"What's the plan?" I catch the words from somewhere at the edge of my awareness.

When I'm locked onto a hunt, the rest of the world fades. It's just me and the target. Nothing else gets through. I leave the room without looking back. Alex and Carina stay with Sofia. I pass Eli and Lucas in the hallway, their faces confused, but I barely register them. All three lycans fall in behind me as I move through the packhouse. Their footsteps trail mine, but I don't slow down.

At the entrance, I stop just long enough to kick off my shoes. The stone floor is cold under my bare feet. I pick up the spear and begin working with it, getting a feel for how it moves. The weight of it in my palms. The balance. I spin it around my body, testing its reach. My thighs ache from weeks of doing nothing. Same with my back. My neck. I stretch each one out, loosening the stiffness, getting ready for what's coming.

I tilt my head back and let the wind hit my face. Every hair on my body rises. I stand there and let the air tell me where the beast is coming from. When it blows across my skin, I catch it. Decay. Rot. Coming from the North. My mind grabs hold of that scent and doesn't let go.

Everything in me narrows down to the prey.

I can feel it out there. Moving toward us. Fast. Relentless. Whatever the wolves are throwing at it isn't slowing it down.

I don't think. I just run.

My feet carry me past the fields where I used to play as a kid. Past the clinic where I learned so much of what made me who I am. Past the orphanage, the first place in this pack I ever called home. The place that eventually gave me a family.

I'm moving so fast it feels like my feet aren't even touching the ground. The wind stings my eyes but they adjust. Behind me, I can hear the heavy steps of the lycans. They must have shifted to keep up. My leg muscles burn as I push them harder. Faster.

We reach a clearing and something makes me stop.

It's silent. Completely silent. No wolves. No beast. The wind has died.

I drop into a crouch and press my hand against the dirt. I connect with the forest, with the ground itself.

Then I feel it. Commotion. Heading our way.

Far off, I hear wolf howls. The signal to retreat. And they're coming straight toward us.

Noah moves in front of me. His massive body blocks my view, trying to shield me from whatever's coming. He doesn't understand yet. He can't see this thing. I'm the only one who can. Which means I'm the one who has to protect him. Protect all of them.

I don't get a chance to appreciate his midnight black fur before the first wolves break through the trees.

They're running like their lives depend on it. Straight for the packhouse. The last line of defense. They bought everyone time to hide. Time for the lycans to get away. The plan made sense. But all of us, me included, we underestimated this thing. I never thought it would tear through our best warriors this fast. But here it is. Half a mile from the packhouse.

That won't happen again.

More wolves pour past us. In the distance, I watch trees bend and snap under something enormous. Then I see it. The beast. Walking toward the clearing where we stand.

I move around Noah and sprint straight at it.

Now that I can see it clearly, I know I was right the first time. It's exactly what the old stories described. A chimera. Lion's head. Body like a human. Long tail. Hooves. I wish I'd paid better attention in those lessons when I was young. What were its weak points? How do you kill something like this? Where do they even come from?

No time for questions. It's seen me. It raises its giant foot to crush me. I dodge. Easy. Then its arm swings down. I dodge again. Its face twists. Annoyed.

I use its arm, still pressed against the ground, to climb up. My plan is simple. Blind it. Get to its face. Take away its sight and we might stand a chance.

I launch myself at the first eye, spear first. The blade sinks into it like nothing. The beast screams. I smile. First win. But when I try to pull the spear free, the beast thrashes. Violently. It throws me across the clearing. My back slams into a tree. Hard. Pain explodes through me and my vision goes white for a second.

Noah is there immediately. His huge form crouched beside me, ready to help me up.

There's no time. If we want to kill this thing before it kills all of us, I have to move now.

"The spear is stuck in its left eye! It'll show you and the others where to attack! GO!"

Noah races back to the clearing to spread the word. An attack forms. I force myself up and follow. I need that spear back. But first I have to figure out how we actually kill this thing. The others attacking will buy me time to watch it. Learn it. At least that's what I hope.

The beast shakes off its attackers. Its white eyes sweep the clearing. Searching. Looking for something. Looking for me.

It finds me. Our eyes lock. It charges. Full speed. Pure fury in its gaze. Now I'm the one being hunted.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I meant every word

VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   Time of death

VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
