"Slamming these offers down on their desks and tell them the Vance Group is not for sale!"

The heavy thud of documents striking solid mahogany shattered the tense morning silence of Julian’s office. He stood behind his desk, eyes bloodshot, shirt rumpled, patience frayed to breaking point. Before him, the firm’s three senior lawyers kept their heads bowed, faces pale—daring not to meet the gaze of their teetering CEO.

"We cannot outright refuse, Mr. Vance," one lawyer spoke, voice trembling. "Blackwood Capital seized 38% of our public shares overnight. If they secure the remaining minority stakes this morning, they become the controlling shareholder—with full legal authority to overhaul the entire board of directors."

Julian gripped the edge of his desk until his knuckles blanched white. Three years he had fortified his business empire, burying himself in relentless work to outrun the crushing guilt he carried for Clara. Now this woman—Clarissa Blackwood—had arrived with the full weight of her financial power, ready to dismantle everything he had built in a matter of hours.

Suddenly his office door swung open without a knock.

Clarissa stepped inside, her presence a striking blend of graceful elegance and quiet menace. She wore an ivory tailored blazer that contrasted sharply against the sleek black silk blouse beneath it. Behind her, two international legal counsel and her personal assistant followed, carrying bound cases of documents.

"You may leave," Clarissa commanded calmly, addressing Julian’s lawyers.

Without waiting for Julian’s consent, the men gathered their papers and hurried out—overwhelmed by the undeniable, commanding aura radiating from her.

The vast office was now left to just the two of them: separated by the massive wooden desk and an uncrossable chasm of heartbreak and resentment.

"It is incredibly rude to enter my office without permission, Clarissa," Julian said, forcing his tone to remain steady even as his chest burned with turmoil.

Clarissa walked unhurriedly to the leather chair across from his desk and sat, crossing her legs with effortless poise. "Your office? Perhaps for now. But once the stock market closes this afternoon, this space could very well belong to me, Mr. Vance."

Julian clenched his fists on the desk and leaned forward, closing the distance. "Why are you doing this, Clara? If you seek revenge for that night—take my life! Do not resort to these underhanded tactics to destroy everything I have worked so hard to build!"

Clarissa held his gaze without blinking. A faint, cold smile settled on her lips.

"First—my name is Clarissa," she stated flatly, locking eyes with his despair-filled gaze. "Second—this is not revenge. This is business. Blackwood Capital sees immense potential being utterly wasted under the leadership of a distracted, incompetent CEO such as yourself."

"You are lying!" Julian snapped, his voice cracking in the quiet room. "You do this because you hate me! You hate me because I left you trapped in that burning car! You hate me because I chose—"

"Chose Maya?" Clarissa cut in, her tone casual and unbothered—as if discussing nothing more than the afternoon weather forecast.

Julian’s heart seemed to stop beating. That implicit admission rolled so easily off her tongue.

"You... you remember everything..." he whispered, his voice weak as the burning weight of regret surged back to the surface. He lowered his gaze, fixing it on her hands—now bare, stripped of their wedding rings. "That night... I panicked, Clara. I truly believed you were a strong doctor who could save yourself... I never imagined..."

"Enough, Mr. Vance," she interrupted firmly. Her tone sharpened, cutting him off before he could wallow in self-pity. "The tragic history between you and your late wife has absolutely no bearing on the acquisition documents resting on this desk."

Clarissa slid a thick black folder across the wood toward him.

"Inside these papers, Blackwood Capital offers to buy out your remaining shares at double the current market price. If you accept, you walk away with enough wealth to provide for yourself and your companion for the rest of your lives. But if you refuse..." She paused, staring at him with icy detachment, "...we will launch a full external audit into allegations of prolonged embezzlement committed by Maya over the past two years."

Julian’s face drained of all color instantly. "What do you mean? Maya would never meddle with company funds—"

"Re-examine the marketing division’s financial records yourself," Clarissa replied smoothly as she rose from her chair, smoothing the crisp lines of her blazer with precise, deliberate movements. "The woman you risked everything to save that night has been siphoning small fortunes from your company budget—slowly, steadily—to pay off her family’s crippling debts. You were so blinded by your own guilt that you failed to see what was happening right under your nose."

Julian froze in place, struck utterly speechless. For three years, he had granted Maya unlimited access and privileges within the firm—all as penance for the terrible choice he made that night. He had never scrutinized the reports closely; his mind was too haunted, too consumed by the ghost of Clara to notice the corruption festering beside him.

Clarissa walked toward the door but paused, her hand resting lightly on the handle. Without looking back, she delivered her final words—this time dropping all formal titles to speak his name directly.

"One last thing, Julian," she said softly. The words were quiet, yet they struck his heart with the force of an explosion. "Being a strong woman does not mean being incapable of feeling pain. And even the most skilled doctor... can never heal a heart that has been shattered by the one person she trusted most in this world."

The flight to Singapore was quiet. High above the clouds, inside the pressurized cabin of her private Gulfstream, Clarissa stared out at the endless expanse of black sky. In her hand, she held a warm cup of black coffee, its steam rising slowly into the cool air.For three years, every breath she took had been fueled by a single, burning purpose: vengeance. She had envisioned this exact moment a thousand times—the total collapse of the Vance empire, Edward rotting in a cell, and Julian broken at her feet. Yet, as the city lights of Jakarta faded behind her, she felt no grand surge of triumph. Only a deep, profound stillness. Her tablet buzzed on the mahogany table beside her. It was a secure video link from Dr. Aris.Clarissa tapped the screen. The doctor's tired yet relieved face appeared on the display."He was moved out of the ICU an hour ago," Dr. Aris reported without preamble, knowing exactly who Clarissa was thinking about. "His lung capacity is improving, and the latest MR

“Are you sure this is wise?” Liam asked, his hands gripping the steering wheel. “Meeting your sister at this hour, at a secluded cabin outside the city… it feels like a setup. Especially after what you told me about seeing Maya.”Julian nodded slowly, his jaw set firm. “It is a setup. I know that. The message came from her phone, her voice, the code phrase only we two have ever known. Maya has her. She’s holding Elara hostage until I withdraw my testimony and hand over all the evidence against Edward.” He paused, his heart aching at the thought of his gentle, innocent sister caught in the crossfire of a war she never asked to fight. “If I don’t go, Maya will kill her. And if I go alone, she’ll kill us both. But I’m not walking into her trap empty-handed.”He tapped the small earpiece in his right ear. “Clarissa is monitoring every frequency within five miles. She knows we’re walking into danger. And she’s already positioned a tactical team at the perimeter. We’re not going to fight Ma

The physical therapy clinic was quiet, filled only with the soft hum of exercise machines and the distant, rhythmic ticking of a wall clock. Julian gripped the metal bar in front of him, his knuckles white, sweat rolling down his temples as he forced his legs to bear his full weight. Every breath was a sharp, stinging reminder of the bullet that had torn through his chest, but he didn’t stop. He wouldn’t stop. This was the price of his second chance—pain, effort, the slow, stubborn rebuilding of a body that had been brought to the edge of death.“Good,” his therapist said, standing beside him with steady encouragement. “Another minute. You’re stronger than you think.”Julian didn’t answer. His gaze was fixed on his own reflection in the mirror opposite him—pale, scarred, dressed in simple gray sweatpants and a white t-shirt that clung lightly to his shoulders. The man looking back wasn’t the powerful, untouchable head of the Vance Group. He was just a man, fighting to stand on his own

The press conference room was packed shoulder to shoulder, a sea of flashing cameras and shouting reporters that would have once bowed their heads the moment Julian Vance walked through the door. Today, they were here to tear him apart.Julian stood at the podium, his hands resting flat against the cool wood, his heart beating steady and strong beneath the scar on his chest. He had refused the shield of a private room or a written statement read by lawyers. He had walked in alone—no entourage, no bodyguards, no expensive suit. Just a simple black jacket, his face pale but his spine straight as steel. Every eye in the room was fixed on him, waiting for the arrogant tyrant they all knew to emerge. Instead, they saw a man who looked like he hadn’t slept in years, who carried the weight of his own sins on his shoulders like a cloak he could no longer hide.“Good morning,” he began, his voice calm, carrying clearly through the sudden hush. “I am not here to defend myself. I am not here to

Two weeks had passed since Julian had first stood on his own two feet beside that hospital window. The private recovery suite no longer felt like a prison of white walls and beeping machines; it had become a sanctuary of quiet struggle, a place where he fought not just for his body, but for his very soul. The bandages around his chest had been changed for the last time that morning, leaving only a pale, jagged scar curving over his heart—a permanent, physical reminder of the bullet that had nearly ended his life, and the woman who had refused to let him go.He sat in the armchair by the window, dressed in simple, well-worn clothes that felt alien against his skin. For decades, he had worn nothing but tailored suits, fabrics so fine they had cost more than most people earned in a year. Now he wore a plain cotton shirt and trousers, and as he ran his fingers over the rough, honest fabric, he realized with a quiet shock that he preferred it. There was no pretense here. No mask of wealth

  • The Wife He Thought Was Dead   ch 17

“Earn your redemption first, Tuan Vance.” Her words echoed in his mind, sharp yet gentle, cutting through the fog of exhaustion and pain that clung to him. “Then we’ll see if the future has a place for us.”He sank back against the pillows, his chest aching with every shallow breath. For so long, he had defined himself by power, by wealth, by the ironclad control he held over everything and everyone around him. Edward had systematically dismantled that control, poisoning his mind, twisting his memories, turning him into a weapon against the woman he loved more than life itself. And Julian had let it happen—his pride, his isolation, his desperate need to prove himself worthy of the Vance name had all been the cracks through which Edward had slipped. He had been a fool, a willing puppet dancing on strings he couldn’t even see. But now, the fog was gone. The neurotoxin had finally cleared from his system, leaving his mind sharp, clear, and painfully, devastatingly aware of every sin he h
