would stop me. But when she didn't, I headed out of the room and made my way to the large stone balcony that was attached to our room.
Outside, the moon was high in the sky and I could make out our ceremony guests were still hanging around drinking and enjoying themselves. After learning that Arissa was fine and simply exhausted, they continued to carry on making too much noise and filling the air with the stench of alcohol.
Letting out a grumble, I pulled a cigarette from my pocket and brought it to my lips. I knew that Arissa hated this habit, but after seeing her like that, I had to admit I was unnerved and needed it to clear my head.
‘Excuses.’ Bastian chuckled, sending waves of irritation through me. ‘You just have no self-control.’
‘No self control?’ I repeated, letting out a chuckle of my own. ‘I think I did damn good waiting for Arissa to accept us.’
Memories of that time began to flash across my mind, reminding me of just how truly broken Arissa and I both were. Although we were working towards fixing ourselves, we still had a ways to go. But it was nothing compared to now.
"Ivan?"
"Shit!"
Pulling the cigarette from my lips, I quickly stubbed it out and turned to watch Arissa make her way towards me. A look of dissatisfaction flashed in her eyes, and I knew that I was about to get an earful about smoking.
"First…" I began as she stopped directly in front of me. "I’m just…"
"Shut up." Arissa growled, snaking her arms around me and pressing her lips against mine. "I’ll let you off for tonight."
Despite knowing that something was wrong, I couldn’t stop myself from wrapping my arms around Arissa’s waist and pulling her closer while my tongue began to dance with hers. The minute her essence and scent enveloped me, I lost control and could only do as nature intended.
"Should we..." Arissa murmured, pulling away just enough to look into my eyes. "Back inside?"
Inside… Right, we were standing on a fucking balcony where everyone could see. Something about that actually didn’t sound too bad.
"Come on." Arissa giggled, swatting my arm. "Don’t even think about it. What we do behind closed doors is meant for only us. "
"Are you sure about that?" I countered, remembering the many, many times she attempted to jump me in front of my pack mates.
"Well," Arissa trailed off, her eyes flashing mischeviously.
Fuck, this woman was truly going to be the death of me. She was too damn alluring, especially while standing there in that far too short lace shift without any underwear.
‘Snap out of it.’ Bastian hissed as I moved forward for another attack. ‘Something’s wrong with her!’
‘What?’
Dammit! Why did Bastian have to remind me of this? All I wanted to do was fuck Arissa’s brains out and go to sleep. Tomorrow, we had to go and meet with the nomads that travelled all the way here for a peace conference.
"What’s wrong?" Arissa asked, reaching out and touching my arm. "You suddenly became distracted."
"I think..." I began, while unable to believe I was about to say this. "Instead of having sex tonight, we should talk."
"Talk?" Arissa repeated, furrowing her brows. "Are you being serious?"
"I know." I huffed, shaking my head. "I can’t believe I’m saying this either, but you’ve been mentioning seeing dead kids all night. I think we should discuss that."
"What is there to talk about?" Arissa asked, immediately going on guard.
Reaching out, I pulled Arissa to me once more and rested my chin on her head. Didn’t she realize that just by going on guard about something so traumatic, I would immediately want to know and share her burdens?
"Can you tell me about that time?" I managed, holding my breath while Arissa’s tiny body tensed against me.
"Why are you asking?" She demanded, beginning to attempt to untangle herself.
Tightening my hold, I lifted her and gently positioned her in my arms so I was carrying her princess style. Ignoring her continuing to fight to break free, I headed inside and sat down on our bed, making her sit in my lap.
"Arissa, clearly something about that time is bothering you if you’re beginning to see those kids. I want to help you, but you have to let me in. "
As I spoke, Arissa averted her gaze and nervously nibbled her lip. For a moment, her body remained stiff, and I was almost positive that if I let go, she would bolt. But after a few more moments, she began to relax and then finally let out a long breath.
"Do you really want to hear about this?" She asked quietly, turning her beautiful eyes to meet mine. "You may not love me anymore once you know. After all, I’ve killed many innocents. "
"No matter what you say or do, I won’t love you any less." I promised, kissing her cheek. "I understand at that time you had no other choice."
"Then where should I begin?" She sighed, seeming to go somewhere far away. "The very beginning, when I was sent to that place, or when I made my first kill?"
"How about the very beginning?" I suggested, nuzzling her throat. "The night is young and we have nothing but time."
[Arissa’s POV]"Where to start?" I could feel my heartbeat picking up as I let all the emotions of that time crash into me. Until this day, I hadn’t told a single soul about that time or what I went through. It was still hard to believe that I would be doing this now. "As you know, at the age of eight, I didn’t meet my wolf.""That’s right." Ivan confirmed, tightening his hold on me. "And because of that, you were sent away.""Right," I sighed. "I was sent to Tenerbris Island." I continued, trying to keep my voice calm. "It was a specially made island for omega’s. The whole purpose of the island was to see who was the best candidate for reproduction. There it is kill or be killed. "Now that the words were flowing, so were the memories. The bloody sand that remained stained, leaving memories of what happened. The horror in my opponents' eyes as they slowly bled to death while I watched."Arissa," Ivan murmured, placing a hand on my cheek. "Where did you go?"Snapping out of my daze, I
[Arissa’s POV]"Welcome." Ivan called, remaining oblivious to the confusion that was rushing through me. "We are so happy that you agreed to...""No need for niceties." The man announced, cutting Ivan off.Instantly, I could feel annoyance beginning to radiate from him as he bit back his urge to argue. Haha, it looked like I would have some entertainment soon."There is no reason to attempt to ass kiss, alpha."This time I was unable to withstand the laughter that erupted from me, earning myself looks from all around me."It seems they aren’t impressed with you, Ivy." I managed in between bouts of laughter. "Shall I try?""Do you think it will...""Oh!" The tinkling voice echoed around us, cutting Ivan off once again.Confusion flared through me as I tried to make sense of what was going on. Turning my attention to the duo that had been coming to greet us, I braced myself as the woman’s eyes lit up with lust and she rushed forward."You’re so tiny and cute!" The woman cooed, wrapping
[Arissa’s POV]"Repeat that." I snapped, starting to believe that this old man was full of shit. "Kill the caster? How the fuck am I supposed to find them?"This was becoming more and more ridiculous. I had been cursed... cursed...As if the last fourteen years of my life weren’t a fucking curse. But not only was I cursed, I was also expected to know who exactly cursed me. How in the hell was I supposed to do that? I had crossed paths with so many insane people that it could be anyone!"Arissa, mind your manners." Ivan whispered, pulling me closer to him. "He is only...""Trying to help?" I finished for him, narrowing my gaze. "What would be helpful is..."I didn’t get to finish my sentence as a sudden wave of nausea hit me, causing my mouth to water and the taste of bile to dance on my tongue. Turning, I managed to make it to a rose bush before the contents of my stomach came back up. Dammit, this was really getting frustrating. If I wasn’t seeing dead children, I was throwing my bra
[Ivan’s POV]I watched as Arissa slipped off the formal attire she had been wearing for meeting the nomads and began to rummage through the closet for something more comfortable. Fuck the woman was enticing and the urge to attack her began to shadow any other thoughts."Don’t think about it, Ivy." Arissa giggled, pulling out a simple black dress and holding it against her chest. "Do you think this is acceptable for a banquet?"Standing up, I approached Arissa and yanked the far too short dress from her grasp. I didn’t know what she was playing at, but I wasn’t about to let any man see her in something so damn revealing."I think," I began, reaching around her and rummaging. "This is a better choice."Giving a tug, I pulled out a blue number with long sleeves and a floor-length skirt. Though the bust line was a little too low for my liking, it was much better than the one she was trying to wear."That grandma dress?" Arissa puffed, eyeing the garment in my hand. "I don’t understand why
[Arissa’s POV]The next day, I stood in front of the old holding cells where my mother had been banished after being brought back to Ivan’s pack. For a year, she had remained in this place, alone and away from the world. Not once had I bothered to come visit her, but despite my insistence that I didn’t care what came of her, the servants regularly informed me of her whereabouts. After what happened the night before, I didn't have the energy to argue with Ivan's suggestion, so I allowed him to bring me here. Now, I was regretting my decision and wishing that I had fought a little harder to not come.Letting out a frustrated growl, I looked over at Ivan as he spoke with the guard that watched over her during the day. I didn't know what they were talking about, and I didn’t care. However, before long, the guard was unlocking the door that kept my mother away from the rest of the world."Do we really have to do this?" I asked Ivan as I peered inside the dark building. "There are other way
[Ivan’s POV]"Are you alright?" I asked once Arissa and I were back in the pack house. "You’ve been really quiet.""Are you saying I talk a lot?" Arissa countered, attempting to put up a strong front."You know what I mean." I sighed.Even though this type of response was typical for Arissa, it didn’t mean I liked it. As her mate, I was more than willing to destroy anyone she asked me to, even if it meant destroying the moon goddess herself. I would do anything to see her smile and to know that she was happy and had everything she could ever want.‘Such a romantic.’ Bastian chuckled, sending waves of annoyance through me.‘Shut the hell up.’ I hissed, pushing him back to where he came from. ‘Stay out of this.’‘She is our mate.’ Bastian pointed out. ‘Therefore it involves me too.’‘Rosario is yours.’ I countered. ‘Arissa is mine.’‘I’m no ones.’ Rosario growled, causing Arissa to freeze mid-step and shoot me a glare."Are you discussing me?" She demanded, narrowing her gaze.Shit, I w
[Arissa’s POV]"Ivan," I whispered, trying to get myself together. "We need to move."The one that cursed me was near, and while we were sitting here staring at a note and a body, they were getting away. Fuck that. I wasn’t about to let that happen. Especially if letting the person go meant having to see more of those dead children, and now even my father.Jumping up, I began to move, ignoring Ivan’s protests as I located a window and launched myself through it, sending glass spraying towards the ground as I fell. Landing on my feet, I sniffed the air, trying to locate the intruder. When I managed to catch onto a faint scent, I began to move.‘Is this a good idea?’ Rosario asked as I began to make my way into the woods beyond. ‘Something doesn’t feel right.’‘Do you have any other suggestions?’ I huffed, stopping long enough to hunt for the scent I was following once more. ‘Should we just let this bastard get away?’‘No, but don’t you think it is weird that Ivan couldn’t locate the pe
[Arissa's POV]"Arissa! Where the hell are you?"A wave of relief rushed through me as Ivan’s worried voice reached my ears. It seemed that I was saved."Over here!" I called, trying to not look at my gashed up arms. I wasn’t sure if this was just a trick of the jinn or if I was actually this damaged, but for now, getting free of these fucking ghosts and branches was the biggest priority."What the hell?" Ivan hissed once he managed to reach me. "How did you manage this?""Magic. Could you please help me out?"I watched as the ghost children began to fade with each branch Ivan managed to break away from me. Once I was fully freed, they had managed to disappear entirely, leaving only Ivan and I in the middle of this godforsaken forest."Thanks." I sighed as Ivan yanked my feet free from the roots that were holding them. "You showed just in…""What the hell were you thinking?" Ivan demanded, cutting me off entirely. "Throwing yourself out of a window and running head first into danger?"
