Chapter 7

Author: Den Wood
“She was always s-so concerned about her looks. Why would she choose… such a way to… Weren’t you always s-so afraid of feeling pain?”

I wailed my grief out into the world. I thumped my fists into my own chest.

“I didn’t even have one last chance to hold her. Why couldn’t I have held her back?”

In the end, I could not speak much further. Everything came out as a loud cry. I slumped into the chair, but my body kept convulsing. I felt hollowed out, stuffed full of only heartache and misery.

I looked like a complete mess with snot and tears running down my face.

All of the police officers were quiet.

After he heard my speech, Jay’s gaze turned gentle and somewhat sympathetic.

My urge to avenge Celeste made clear my motive to kill Kellan and the others. Her terrible death was the reason for tonight’s vengeance.

“So, you killed them? But what does this have to do with Cynthia?”

I composed myself and looked up. “I only said they deserve to die, not that I killed them. They died

“Actually, I’ve always liked you. I watched you get so much more fragile after Celeste passed. Still, you remained friends with Kellan and Lysette. I knew that you were looking for a chance to get revenge, so I could only stay by your side. That way, I could try to lessen the guilt I felt.”The audio clip crackled with more static, and it sounded as if Cynthia had sighed with great emotion. “This was until a few days before, when I watched you steal some cyanide from the lab. I knew that you were going to make your move soon. I couldn’t bear to watch you keep going like this. “I hope that you’ll slowly change your life and get it back to a straighter path. Let me be the criminal. I’ve been silently tolerating everything for two years so that I can assuage my guilt.” The sound of a key turning in a lock was audible in the audio recording. Then, we heard me call the police at the door. The audio clip ended. The interrogation room was dead silent. With the last piece of evide

I suddenly rose from the chair and grabbed Jay by the collar. I interrogated him, “What do you mean they were very much in love with each other? What do you know? Kellan doesn’t deserve my sister!”Then, I lunged for the evidence bag with the photo on the table. However, Jay was ready for this. When my hand reached out, he moved half a step back. He even managed to snag the evidence bag and hide it behind him. At the same time, he pinned my shoulder to the table.“Give that back! Give my sister back!”Even as I yelled, I was doing my best to grab the evidence bag. “Let go of me! You can’t do this!”I struggled like a trapped animal and nearly got out of Jay’s hold.Right then, other police officers came over to help restrain me. By the time I was shoved back into the chair, my eyes were bloodshot. Tears stung my eyes and flowed freely with snot and saliva, covering my whole face. I sobbed and yelled, “What do you people know? You don’t know my sister! Kellan ruined my sister’

Jay nodded thoughtfully. “That’s a reasonable deduction, but what about motive?”“Cynthia used to like Kellan as well. Back then, she even asked me for his contact information. I was the one who introduced them to each other at a department event,” I said stiffly. “What was the incident two years ago that Kellan mentioned in the audio clip? Can you tell me about it in detail?” After Jay said this, he gave a signal to another police officer, who quickly brought in another transparent evidence bag. A bad feeling started up in my gut even as my gaze was pulled unconsciously to the evidence bag. Within it was a photograph in a frame. It was something I had brushed my fingers across countless times in the past two years. There was a girl in the photo. She was dressed in a butterfly-print top and a layered skirt. Under the sun, a breeze swept up the layers of her skirt, making them look like flower petals. The girl beamed brightly. In her right hand, she held onto a boy who was sm

I looked at my figure on the screen, and my eyes widened in disbelief. Then, I looked at Jay, trembling slightly as I did.“Detective, how could you suspect me? I may have been the first witness on the scene, but I’m a victim here too! You can’t accuse me of being the killer just because the footage shows I was there at 8 p.m. Do you know how much that hurts me?“Yes, I arrived at Silkwood Gardens at 8 p.m., but I never went into Kellan and Lysette’s place. When I got to the door, I heard them making fun of me. I was there for less than five minutes, and I didn’t even go inside. How could I have poisoned the food? Besides, my fingerprints aren’t even in the room!”Jay’s gaze stayed trained on me. “Yes, that’s right. It’s not quite possible.”Suddenly, the coroner came in and handed Jay a printed autopsy report. “Her time of death is different from the two others. This means they ingested the poison at different times. Our investigation shows that the cyanide was mainly added to

I started to sweat at this. Hurriedly, I tried to explain. “I went home for a bit to freshen up and pick something up before going over.” The timing was so much of a coincidence that I even suspected something amiss myself. “Do you have any conflict with them? Or maybe some small issues?” Jay changed the subject, but his eyes were still cold.I ducked my head sheepishly. I mumbled, “The four of us went on a trip once. I slept in late and delayed our plans, and that upset Lysette a bit.“Things were pretty awkward back then, but Cynthia helped me smooth things over, so we managed to go on the trip in the end.”“Did Kellan and Lysette ever snub you?” Jay’s questions became more pointed. “Or did they ever mock you?”I stayed quiet. I slowly recalled some instances when I felt I had been intentionally left out. While we were discussing the itinerary for the trip, my suggestions were often ignored. When we took photos together, I was always shot from a bad angle, so the photos cam
