Chapter 1

Author: Year on Year
My husband, Michael Leigh, froze with his fork in midair. Apparently, that wasn't the answer he'd been expecting.

I met his eyes. "I married you because it made sense. I didn't love you all that much."

Michael's Adam's apple bobbed, and his face flushed red.

His first love, Emily Messier, laughed. "Of course you have to be practical when it comes to marriage. I get it."

She raised her wineglass and took a sip, her gaze skimming over my face.

I ignored her and turned to Michael. "Are you done eating? If you are, let's go."

He glanced at Emily, then at me. "Sadie, what's that supposed to mean?"

I picked up my bag. "I mean exactly what I said."

Emily stood and tilted her head. "Are you jealous? If it bothers you, I won't spend time with Michael anymore. You two are married, after all. I understand."

Then she reached over and tugged at Michael's sleeve.

I let out a laugh. "I don't mind at all, so don't worry. I get asked out plenty too. If Michael's going to be that strict about boundaries, I'd feel bad not doing the same, wouldn't I?"

Michael shot to his feet so fast his chair nearly tipped over. "Sadie! What are you talking about?"

I slung my bag over my shoulder. "You heard me just fine."

The corners of Emily's mouth dipped for a moment, but she quickly recovered.

"You really have the wrong idea. Michael and I are just old friends catching up. There's no need to be so sarcastic. It's only going to hurt things between you two."

I nodded. "Right. Catching up. Then keep catching up. I'm leaving."

Michael grabbed my wrist. "Sit down. We're not done eating. Why are you leaving?"

I looked down at his hand, then back up at him. "Let go."

He loosened his grip without thinking, and I pulled my wrist free.

"It's late. Emily shouldn't be going home alone this late, so I'm taking her home. You can take the subway. Text me when you get home."

I already had my phone out. "Sure. Take her. A friend of mine is nearby anyway. I'll get a ride from him."

Michael's expression changed. "What friend? At this hour? A man?"

"What's it to you?"

Without looking up, I texted my coworker, Ivan Garth.

"You nearby? Can you pick me up at The Bellwyn?"

His reply came almost immediately.

"Be there in five."

Michael stepped closer, trying to see my screen. "Sadie, who are you texting?"

I looked up at him with a smile.

"You can take Emily home, but I can't get a ride from someone? You two are just old friends catching up, right? So there's nothing strange about me meeting up with an old friend too."

Emily stood there, her expression starting to slip. "Michael, is she doing this because she's mad at me?"

"I'm not mad at you," I answered before Michael did.

Michael's expression had darkened.

I put on my coat, walked past them, and headed for the door. "My ride's here. I'm leaving."

Michael took a couple of quick steps after me. "Sadie! Explain what you mean before you leave!"

I glanced back at him. "Explain what? I've been perfectly clear this whole time. You're the one who doesn't get it."

I pushed open the restaurant door. Cool night air rushed in, making me shiver.

A silver-gray car was waiting at the curb. The window rolled down, and Ivan called out, "Sadie, over here."

I opened the door and got in.

As we pulled away, I caught sight of Michael and Emily in the rearview mirror, still standing outside the restaurant.

Ivan glanced at me but didn't pry.

"Thanks for coming to get me."

"No problem. I was having dinner nearby anyway."

We rode in silence for a while.

I leaned back in my seat and found myself thinking about Michael and me. We'd met on a blind date. Our families had been pushing us to settle down, so we got married after only six months.

Married life had been pretty uneventful. Michael worked late a lot, and I had my own job. I never held it against him. Then again, I wasn't all that invested either.

I'd always thought we could keep going like that forever.

But tonight was different. Emily sat across from me, commenting on my clothes, my job, and how much I made.

Michael cracked open a crab leg and put the meat on her plate. Then he told me dating and marriage were two different things.

I leaned against the window and suddenly found the whole thing absurd.

Everyone had a first love. I just wasn't the type to go back to mine.

I squinted up at the sky and hitched my bag higher on my shoulder."I just feel relieved. It's like a huge weight's been lifted," I said.My phone rang. It was a call from Ivan."Sadie, how did the hearing go?""Pretty well.""Then let's celebrate tonight. Dinner's on me.""Sure."I hung up and headed down the courthouse steps. I heard quick footsteps behind me."Sadie!"Michael hurried after me and stopped on the steps. His eyes were red and swollen, and his voice was hoarse."Sadie, give me one more chance. Just one."I stopped but didn't turn around."Michael, do you know what your biggest problem is?""What?"He took a step closer, a hint of cautious hope in his voice.I finally turned to look at him. "You always thought I'd wait for you. You always thought no matter how far you pushed me, I'd never leave."You thought once we were married, I wasn't going anywhere, so you could stop trying and start taking me for granted. Now you know better."His mouth opened, but

I hung up and blocked that number too. That afternoon, Serene called from a coworker's phone. Her voice was even sharper than last time."Sadie, you think you're really something, don't you? Mom got so worked up over this that she ended up in the hospital. Happy now?""Send me her room number. I'll send a fruit basket. Michael can pay for it, though. He's the one who upset her."Serene cursed and hung up.I set my phone down and went back to organizing the evidence.Across from me, Ms. Hewitt worked her way through everything I'd put together. As she read, a faint smile slowly appeared."Ms. Everett, you're in a very strong position. Your name is on the deed, you have solid evidence that Emily was living there with Michael, and the bank records show what he spent on her."She closed the folder and folded her hands on the table."Unless they can successfully challenge the evidence, I'd expect the court to grant the divorce. We can also make a case for you to receive more in the

I stopped in the entryway and glanced back at Michael and Emily.Emily stood partly hidden behind him, her eyes red. Michael stood there with his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles popped, his eyes bloodshot."Michael, not once through any of this have you thought you did anything wrong. In your mind, you were just helping a friend. You were just being sentimental about someone from your past. You were just being softhearted."And somehow, I'm the one making a big deal out of nothing. I'm unreasonable. I'm the one who can't be more understanding."But since Emily came back, every single thing you've done for her is something you never did for me. Did you ever crack open a crab leg for me? Did you ever ask if work was wearing me out? Did you even know how heavy my suitcase was when I moved out?"His lips trembled. He swallowed, but he couldn't say a word.I opened the door and walked out. The hallway light came on, casting a harsh white glow across the floor.Just as the elev

I slipped the new key into my pocket."You—"Michael started to speak, but I cut him off. "I'm here to get my things. Once I have them, I'm leaving."I went into our bedroom, dragged the dusty suitcase out of the corner, and started packing clothes into it.Michael followed me in. The moment he saw me packing clothes from the closet, his voice softened."Sadie, stop this. Put your things down and let's talk.""There's nothing to talk about. I've already had the divorce agreement drawn up. I'll send it to you tomorrow."His Adam's apple bobbed, and the color drained from his face.Emily stood in the doorway, twisting the apron ties around her fingers. Her eyes were red again."Sadie, you really have it wrong. I sleep in the guest room, and Michael sleeps in here. Nothing has happened between us."I kept folding clothes without looking at her. "The guest room? I slept in that bed last week. I changed the sheets right before I left. Did you sleep well?"Her eyes grew even redde

I stood outside the door with my bag in one hand and the useless key clenched in the other. The hallway light went out, so I stomped once to bring it back on. Harsh white light washed over the number on the door.I drew two slow breaths, then pounded on the door three times. By the third knock, my palm had gone numb.Quick footsteps came from inside, slippers slapping softly against the floor. The door opened.Emily stood there in my pale blue apron, a spatula flecked with oil in one hand. The smell of glazed pork ribs drifted out from inside. She tilted her head with a smile. "Oh. You're here."I pushed at the door. "Move."She didn't budge. She leaned against the frame, holding the spatula across her chest."Michael said you're not welcome here. If you want your things, you'll have to wait until he gets back."I looked her straight in the eye. "This is my home. My name is on the deed."She laughed softly and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "But the lock's bee

The specialist adjusted his glasses and got to work without asking anything else.I'd recorded the video before I moved out. It showed the pink slippers under the coffee table, an open suitcase in the guest room, and skincare products in the bathroom that weren't mine.Afterward, I went straight to the bank.I printed out six months of statements and highlighted several unusually large transactions. Every one of them was money Michael had spent on Emily. He'd paid for dinners, covered her rent, and sent her 5,000 dollars in a transfer labeled "furniture." I went through the transactions one by one, checking the amounts and filing each receipt in the folder.By the time I left the bank, the sun was blazing. I stood on the steps for a moment and squinted up at the sky.The folder felt heavy in my hands. It held two years' worth of things I'd overlooked, now turned into evidence. I used to think keeping track of things like this was too calculating, even beneath me.Now I knew bett
