Chapter 1

The mountain path was rough, and I was blind. In just a few steps, I tumbled down the slope.

The sharp rocks left multiple cuts on me. I was in a lot of pain and could smell the blood oozing out of my body.

I stayed put for a while for the pain to ease before I fumbled for my phone to call for emergency services.

My younger brother, Dan Smith, limped to the hospital. When he saw me, he sounded really anxious.

“Ted, where’s Aspen? How did you end up like this?”

His hand was trembling as he held mine.

I grimaced and said mockingly, “We broke up.”

“How’s that possible?”

Dan raised his voice suddenly as he said, “Ever since you lost your vision, she dropped you and picked you up from work every single day.

“She placed bumper pads on all sharp corners at home.

“She loves you so much…”

“Enough, Dan. Let’s leave the country.”

Dan was stunned. Then, he said, “Sure. We’ll do whatever you want.”

My head was throbbing in pain as tears welled up in my eyes. Very quickly, doctors crowded my ward.

I was in a daze when I heard Dan call Aspen Reid. He sounded agitated, and the doctor, Henry Johnson, very quickly kicked him out of the ward.

Dr. Johnson asked me, “Mr. Smith, where did you get your eyes treated before?”

I was puzzled. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“The reason you’re blind is because of a blood clot in your brain. It’s completely treatable, and the blindness will be cured. Why did you drag it out for this long?”

I froze.

Back then, to save Aspen, I suffered a traumatic blow to my head.

When I woke up, Aspen held my hands and sobbed as she said, “Ted, this is all my fault! From now on, I’ll be your eyes.”

I was very touched back then and had never even imagined that Aspen had knowingly chosen to delay my treatment.

I felt my stomach drop, and I went numb all over.

“Dr. Johnson, are my eyes still salvageable?”

“Yes, they are. After surgery, you’ll need to rest for a week, and you’ll be able to regain your vision.”

On the seventh day, Aspen came to the hospital with Liam Anderson.

I had just had my bandages removed.

My vision was a little blurry, but I could see some silhouettes.

I saw that Aspen was holding Liam’s hand.

I could not help but tear up a little.

Aspen frowned and stared at me, annoyed. “Why are you so careless? It’s such an easy trail, yet you still fell!”

I did not say a word.

She sighed in resignation and sat down next to me. She then held my hand. “Are you still mad?

“There was a meteor shower on the top of the mountain. It’s a very rare occurrence. You can’t see, so it doesn’t matter to you if you miss it, but Liam really wanted to see it. You understand, don’t you?”

It turned out they were watching the meteor shower that night.

“Ted, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”

Liam walked toward me. But I could see that he was looking at Aspen the entire time.

I watched him bend down and hold Aspen’s cheeks. Then, he planted a kiss next to her mouth.

Aspen flicked her finger against his forehead playfully.

I felt nauseated and tried to look away, but ended up throwing up on Liam and Aspen instead.

“Ah!!!”

Liam screamed and retreated in shock.

Aspen also immediately stood up and shouted, “Ted, are you doing this on purpose?!”

Aspen kept staring at me, and I was starting to feel uncomfortable. On the fifth day, I approached her. I handed her a wedding invitation and said indifferently, “You’re welcome to attend my wedding in three days.”She looked up at me in disbelief. Her eyes gradually brightened.“I’ve looked into it. You don’t have a girlfriend.”“I do. Joy’s Dan’s doctor. She’s been overseas on an assignment and just returned yesterday.“We started planning our wedding a month ago. I’ve just been waiting for her to come back.” As soon as I finished speaking, Joy Brown walked into the bakery.Compared to Aspen’s commanding presence, Joy seemed much gentler, yet there was a quiet firmness about her.She walked over, linked her arm through mine, and rested her head against my chest. After sizing Aspen up, she frowned and said disdainfully, “Ted, is this the woman who left you blind for five years? Want me to gouge her eyes out for you?”I laughed. “That’s illegal.”“As long as it makes you

Her love was selfish and controlling. She could not stop herself from cheating on me, but she claimed that she was deeply in love with me. It was all a joke to her.“Please don’t say that you hurt me because you love me. You disgust me!” I stared at her in revulsion. She could not stand my gaze. Reaching out, she tried to cover my eyes with her hand. Her voice trembled as though she were about to cry. “Ted, please, I’m begging you. Don’t look at me like that.”She had always been used to the admiration and dependency in my eyes. She could not bear seeing the coldness in them now.I flung her hand away. “Get away from me!”I did not want to waste any more time on her and asked a staff member to throw her out. At night, when I reached home, I saw a lot of supplements before my door. I heard Dan’s raging voice. “Get out! I don’t need your pity. Ted and I are living a much better life now.”“I know I’ve done a lot of things wrong. I’ve learned from my mistakes.“Dan, the fa

I settled into my new city for a month and grew to love the slow-paced life in the place. I found the best orthopedist for Dan, and he underwent reconstructive surgery. The doctor said that although Dan would not be able to run fast, there was no reason he could not walk normally again. After regaining my vision after five years of blindness, I spent a lot of time outside after working hours. I wanted to see the world. But one day, Aspen’s friend sent me a text. [Ted, it’s been so long. That’s enough. Aspen’s looking for you.][She loves you so much. How can you be this cruel?]I sent a reply.[When she lied to me about my eye condition, wasn’t that cruel enough for you?]Perhaps my blunt response had caught her off guard. No more messages came through, so I blocked the number. The next morning, I went to the bakery. I had just finished making a strawberry cake when I heard a familiar voice. “Can I buy this cake?”I paused and looked up to see Aspen standing next to

“What happened after that?”“Ted waved a knife around and made the reporters leave the premises.”Dr. Johnson’s words terrified Aspen. She asked coldly, “He can’t see! How could you let him hold a knife? What if he had hurt himself?”Dr. Johnson looked at her in confusion. “Are you saying Mr. Smith can’t see? That’s impossible! He signed all the forms, and he definitely could read them. I don’t think he was blind.”Aspen’s eyes widened in shock. A shiver ran down her spine.“He… can see?”Dr. Johnson nodded. Aspen left the hospital in a daze. She looked into the incident at the hospital a few days ago. There were videos online, but she had not watched them. When she finally watched the videos, she felt frantic. Then, she looked into my medical records. The Reid family was very powerful, and I had not deliberately kept my medical records private, so it was easy for Aspen to find my medical history.Liam noticed that Aspen had not come to see him for the past few days,

“I’m sorry. The number you dialed could not be reached.”Aspen frowned. She ended the call and sent me a text. [Are you still mad at me? Don’t be so petty! The incident’s over. Just reply.]She realized that the text had not gone through either.Aspen’s expression turned icy. Liam noticed her expression and could not help but ask, “What’s wrong?”“Ted has blocked me.”Liam cocked an eyebrow. “I bet he’s still throwing a tantrum. Ever since he became blind, he’s been acting out.“Just let him cool down for now. He can’t live without you, after all.”Liam leaned against Aspen and playfully pinched her earlobe. She knew Liam was right, but she still felt uneasy. She sent a few more texts.[Ted, this is very immature of you. I’m not going to play along any longer.][I’m giving you two hours to unblock me. Otherwise, let’s just break up.]After that, she tossed her phone aside in annoyance.Immediately after, she grabbed Liam’s hand. “Enough. I’m not in the mood today.”

The surgery lasted for three hours, and they issued two critical condition notices throughout. I signed with a trembling hand. Finally, Dan ended up in the ICU. If he managed to pull through that night, he would be able to survive. I kept praying. The news continued to go viral. Some reporters even appeared at the hospital.“Mr. Smith, did Dan attempt suicide because of guilt?”“Since he dared to attempt suicide, why didn’t he apologize to the victim?”“The victim was seriously hurt. How can he just take his life that easily to escape from the consequences?” I was furious with their accusations. I roared, “Get out of here!” My eyes were bloodshot as I glared at them. “If anything happens to Dan, I’ll make sure all of you who falsely accused him pay for it!“Do you want to risk it?”I took out the knife Dan used to slash his wrist and waved it before the reporters. “You’re crazy!” “Both of you are despicable!”The reporters were terrified. They snapped photos b
