Chapter 2: Lost Memory

“You tried to stay at home to take the medicine I prescribed and drink a lot of water, your liver was pretty badly damaged, even though you had a liver transplant, the filtering function was not very good, so please take care of yourself. Try to eat and stay healthy more.”

Will is in the inpatient clinic, today is especially crowded with patients. He spent a month taking care of his sister so now Will's patient count is increasing; they love Will's medical examination and treatment because he is a dedicated doctor whose patients are always well remembered and taken care of by him. It was past twelve o'clock at night, and Will was still in the inpatient clinic, seemingly exhausted because he hadn't had time to eat or drink. Will wasn't in a hurry either, he slowly opened the internet to read today's featured news.

News on October 12, a large avalanche in the Capter mountains has severely obstructed traffic, authorities are trying to clean up as quickly as possible to bring a clear route for people.

The weather forecast on the same day, the Capter mountains continued to have heavy snowfall, making it difficult to move and clear snow due to the avalanche. So far, no people have been found trapped in the avalanche. We will update the latest news tomorrow.

"Another avalanche?" He sighed. He said to himself, "The Capter Mountains were not a very high mountain before, but this time there was a continuous avalanche, which seriously affected the people. “What if this has anything to do with Luna being injured in the avalanche? "

The door opened. Will quickly turned off the computer screen, and he was looking. He stood up and began to remove the blouse he was wearing.

"Professor Miller, the patient in the ICU is awake. Professor Allen told me to come and tell him; he said that when you heard the news, you would come right away.

Will immediately dropped the blouse he was about to put on the chair. He quickly ran to the ICU room.

"Don't be afraid, I'm here..."

The voice coming from the side made Luna feel warm. She held the hand of the man standing beside her. It was a tall man with a slightly handsome face, along with a warm hand and voice. Standing next to him, Luna felt extremely familiar standing next to him.

"Luna, you'll be here waiting for me! I'll be back in a moment. " The man spoke, his hand leaving Luna's.

"Please, don't go!" Luna seemed to sense the spreading danger. She looked at him fearfully. Feeling that she would lose him in the blink of an eye, she said, "Stay with me, we'll go back to the way we were, okay?"

"Luna, you fell in love... and I fell in love with you too. We can't be together. Okay, let this place be our parting place." The man said, his face a little sad.

She held onto the man's hand. In this moment, she knew he would leave her forever. She couldn't let him go. She didn't know why, but there seemed to be a slight difference between him and her. This difference is not just the difference between men and women, it is the difference between humans and monsters.

"Don't go...I love you..." Luna yelled as she saw the man's back disappearing into the distance. The big blizzard made Luna unable to see the scene ahead. Her whole body was covered with snow. She tried to move but couldn't. Her whole body relaxed and gradually sank into the snow.

“Patient 1314!”

A nurse's voice was heard when she heard Luna's screams. It has been almost a month since each dangerous surgery, the doctors can see the positive changes from Luna's body. She slowly opened her eyes, the light of the electric bulb causing Luna to close her eyes again.

“Did you hear what we said?” A man with a tall and sturdy build spoke up. His face kindly looked at Luna and smiled, "Do you feel the pain when I touch your body?"

Luna nodded slightly, she really felt pain when the man touched her body. Her whole body ached, Luna looked at the man with a face that was both painful and confusing.

“You just woke up after more than a month in a deep coma. Do you remember what happened before the coma? It seems like you had a very tragic accident?” The other man spoke to Luna, who then turned to the nurse next to him and whispered, "Tell Professor Miller that his sister has regained consciousness, he just got out of work,  he might be running over here now.”

Luna shook her head slightly in response to the man's question. Indeed, now in her mind, there was no information or data to tell her about the previous accident. Luna's head was completely blank right now, only her heart was still aching.

About ten minutes later, Will came running, he quickly cleaned up and walked to the room where his sister was lying. Will saw Allen standing, Allen's expression was difficult to describe. It was obvious that Luna had woken up but why did Allen have such a puzzled expression on his face.

"Allen, what's wrong?" Will asked, "How's Luna, is she getting better?"

"All vital signs indicate Luna's well-being, but..." Professor Allen faltered.

"But what?" Will asked worriedly.

Allen walked out of the room, Will quickly follow. They approached a computer that was left outside, inside which was a CT scan of a brain. Will looked at the photo, he seemed to understand Allen's anxiety.

"Did you see it!" Allen said, “I noticed that Luna doesn't seem to remember what happened in the past. I think it was the aftershock of the accident so part of the memory was lost. However, this part of the memory is bigger than I thought, Luna almost lost all her memories from before. Even her relatives and you, her brother.”

“What is this hematoma?” Will pointed to a solid black mass inside the photo and asked, “Didn't the surgery check that there were no signs of hematoma in the brain wall, only damage to the internal organs?”

“I really couldn't believe this. This hematoma appears to have been in Luna's brain and has formed a large mass. The hematoma had prevented oxygen from reaching the brain, making it more difficult for Luna to recall everythings. You saw that this hematoma had pressed on a nerve in the hippocampus, which interfered with Luna's memories." Allen explained.

“Is there a way to completely remove this mass of blood?”

“I am afraid it cannot be completely removed, this hematoma is too large. Luna's health could not stand the many surgeries. So I decided, when Luna's health gradually stabilized, we will remove the hematoma, to avoid the case of the blood clot bursting causing brain hemorrhage." Allen is worried, but he knows this is the only way to save Luna's life.

"So that means Luna has a ticking time bomb in her head and she could die at any moment." Will couldn't seem to control his emotions, he almost went mad.

“Miller, I understand your feelings but this is the only way to save Luna's life. You couldn't force the surgery and immediately removed the mass of blood from Luna's head. You need to wait patiently. When Luna's health is more stable, we will definitely deal with the hematoma to keep Luna safe."

The big argument silenced the nurses in the room. A doctor has been present in the room for a long time, he listens attentively to the analysis of the two professors, he pretends to be taking care of another patient but his eyes are always on Professor Miller. and Professor Allen.

“For now, just do as you say.” Will spoke up, understanding that there was no other way, “Once Luna's health has stabilized, we'll help her get rid of this bomb. Professor Allen, I'm so sorry, this time it was so rude because I was too impatient and scared to act like this. You know, Luna is my only relative, both my father and mother were…”

“I see, Luna will be fine. Checking shows that her stats are recovering very well. If there are no problems, then six months later, we will have surgery.” Professor Allen said, placing a hand on Will's shoulder to calm his emotions, "Will, I know Luna is important to you. Don't worry, I'll try to save her."

Will smiled, he turned back to Luna's room. Now that Luna was awake, she opened her eyes and looked at Will with a blank look. In front of her eyes was a very strange person, she was both scared and bewildered.

"Who...are...you…? Who... I... am...?"

“You're Luna Miller, I'm Williams Miller. I'm your brother.” Will gently touched Luna's face, smiling, "From now on we'll never be apart again, okay?"

“Dr. Brown…Brown…”

The sound brought Dr. Brown back to reality, he sat on the couch of the smoking room, thinking about something for a long time. It wasn't until he heard a call that he returned to reality. It's Professor Allen.

"Professor Allen, I didn't know you were out here to smoke." Dr. Brown smiled softly.

"It's okay, I've seen you on night duty a lot for almost a month. Most of the night shifts at the hospital are yours, so when will your juniors be able to treat patients?" Professor Allen licked a cigarette and began to smoke, “You know patient 1314? Professor Miller's sister, Luna Miller."

“I know her as the patient who was saved by professor Allen almost a month ago.” Brown replied, "The vital signs are all very good."

“Yes, but there was a hematoma that caused all of Luna's memories to be lost. She has no recollection of the past, which is fine if the blood clot is located in a position that is difficult to remove and requires multiple operations before it ruptures.”

“I wonder if this patient can be transferred to me?” Brown suddenly suggested to Professor Allen's surprised eyes, "I'm going to get my degree in brain science soon. Recently, I am in need of a topic to research for this thesis, I think this is a good opportunity for me to study this case more deeply.”

Professor Allen suddenly realized that Brown's study to the general surgery department was just to get his second major. This doctor's main specialty is neurosurgery.

“I forgot you are one of those special cases I have ever encountered in my life. People study a specialty, then study to become a doctor, a professor. And you studied two majors at the same time. Well, if you want, this patient will be handed over to you, take good care of her. Luna is a good girl.”

Professor Allen, throw your half-smoked cigarette into the ashtray and get up to leave. Dr. Brown looked at Professor Allen's back, and he smiled slightly, a bit of a ghostly smile.

“I know Luna is a good girl!”
