Chapter 4

작가: Susan Mayer
The First Embrace lasted long and by the time the noises next door died down, it was already the next night.

Just as I finished tidying my room, Saul kicked the door open furiously. His hands clamped down on my shoulders—right where the purple bruises from the picture frame still ached.

"You gave her the blood extractor, didn't you?"

His pupils had returned to normal black, no longer in feeding mode, but he seemed angrier than before.

I winced in pain, took a deep breath, and said word by word, "I don't know what you're talking about."

At my denial, he sneered, not loosening his grip.

"I can only recognize your blood scent. If you hadn't given her the extractor—coated in your smell—how could I have lost control and done that to her... Bella," he ground out my name, "I know your intentions, but you shouldn't have hurt her."

Looking at his angry, twisted face, I felt an overwhelming exhaustion.

"You couldn't control yourself and drank her blood, and you made her one of you..." I looked up at him and tried my best to explain. "You should be happy. At least no one else will drink her blood now."

The slap!

My cheek burned hot. I turned my face, blinking hard to hold back the tears in my eyes.

"You've changed."

He forced my chin up, eyes blazing with anger and disappointment. "I should never have saved you in the first place."

Yes. Why had he bothered?

I laughed bitterly, as years of company and devotion were wasted.

"Blood!" A scream came from next door. "I need blood!"

Saul's expression changed. Ignoring my struggles, he dragged me into the next room.

Jacinda, hair disheveled, looked around wildly. At the sight of Saul, she burst into tears like a drowning person grabbing a lifeline.

"Give me blood, Saul! Give me blood!" Her nails scraped the blanket, leaving jagged marks.

The scene was so horrifying that I forgot my pain for a moment.

There was animal blood in the fridge—it could save her.

But the next second, I was yanked in front of Jacinda.

Saul tore down my collar, and I realized his plan. I thrashed wildly, but my hands were pinned behind my back, and my neck was thrust toward Jacinda's mouth.

My veins held the fresh human blood that vampires craved most.

Jacinda didn't hesitate. Her fangs sank into my neck—right where Saul's mark had once been. She drank ravenously.

Blood drained fast, and I convulsed in pain.

"Let... me... go..."

The healed wounds on my back split open again with the struggle. I felt blood soaking my clothes, the smell of the blood choking my nose until I wanted to vomit.

As Saul leaned in to steady my drooping head, I felt a sharp pain from the pact tattoo on the back of my hand.

Three years ago, he saved me.

This was the last time he disappointed me and I've paid my debt.

I was feeling dizzy, and I had lost the last bit of strength I had. I closed my eyes resignedly, hands slipping limp from behind my back.

Saul felt my weight collapse and saw my pale face.

He jolted, releasing me just as Jacinda still lost her mind and tried to bite again. He shoved her, and she collapsed unconsciously.

His hand clamped over the two deep punctures on my neck, but blood poured through his fingers.

"Butler! Butler!" he shouted, panic in his voice.

There was no answer, so he laid me on the bed, saying "Wait for me," then bolted out.

Hearing him yelling for help, and then the door slam, I forced my eyes open. Shaking, I ripped the bandage from my arm, pressed it to my neck, and staggered up.

Dizzy as hell, I ransacked the drawer where the extractor usually was—it was gone...

The ancient clock chimed midnight.

I tore off the third page from the calendar and took the silver dagger to slash my pact tattoo on the back of my hand.

Blood gushed out, stinging horribly. It was agony, pain shooting through my entire body but the bond was broken finally.

Then, I left the castle without looking back.

"Bella," Saul shouted, finally breaking the silence spell, his voice hoarse. "Don't..." His sadness was just because he'd got used to having me as his bloodslave. But I didn't want to bear the sharp pain alone when the pact curse struck again. I also didn't want to keep convincing myself to love him through endless indifference and hurt."Saul, as you said, I was just a bloodslave for your needs," I said. "Let's part ways peacefully." That was the last thing I could say to him.I felt cold after the bonding so I held out my trembling hands around Ramon's neck. Years ago, when I tried to do the same for Saul, he'd rejected my touch.A harsh howl ripped from Saul's throat. Veins bulged on his forehead and wounds were in all limbs as he broke free from Ramon's hold. He staggered toward me. "You are not just a bloodslave. I love..." His words choked off.Ramon grabbed his neck, disgust on his face. "You have no right to say that. You don't deserve her." They tangled, crashing into wa

I heard my own voice, cold and lifeless. This move made his eyes turn completely red. "You want to kill me! To go back to that man, you want to kill me?" He stepped closer recklessly and the silver needle pierced through his clothes, close to his heart so much."Since you came back with me, I won't let you go again. It doesn't matter if the blood pact is broken and let us form a new one." He stared at my neck and bared his fangs. This was why he'd brought me back: to re-bond me, to tie me to his side again."Saul!" Someone shouted urgently, pulling him back. It was Jacinda and she was sobered. "It was me. I took the blood extractor!" She stood in front of Saul, tears falling. I'm sorry... I'm so sorry."Saul suddenly pulled her close, raising his voice. "What did you say?""Saul, I'm sorry and I just..." She hugged Saul, but he pushed her away harshly. Saul retracted his fangs, his red eyes staring at me. "Why didn't you tell me the truth?"I told him it wasn't me who gave Jacinda

When we took the last train back, the platform was the same as ever, with a few lights on. But we didn't expect Saul to still be there. He stood where we had left, his straight back only relaxing when he saw me. I ignored him and tried to leave directly, but he stubbornly blocked our way."I know you haven't formed a bond with him yet I can smell it." I turned a deaf ear and kept walking, but he followed closely. "Since you left, I haven't had a single drop of blood..."I finally stopped, my patience gone. "Lord Saul, you can drink any blood from anyone now. There's no need to follow me.""I only want your blood!" he shouted, panting heavily and almost losing his balance. His haggard look really made him seem like he hadn't eaten in a long time. "Come back with me, just once and the last time." Seeing I wouldn't budge, his eyes grew crazed as he stared at me and threatened, "Or I'll go back and drink the old butler's blood.""You cannot do that!" I grabbed his collar, my hands shak

Saul frowned at my answer and stepped closer, trying to grab me. I stepped back to dodge, and his hand froze in mid-air."Come back with me.""We have nothing to do with each other anymore, Saul." I called him by his name to show my attitude."Come back with me. At least let me help you end the pact."The announcement for the train's departure rang out. I didn't want to miss the train, and I didn't want to stay stuck there with him. So I told him directly: "I have moved the pact tattoo from my hand and the pact has ended. We're both free now." From then on, neither I nor my blood would have anything to do with him.His eyes widened in disbelief and his pupils dilated rapidly. My figure was reflected in his dark eyes. "What did you say?" He stepped closer to me again, trying to persuade me patiently, "Come back with me first. Let's talk when we get back.""Get back?" Remembering his past rough behavior, I sneered. "Go back to help you feed my blood to Jacinda?""That's not what I mea

In the dark night, my each step was a crushing weight, stealing my strength, and my breaths drew in slower, more laborious with every passing moment. Finally, I couldn't hold on anymore and fell forward. In the last moment of consciousness, I dropped into an incredibly cold embrace....When I woke up, the intense light made my eyelids flutter. After a moment of adjustment, I finally opened my eyes. There was a white ceiling, a vintage crystal chandelier, a huge room, and sunlight pouring in through the windows."You're awake at last," a voice came into my ears.I turned my head and saw the vampire I'd made a promise to: Ramon. Except for his extremely pale skin, he looked like ordinary humankind, sitting by my bed with the sunlight dancing on him."Aren't you... afraid of sunlight?" I blurted out instinctively. He chuckled. "If I were afraid of light, other vampires would laugh at me." I'd almost forgotten: Ramon was a prince, the highest rank among vampires.Remembering my promis
